Here is now the maternity hospital where am I, my brother and my sister were born. Every time I pass this majestic structure, I admire its beauty.
I've always wanted to know more about this house, and here is a great community of Architecture+Design, where I can write about this ancient masterpiece and where it will bring pleasure for fans.
This № 8 building is located on Rappoport Street in Lviv. And before there was a Jewish hospital.
A grandiose monumental two-storey building, made in oriental (Moorish) style, with three-storey risalits and an original bath. Architect - Kazimir Moklovsky. The house was built in 1898-1901. Today, as I have already written, it houses the maternity ward of the 3rd city clinical hospital
The ancient Jewish hospital is a landmark building in Lviv. It is a monument of Jewish culture and it is very important for the city that this building is visible in the urban landscape of Lviv. There are only a few such buildings in Lviv.
"It is a historical heritage associated with the Jewish community, and the complex is unique because it is linked by a common idea. The idea of a Jewish hospital, which was founded in 1804. The building we have now is from the beginning of the XX century (in the style of historicism), but it was she who made this complex stand out. There used to be a hospital, a home for the disabled, a home for the elderly - all for the Jewish community. And among other things, the buildings are located in the area that is connected to the cemetery. On all maps from different times there is a very clear spot from it - the outline of the ancient Jewish cemetery. And here, from the beginning of the XIX century, there were buildings associated with charity"- Oksana Boyko, a lecturer at the Department of Restoration of Architectural and Artistic Heritage of the Institute of Architecture of Lviv Polytechnic National University, told.
Experts believe that along with the main building, which is already a monument, three more buildings and the old fence have important historical and architectural and artistic value and should be under the protection of monument protection legislation.
Architecture
Monumental building, located in the north-western part of the city, on a sloping terrain. Masonry of unplastered brick, yellow and red, three-story.
Plan - elongated configuration, symmetrical. The longitudinal axis of the house is oriented parallel to the street. Rappoport.
The compositional basis of the building is a block of central projection, to which the side wings are attached. The dome covered with a polychrome roof, installed on a drum above the central risalit, is clearly readable in the perspective of st. Leontovich. The silhouette of the facades revives the jagged finish protruding above the cornice. Windows - arrow-shaped or rectangular.
Ivan Levynsky's company designed and built this house. One of the most famous architects of Habsburg Lviv, an entrepreneur, one of the largest employers of his time in the city. His firm was involved in countless constructions and reconstructions throughout Lviv and the region. He is a teacher at the Higher Technical School and an active public figure associated with the Ukrainian populist movement.
