Each house represents the culture of the province along with its philosophy and people’s way of living.For many Indonesian, in the past they used to memorize the name and the characteristics of the traditional houses but I am not sure that in recent times, they still do that. The traditional Indonesian houses these days are merged into modernity which can be seen as an influence in modern architecture of Indonesian people. However, one island and province in Indonesia that still strongly kept their tradition including their architecture is Bali. Though the island is lined up with resorts and villas, traditional balinese houses still fit into the modernity and add an eclectic touch to the island.
I am no expert on each philosophical aspect or symbolism of Balinese houses but ever since a long time ago, I have had special admiration for the island and its architecture. All I know historically is that some Balinese people were from east java, mostly exiles from Majapahit’s kingdom. This can be seen in the gates and the color of the houses that all look similar.
I happened to stay at a family owned guest house that somehow reflects a typical Balinese house. It’s owned by a long generation of “pande” , a clan who used to work as blacksmiths or forge iron. Inside the house I stayed there are three temples with maze-like buildings and open spaces. The first temple is their ancestor temple, their medium sized family temple, and a smaller temple adjacent to the medium sized temple. Apparently, that resonates with the idea that Balinese house adheres to strict and sacred laws of building, allowing much open space and consisting of a spacious courtyard with many small pavilions, ringed by wall to keep out evil spirits and decorated with guardian statues.
As you can see from the structure above, it has stairs leading up to the house. Followed by wooden pillars with intricate details around it. Additionally, the most magnificent part is always the door that has the shade of gold with a very complex relief of floras. On the wall of what seemed to be a hall where people meet, there is a relief that tries to tell a story. It is like a painting but made from reliefs. This reflected the Balinese artistry that is one-of-a-kind. Everything in this compound is quite magnificent. However, the guest houses are much more modern and simple.
From where I come from, many are often afraid of such houses because it’s dark. But to me, I don’t feel creep out at all going out all night. In fact, I think I am one of a few guests who often comes back very late. I talked to the owner many times but I never had the time to actually ask about why it was built that way. Except on my last day, I only began to appreciate how artistic their house is. It’s ironic but it’s okay, I am going to go back soon and will ask them about their house and why it’s built that way.

This type of houses is exclusively in Bali island. I don't think you could see them anywhere in the world except in that island.
Hey Mac. Whenever certain types of architecture conform with their natural surroundings, count me in! I'm always passionate about studying how homeowners integrate nature within and outside their abodes to enhance their lifestyles. Take Feng Shui for instance, it has become a popular practice that aligns various spaces with the universe.
As for Balinese architecture, there must also be some kind of environmental principle involved in their building practices. I'm not sure about the correct terminology though. Another profound piece of evidence that shows their alliance with nature is their extensive use of local construction materials, hence the term "vernacular architecture".
In your experience, what do you think makes Balinese architecture completely different to the other Indonesian architectural styles?
In terms of construction, they have some strict rules and something like "feng shui" but their own. So, they can't just build things as they like. Not to mention, if their house is next to a temple, it's going to be another story.Unlike engraving in other traditional houses, theirs looks really grand with the choice of color that's often with a shade of gold,in comparison engraving in java which is often just wood color.
Not to mention, everyday, they give offerings nearby their structure to give blessing into the house. This is different in any other parts of Indonesia I've been too which makes it a unique experience. Even at clubs/night clubs they will do this as well.
Okay, I see. It must be a wonderful feeling to enjoy the grand often luxurious Balinese designs with golden accents as compared to the more traditional elements of only wood. These types of extraordinary aesthetics would give the impression of wealth, and power, showing an elite social class for families involved in Balinese architecture.
Wow! It looks like they also treat their built environments like living entities, right? This reminds me of the phenomenon called "Animism", referring to the belief that material objects, places, and mundane creatures all possess spiritual characteristics. 😊
I wonder how much theft and vandalism have altered those places already.
There's no theft/vandalism around the island. Not that one since that's a guest house 😄

Very interesting to know about the traditional houses of Indonesia. The one you show us has a quite striking structure. I don't know much about the philosophy or physical structure of them either, but it looks very nice and cozy.

I did not know about these traditional Balinese houses. They have a lot of details in their structure and are very colorful. It seems to me that they should have their own standards for this type of construction which is particular and very striking. Great pics 📸
