Havana Malecon / Malecón de la Habana

Greetings to all friends of architecture + design, to begin with I wish you a good and fruitful week. Today I want to talk about an engineering work of great significance for us Cubans "El Malecón Habanero" I really can't imagine Havana without this gigantic balcony facing the sea, all of us from Havana feel very proud of it and we have made it our favorite place to talk, walk, rest, dream, meditate, romance and even have long discussions. Besides, there is no more beautiful sunset, in my face a smile is drawn just by visualizing it in my mind.

To show you this beautiful place I wanted to join photos of me and my son @deamond, I did it because my son is a very good photographer and in his photos he captures the emotions and what the place represents for the people and I am more direct I show you the place, without further ado and as it is such an important place for me and for all Cubans, I did not want to be so simple.

Saludos a todos los amigos de la arquitectura + diseño, para comenzar les deseo una buena y fructífera semana. Hoy les quiero hablar de una obra de ingeniería de gran significado para nosotros los cubanos "El Malecón Habanero" realmente no me imagino a La Habana sin este gigantesco balcón frente al mar, todos los habaneros nos sentimos muy orgullosos de él y lo hemos convertido en nuestro lugar favorito para conversar, caminar, descansar, soñar, meditar, romancear y hasta tener largas discusiones. Además, no hay atardecer más hermoso, en mi rostro se dibuja una sonrisa con solo visualizarlo en mi mente.
Para mostrarles este hermoso lugar quise unir fotos mías y de mi hijo @deamond, lo hice porque mi hijo es muy buen fotógrafo y en sus fotos capta las emociones y lo que representan para las personas el lugar y yo soy más directa les mostro el lugar, sin más y como es un lugar tan importante para mí y para todos los cubanos, no quise ser tan simple.

All this coastline of Havana was full of sharp reefs bordered by dense vegetation, which served as protection against corsairs and pirates in colonial times, but it was a place without any social attraction, with the urban growth it was necessary to make a walkable promenade in tune with the development of those times, in addition to being a fast road where the four most central municipalities were united.

The project was entrusted to Francisco de Albear, a famous Cuban engineer who carried out several important works of aqueducts and sewage systems in the city. For its construction it was necessary to use thousands of tons of filler to pour in that reef and for the construction of the wall were used two rows of concrete sheet piles, a technique used in the construction of docks, since it is a containment structure and driven piles and on this a concrete architrave. Hollow blocks of great thickness and 2 meters high were used, which were then filled. Thousands of tons of construction materials were needed for the entire wall.

Todo este litoral de La Habana estaba lleno de afilados arrecifes bordeados por una densa vegetación, que servían de protección contra corsarios y piratas en la época colonial, pero era un lugar sin ningún atractivo social, con el crecimiento urbano era necesario hacer un paseo marítimo transitable a tono con el desarrollo de aquellos tiempos, además de ser una vía rápida donde se unieran los cuatro municipios más céntricos.
Para la realización de esta obra se encargó el proyecto a Francisco de Albear, famoso ingeniero cubano que realizó varias obras importantes de acueductos y alcantarillados en la ciudad. Para su construcción fue necesario utilizar miles de toneladas de relleno para verter en ese arrecife y para la construcción del muro se utilizaron dos hileras de tablestacas de hormigón, técnica utilizada en la construcción de muelles, ya que se trata de una estructura de contención y pilotes hincados y sobre esta un arquitrabe de hormigón. Se utilizaron bloques huecos de gran grosor y 2 metros de altura, que luego se rellenaron. Se necesitaron miles de toneladas de materiales de construcción para todo el muro.

The boardwalk is 8 kilometers long, from the Castillo de La Punta, at the entrance to the bay, to La Chorrera (a tavern that provides tourist services), where the Almendares River flows into the sea. The construction of this work was not simplified to the construction of a reinforced concrete wall, but included the construction of a wide avenue of six lanes and different parks, fountains and restaurants, gaining 111 thousand m² to the sea. This impressive work was built in sections throughout the different governments of the country from 1901 to 1959.

El malecón tiene una longitud de 8 kilómetros, desde el Castillo de La Punta, en la entrada de la bahía, hasta la La Chorrera (Taberna que da servicio turístico) , donde el río Almendares desemboca en el mar. La construcción de esta obra no se simplificó a la construcción de un muro de hormigón armado, sino que incluyó la construcción de una amplia avenida de seis carriles y diferentes parques, fuentes y restaurantes, ganando 111 mil m² al mar. Esta impresionante obra fue construida por tramos a lo largo de los diferentes gobiernos del país desde 1901 hasta 1959.

The Malecon is a must-visit place not only for Havana residents, everyone who comes to this city, both nationals and internationals, take a walk along this long wall by the sea. In my case, I have several relatives who live in other provinces and when they come to Havana for any reason, the first thing they ask us is to tell them how to get to the Malecon, it is the first place they all want to visit. In the afternoons and evenings of the weekends it becomes a very busy place, families sit on the wall to drink and talk, young people gather with friends and couples, sometimes they make musical gatherings with some guitar and some merchants take advantage and approach the place offering their products.

El Malecón es un lugar de visita obligada no sólo para los habaneros, todo el que viene a esta ciudad, tanto nacionales como internacionales, se da un paseo por este largo muro junto al mar. En mi caso tengo varios familiares que viven en otras provincias y cuando vienen a La Habana por cualquier motivo lo primero que nos piden es que les digamos cómo llegar al Malecón, es el primer lugar que todos quieren visitar. En las tardes y noches de los fines de semana se convierte en un lugar muy concurrido, las familias se sientan en el muro a beber y conversar, los jóvenes se reúnen con amigos y parejas, a veces hacen tertulias musicales con alguna guitarra y algunos comerciantes aprovechan y se acercan al lugar ofreciendo sus productos.

In front of Havana's Malecon is one of the tallest hospitals in Cuba, the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital, facing the Antonio Maceo Park where children play freely.

Frente al malecón habanero se encuentra uno de los hospitales más altos de Cuba, el hospital Hermanos Ameijeiras , frente al parque Antonio Maceo donde los niños juegan libremente.

At the intersection with the central 23rd Street there is a very beautiful fountain that imitates a waterfall, with the imposing Hotel Nacional in the background, in is the place where most young people accumulate on the boardwalk.

En el cruce con la céntrica calle 23 hay una fuente muy bonita que imita una cascada, con el imponente Hotel Nacional al fondo, en es el lugar donde más jóvenes se acumulan en el malecón.

A wide six-lane avenue runs along the entire length of the Malecón, facilitating rapid transit from Old Havana to Miramar, in the municipality of Playa, passing through areas of the municipality of Centro Habana and the central neighborhood of Vedado, with abundant public lighting.

Una amplia avenida de seis carriles recorre toda la extensión del Malecón, facilitando el tránsito rápido desde La Habana Vieja hasta Miramar, en el municipio de Playa, pasando por zonas del municipio de Centro Habana y el céntrico barrio del Vedado, con abundante alumbrado público.

When you walk along the Malecón it seems like a trip back in time, because very close to the Punta where it begins, all the buildings are old, some in bad condition due to the aggressiveness of the sea and are part of the "Malecón Restoration" project, and as you walk through the rest of the municipalities you can see the most modern part of Havana in the Vedado neighborhood, until you reach the solemn and refined Miramar.

Cuando se camina por el Malecón parece un viaje en el tiempo, porque muy cerca de la Punta donde comienza, todos los edificios son antiguos, algunos en mal estado por la agresividad del mar y forman parte del proyecto de "Restauración del Malecón", y a medida que se recorre el resto de los municipios se puede ver la parte más moderna de La Habana en el barrio del Vedado, hasta llegar al solemne y refinado Miramar.
