Hi all 👋🏻

With my next post into the Architecture+Design Community I want to show you this ancient Egyptian temple in the city of Madrid, Spain.
It is located in the La Montaña Park ~ Parque de la Montaña in the city of Madrid.
On Google maps see the yellow star ⭐️:

Close by the Royal Palace as you can see.

I visited this ancient temple on my trip to Madrid 13 March 2022 not that long ago and I just had to go and see it. As I heard / read much about it.
Photographs are taken with my iPhone as my DSLR camera died. But I think they came out well 😇
Let me tell you first a little bit more about this ancient Egyptian temple and why it is in Spain before I show you my walk around it.
More information You can find in this website!
It states; ”The Temple of Debod (Spanish: Templo de Debod) is an ancient Egyptian temple that was dismantled and rebuilt in the center of Madrid, Spain, in Parque de la Montaña, Madrid.
The shrine was originally erected 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) south of Aswan in Nubia. In the early 2nd century BC, Adikhalamani (Tabriqo), the Kushite king of Meroë, started its construction by building a small single-room chapel dedicated to the god Amun.
It was built and decorated in a similar design to the later Meroitic chapel on which the Temple of Dakka is based. Later, during the reigns of Ptolemy VI, Ptolemy VIII, and Ptolemy XII of the Ptolemaic dynasty, it was extended on all four sides to form a small temple, 12 by 15 metres (39 ft × 49 ft), which was dedicated to Isis of Philae. The Roman emperors Augustus and Tiberius completed its decorations.
From the quay, there is a long processional way leading to the stone-built enclosure wall, through three stone pylon gateways, and finally to the temple itself. The pronaos, which had four columns with composite capitals, collapsed in 1868 and is now lost.
Behind it lay the original sanctuary of Amun, the offering table room and a later sanctuary with several side-rooms and stairs to the roof.
In 1960, due to the construction of the Aswan High Dam and the consequent threat posed by its reservoir to numerous monuments and archeological sites, UNESCO made an international call to save this rich historical legacy.
As a sign of gratitude for the help provided by Spain in saving the Abu Simbel temples, the Egyptian state donated the Temple of Debod to Spain in 1968.
-aha 💡now we know why it is in Spain 🤓
The temple was rebuilt in one of Madrid's parks, and opened to the public in 1972. The reassembled gateways have been placed in a different order than when originally erected.
Compared to a photo of the original site, the gateway topped by a serpent-flanked sun was not the closest gateway to the temple proper.
It constitutes one of the few works of ancient Egyptian architecture that can be seen outside Egypt and the only one of its kind in Spain.”
So thats why I just had to visit this unique site on my first trip to Madrid 😎
Let’s go back to the Temple of Debod!
I will show you what I saw as we walk towards it and around it…
We start our walk below the park and we walk by this statue/ monument.

Monumento al Pueblo del Dos de Mayo de 1808.
Google maps tells us:

We walk further and see steps up the mountain.
Half way up the steps I photograph this tree that just started to bloom 🌸🌸🌸 The first signs of spring.
How beautiful this season can be…

At the top of the stairs we reach the La Montaña Park ~ Parque de la Montaña in the city of Madrid and see:

The Egyptian Temple.
As it just had rained during the night and the morning, there was still some water left in the reservoir to give me some stunning reflections. 😎😊
Let’s have a closer look at the temple.

It looks magnificent!
Next to us when we turn around we see the park and people enjoying the spring sun. Especially after some rainy days.

Let’s walk to the front of the temple.

Such an interesting structure… don’t you think?

We walk further and wait till no people walk under the pylon gateways.

It is hard to find a moment without people… but I am patient for you… so let’s wait 😉 toem tie toem… 🕰

Not yet…

Still there… the people I mean. Almost…
But, they slowly go I see… yes 😎 I can take now some photographs without people.

There you go 😉😁

It’s breathtakingly cool. To stand in Madrid and be amongst an Egyptian temple.
I didn’t go inside as the waiting line was just to long to enter, and as I read, outside is what you really want to see anyway.
Let’s walk further…

View from this angle.

A little bit further and looking back. You see the large buildings from Plaza España.

Behind the temple 2 ducks 🦆 are enjoying the sun and water.
Let’s continue our walk… as we walk through the park a little further.

As it is located high up, the views over Madrid city are stunning.

I thought let’s include a few views.

The building on the top left is the Royal Palace.
We walk a bit further and see it better through the trees. 🌴🌳

Some blossoms on the trees and the Royal Palace in the background.

Here… some steps down…

And this last photograph ends your walk and mine will continue towards the Palace. Bye bye 👋🏻 Until next time!
I promise I will show you more from the Palace and Madrid city and all it’s architectural gems another time 😉 So stay tuned…
Hope you enjoyed my photos of this temple in Madrid, Spain from not that long ago as much as I did. Thank you for looking and reading 😊 🙏🏻
Any questions or comments, let me know. Always happy to help.
Have a great day all 😎

It’s pretty cool to see the temple and just be there. To imagine how old it is and where it came from.
I am very amazed by the architecturally packed buildings in your city, all neatly arranged.
They are impressive when looked at from afar.

oh, I was so close to this place and I didn't know about the existence of this temple
so, I missed out to visit it in real life
luckily, you brought some of Madrid here :)))
thanks, @littlebee4 :)
O that’s sad, that you didn’t see the temple. But I remember you didn’t have many days in Madrid. And as I know now, Madrid is very large and has sooooooo much to see. To much for just a weekend/ a few days.
Everybody I talked to so far didn’t know about its existence. It is not well known and just off the beaten track as most visitors don’t go further than the Royal Palace.
I’m glad I could show it to you now, through my eyes and give you more information about it. 🤗😁
Have a good evening @mipiano
Night night for later 😊👋🏻😴
Yeah, we didn't have a lot of time
just those two days, impossible to visit everything and inform me about everything
I like to see ahead what I can visit, and make a route, but many times it is just spontaneous.
Spontaneous is good, but then the possibility to miss out on worthy places is higher.
Anyway, now I know there is an ancient Egyptian temple in MAdrid.
Would never guess it
have a good day @littlebee4 👋
I know…. Short breaks to such a large city. Again you need to prioritise 😉
I tend to pick a few mayor sights and a few of the beaten path sights for our trips before we go. Everything else will be spontaneous, as we go 😉
Would love to go back one day to Madrid as we really liked it and the long train ride wasn’t that bad. We enjoyed it. Who know… 😊 hope you get to go back one day too. 🤞🏻
Thank you so much @mipiano have a great day 👋🏻☀️
Oh I know the feeling, wanting to go back to Madrid, but I am not sure right now when
The train, we haven't tried AVE, but it would be fun
as I don't remember how was my day 7 days ago lol
I will take your wish now :D
And wishing you a great day today @littlebee4
Good morning 😀
Good morning @mipiano 👋🏻☀️
Hope you can visit it again and take the AVE train up to it 😎
You are welcome. Thank you so much.
Have a great day too. 😊

You are welcome!
Hello Jackie @littlebee4, it's absolutely great to see you again here! 😊 Hope you had a fantastic vacation. 👍
I could pretty much remember the Temple of Debod, an impressive work of Egyptian sacred architecture in Madrid, Spain as also previously published by our dear Spanish friend @juancar347. What's simply fascinating about this ancient monument was its relocation from its original site in Egypt to Spain, due to its fragile situation with the Aswan High Dam. I'm truly happy to enjoy this masterpiece as well from your personal perspective. 😊
In your opinion, do you think their decision to transfer this architectural relic to another country like Spain as a gift of gratitude was logical? Or could this have been better if they just transported this iconic temple to a different vicinity within Egypt?
Hello @storiesoferne 😊
Thank you so much for the renewed welcome. We had a great holiday, actually a family visit. As we live abroad and due to the pandemic we hadn’t seen my husbands family in over 2 years. So it was great catching up and celebrating our marriage with them. It was extra special.
It is impressive and it doesn’t surprise me if there were other posts from it.
I did hear from a guard that they wanted to protect it, build a cover for it to protect it from the weather in Spain. But this was delayed because of the pandemic also.
In my opinion… hhhmmm one part of me says they should have left it in Egypt. Relocated it to another area and treasure this relic.
But on the other hand. It does give the people in Europe (those who live in countries around Spain) and visitors to Spain a unique opportunity to visit one of the ancient Egyptian temples easily.
But somehow, not many people are aware of it existence. Let alone know the story behind it.
If I had not known about it before, I definitely would have missed it on my visit. As we did visit the Palace, but wouldn’t have walked further than that.
Right. Your interesting insights about the pros and cons of transferring that historic temple within or outside of Egypt are eye-opening revelations. And to add to that great consolation is, that despite the foreign origin of that sacred monument, it has fortunately been well-maintained, preserved, and protected by our Spanish folks in Madrid where architectural enthusiasts and regular tourists from around the world would still be able to experience its marvelous splendor.
I'm truly glad you had an incredible holiday with your husband and the long-awaited reunion with his family after a couple of years. I share in the immense joy of your celebrations! Congratulations @littlebee4! 😊😎👍
