Good friends of Architecture + Design, I wish you all a nice weekend. On this occasion I want to show you El Puente and El Parque Almendares, these two architectural works have a common denominator which is the Almendares River, hence their names. Actually, I wanted to talk to you about the Park because it is a place that brings back very nice memories from childhood to adulthood. But I can't talk about the Park without talking about the Bridge, these works are twinned, one was built inside the other and since it was because of the bridge that the park arose, I'll start with it.

The Almendares Bridge / El Puente Almendares

It is an engineering work of relevant importance in the City of Havana. The idea for this work came from the need to unite the two banks of the Almendares River due to urban growth and the need for a safe pedestrian crossing and transport of supplies. Because, although this river always had a low flow, in its last section where the bridge was built just before it empties into the sea it widens. Before this bridge was built, the inhabitants moved by means of a suspension bridge only one meter wide. Otherwise, you had to travel to the Cerro municipality to get to Marianao and return to Playa. This bridge connects the municipality of Plaza de la Revolución and Playa in a direct line, two of the most important municipalities in the city.

It was inaugurated on January 23, 1911, so it is 112 years old, it is 214 meters long and 13 meters wide. The one on the Almendares Bridge meant a triumph for the engineering of the time, it was made of reinforced concrete, which was due to being located near the sea, so metals were avoided. The works of the bridge over the Almendares River were entrusted to Mister Barclay, a builder from New York, and the contractors were the American-Spanish firm Champion & Pascual. H. The design is based on a series of arches that makes it very striking. It is very striking that the main arch that crosses over the river has 58 meters of light.

The construction of the bridge led to the development of the entire area that borders the river bank and in 1912 the idea of creating a park arose. It was designed by the French urban planner Jean Claude Nicolás Forestier, curator of the parks of Paris, but other parks were developed in Havana and it was not until 1959 that its construction began at the foot of the bridge.

This park is a magical place in Havana, where the vegetation of the place, the river and the bridge are linked, considering that they contain an architectural design that is interesting and of singular beauty. When I was a child my parents took me and we could enjoy the vegetation, there is enough land to walk, boats to walk along the river, benches to sit and rest at the foot of the trees.

The day I went they were doing cleaning and sanitation work because it had been raining in Havana for more than a week, so it was not open to the public, but they let me go in to take the photos. Right under the arches of the bridge it is in the middle of the park, it is the parking area. The bottom of the columns have been attacked by artists and they have made different graffiti.

Now I am going to describe to you what exists on the right side of the bridge. Walking right next to the river you can see that there is a wooden fence, and a wall that borders it and as a jetty for boats, but because of the storm they have been collected, there is always for visitors to walk along the river. This river had crystal clear water many years ago, but due to the fact that the different factories began to pour waste into it, it has become dirty. A few years ago there has been a strong campaign to ban dumping waste, to see if we can recover our river from clear water.

All the trails and paths in the park are made of stones and inside the park there are water channels, it makes it look very nice, all the fences around the park are a small wall that holds pieces of wood.

In the center of the park within the great vegetation there is a cafeteria that has a round structure and to get to it you have to cross a bridge the canals make the cafeteria look like a small island surrounded by water and vegetation, it is a spectacular environment, it is a pity that the canals have not been completely filled due to cleaning work.

To the right of the central cafeteria there is an area that is used to celebrate children's birthdays, it is very beautiful, well everything in that park is, because the vegetation is very exuberant, when I was studying for the final exams in the University we like to study in this park because of the tranquility and freshness that it always has.

At the end of this side of the bridge there are some ranchones where young troubadours always come and they make clubs, there is also a cafeteria next to the ranchones. That is why the park is also included in the socio-cultural projects of the city.

Now we go to the left side of the park. In this part there is a cement golf course, now it was empty and full of leaves, there were workers collecting, when I was young I went many times to play, we went in groups, we had a lot of fun, behind the golf course there is a large field for children to play and run, to picnic, read, in short, whatever you want, always full of vegetation, a very pleasant atmosphere.

At the end of the park on this side there is a restaurant with a bar and rustic wooden chairs. There is also a creamery and a ranch where Creole food is sold.

Hello @lileisabel 👋🏻
What a beautiful park and all the trees that provide much needed shade. The trees are old.
The bridge is great and a good addition for the people to connect areas.
The river and walking path along it is beautiful. And so much areas people can sit.
Beautiful photographs and captures. 😁
Have a wonderful new week!

Thank you @littlebee4, have a wonderful week for you too. If that park is phenomenal, the best thing about it is the connection with nature, fun, everything, it has always been very important in the different stages of my life.
