Greetings to all Architecture lovers. In my Previous Post in the community, I wrote about the National Capitol of Cuba, a national symbol of which we Cubans are proud because of the beauty and history of this admirable building. In this article I continue narrating my visit, this time showing parts of the interior, such as the emblematic Salón de los Pasos Perdidos, the Salón Baire and the monumental statue of La República, among other curiosities.
Before I begin to tell you more about the beautiful interior halls, I want to show you the layout of one of the original plans of the Capitol and the tour offered to visitors.
As soon as we climb the staircase and approach the entrance gates, we can see through them to the monumental statue inside. As we enter, we find ourselves in front of the Statue of the Republic, which, at more than 17 metres high from the base of its pedestal to the tip of its spear, is the third largest indoor sculpture in the world. In order to get a full view of the statue and its features, it is necessary to take a few steps away and view it from a distance.
This large sculpture as well as the two sculptures on the staircase are the work of the Italian sculptor Angelo Zanelli. I remember that our guide, when telling us the history of the statue, told us that Zanelli chose two women as models for his work, one for the face and the other, a Creole mestizo for the body, and it seems that he was delighted with this woman, as he also used her as a model for the statue of Virtue outside. Women, why settle for just one statue when you can have two, right?
With the general restoration of the Capitol, the statue of the Republic was also renovated, with the help of several Russian specialists who collaborated in the process. They were responsible for coating it in 24-carat gold. It now looks absolutely stunning and resplendent.
One of the statue's hands is resting on a large shield with the symbol of Cuba's national insignia in its centre. This is a symbol that is repeated over and over again in the Capitol. You can see the national coat of arms on the door fittings, the engravings, the reliefs and even in the smallest detail that adorns the place, intertwined with the initials RC (Republic of Cuba).
In the Capitol, all the materials used in its construction and in its most recent and major restoration are of the highest quality. Here you can find precious woods from Cuba such as cedar and mahogany, bronzes, gold, different types of marble, terrazzo, among others.
The great hall where the statue of the Republic is located is known as the Salón de los Pasos Perdidos (Hall of the Lost Steps). Here we can also find another object that amazes visitors because of its history and what it represents, I am referring to the Capitol Diamond 💎. On the colourful marble floor of this great hall, just below the Capitol Dome, there is a drawing representing a star, the centre of which is a large diamond. This gem marks the kilometre zero, from where the Central Highway that runs through and connects all the regions of the country begins.
The original 25-carat diamond, which before adorning the Capitol Hall was part of the crown of the last Russian Tsar, was "mysteriously stolen" in 1946. The brilliant was well protected, embedded in the marble floor and protected by a thick glass urn. Today it is still not known how or by whom it was stolen, only that the following year it was also found in a "mysterious" condition inside an envelope in the office of the then president of the country.
The current diamond is a replica and the original is said to be kept in the vaults of the Central Bank of Cuba, but that too I cannot say with certainty.
The guided tour of the Capitol is on the ground floor only and is divided into a North and South Wing. Our guide asked us where we wanted to start and most of the group said always to the North, so that's where we started our tour, entering the north end of the Hall of Lost Steps.
This hall is impressive for its large size, and is known for its acoustics, which make the footsteps resonate in a unique way. For me, the most beautiful thing about this hall is the ceiling, which has an elegant design and is full of details. During the restoration work, this was one of the most complex parts to repair, especially because of its large size. In the Capitol, everything is on a large scale and the props are very high, which made the work more difficult, especially on the ceilings.
The result of this restoration that lasted a few years is marvellous, the whole place looks magnificent, especially this great hall where marble is the main protagonist, you can see it on the floor, on the benches and on the beautiful green columns. The elaborate bronze chandeliers and the large windows through which the light enters are also very beautiful.
Passing through this hall, we come to the different rooms through which the guided tour takes place. The first room in the North Wing is the Baire Salon, which was a protocol room. Here, senators could relax and converse with each other during and after the sessions.
The ceiling of the Baire Salon is also a work of art. Most beautiful are the walls, decorated with beautiful pink marble. I remember that this was the first hall we visited, and all of us in the group were struck by its beauty. The girl who was our guide told us, referring to this and the rest we had yet to see, "If you see anything that looks like gold, it is gold". This comment left me quite impressed.
This place is very large, there are many rooms and each one has a unique level of detail, elegance and beauty. In a single publication it is impossible to show all its splendor, for that reason I have decided to make several publications of the tour of this emblematic place.
The Capitol is a unique work of Cuban heritage. A much admired symbol of my country that has been visited by different personalities over the years. A place that makes me feel proud.

En mi Publicación Anterior en la comunidad, escribí sobre el Capitolio Nacional de Cuba, un símbolo nacional del cual nos sentimos orgullosos los cubanos por la belleza y la historia de esta admirable edificación. En este artículo continúo narrando mi visita, esta vez mostrando partes del interior, como el emblemático Salón de los Pasos Perdidos, el Salón Baire y la monumental estatua de La República, entre otras curiosidades.
Desde que subimos la escalinata y nos acercamos a las puertas de entrada, podemos ver a través de ellas la monumental estatua que se encuentra en el interior. Al entrar, nos encontramos frente a la Estatua de la República, que, con sus más de 17 metros de altura desde la base de su pedestal hasta la punta de su lanza, es la tercera escultura bajo techo de mayor tamaño en el mundo. Para poder definirla en su totalidad y ver sus facciones hay que alejarse algunos pasos y verla desde una cierta distancia.
Esta gran escultura igual que las dos que se encuentran en la escalinata son obra del escultor italiano Angelo Zanelli. Recuerdo que nuestra guía, al contarnos la historia de la misma, nos comentó que Zanelli escogió a dos mujeres como modelos de su obra, una para el rostro y otra, una mestiza criolla para el cuerpo, y al parecer, quedó encantado con esta mujer, ya que también la utilizó como modelo para la estatua de la Virtud que se encuentra en el exterior. Mujeres, ¿por qué conformarse solo con una estatua cuando se pueden tener dos, ¿verdad?
Con la restauración general del Capitolio, la estatua de la República también fue renovada y se contó con la ayuda de varios especialistas rusos que colaboraron en el proceso. Estos fueron los encargados de recubrirla en oro de 24 quilates. Ahora luce absolutamente asombrosa y resplandeciente.
Una de las manos de la estatua está apoyada sobre un gran escudo que tiene en su centro el símbolo de la insignia nacional de Cuba. Este es un símbolo que se repite una y otra vez en el Capitolio. Se puede el escudo nacional en los herrajes de las puertas, los grabados, los relieves y hasta en el más mínimo detalle que adorna el lugar, entrelazado con las siglas RC (República de Cuba).
En el Capitolio, todos los materiales utilizados en su construcción y en su más reciente y mayor restauración son de primera calidad. Aquí se encuentran maderas preciosas de Cuba como el cedro y la caoba, bronces, oro, diferentes tipos de mármoles, terrazo, entre otros.
La gran sala donde se encuentra la estatua de La República es conocida como el Salón de los Pasos Perdidos. Aquí también se encuentra otro objeto que asombra a los visitantes por su historia y lo que representa, me refiero al Diamante del Capitolio 💎. En el colorido suelo de mármol de este gran salón, justo bajo la Cúpula del Capitolio, hay un dibujo que representa una estrella, cuyo centro es un diamante de grandes dimensiones. Esta gema es la que marca el kilómetro cero, desde donde comienza la Carretera Central que recorre y conecta todas las regiones del país.
El diamante original de 25 quilates, que antes de adornar el Salón del Capitolio formaba parte de la corona del último zar de Rusia, fue “misteriosamente robado” en el año 1946. El brillante estaba bien protegido, empotrado en el suelo de mármol y resguardado por una urna de cristal de gran grosor. En la actualidad aún no se sabe cómo ni quién lo robó, solo que al año siguiente fue encontrado también en condiciones “misteriosas” dentro de un sobre en la oficina del entonces presidente del país.
El diamante actual es una réplica y se dice que el original se conserva en las bóvedas del Banco Central de Cuba, pero eso tampoco puedo decirlo con certeza.
El recorrido guiado por el Capitolio se realiza solo en la planta baja y está dividido en Ala Norte y Ala Sur. Nuestra guía nos preguntó por dónde queríamos empezar y casi todo el grupo respondió que siempre hacia el Norte, así que hacía allí comenzamos nuestro recorrido, adentrándonos por el extremo norte del Salón de los Pasos Perdidos.
Este salón impresiona por su gran tamaño, y es conocido por la acústica que posee, la cual hace que los pasos resuenen de una manera singular. Para mí, lo más hermoso de este salón es el techo, que tiene un diseño elegante y lleno de detalles. Durante las labores de restauración, esta fue una de las partes más complejas de reparar, sobre todo por su gran extensión. En el Capitolio, todo es a gran escala y los puntales muy altos, lo que hizo más difícil el trabajo, especialmente en los techos.
El resultado de esta restauración que duró algunos años es maravilloso, todo el lugar luce magnífico, sobre todo este gran salón donde el mármol es el gran protagonista, se puede ver en el piso, en sus bancos y en sus bellas columnas de color verde. Son también muy bellas sus elaboradas lámparas de bronce y los amplios ventanales por dónde entra la luz.
Atravesando este salón, se llega a las diferentes salas por las que se realiza la visita guiada. La primera del Ala Norte es el Salón Baire, que era una sala de protocolo. Aquí, los senadores podían relajarse y conversar entre ellos durante y después de las sesiones.
El techo del Salón Baire es también una obra de arte. Lo más bello son sus paredes, decoradas con hermosos mármoles rosados. Recuerdo que este fue el primer salón que visitamos, y todos en el grupo nos quedamos impactados por su belleza. La muchacha que nos servía de guía nos dijo, refiriéndose a este y al resto que nos faltaba por recorrer: “Si ven algo que parezca oro, es oro”. Este comentario me dejó bastante impresionada.
Este lugar es muy amplio, hay muchas salas y cada una tiene un nivel de detalle, elegancia y belleza únicos. En una sola publicación es imposible mostrar todo su esplendor, por esa razón es que he decidido hacer varias publicaciones del recorrido por este emblemático lugar.
El Capitolio es una obra única del patrimonio cubano. Un símbolo de mi país muy admirado que ha sido visitado por diferentes personalidades a lo largo de los años. Un lugar que me hace sentir orgullosa.
