Plaza Girardot, un misterio en el centro de la ciudad | Girardot Square, a mystery in the center of the city

in Architecture+Designlast month (edited)

The particularity of the Girardot square in Maracay is that around it there are buildings that should not be in that place, since historically they were positioned in other parts, I am referring to the old anthropology museum currently in a state of abandonment and the cathedral of Maracay, the latter was always built in front of the Bolivar squares, also on another of its sides is the Bolivar avenue and in front of another square; the Bicentenary square.

Architecture and design

I will begin describing the very particular center of the Girardot square, the statue that makes reference to this hero of the Girardot independence, surrounded by a water fountain, that is to say it is a fountain with the floor around it made of stone slabs, then in an oval circle of porcelain pieces they made a retaining wall of the water that springs from the fountain, with four points in the coordinates and made of raw marble. And more in the center they made with the same porcelain pieces the structure of the fountain with its water falls.

And in a central circle is the statue of Girardot with his military uniform, raising a flag with his right hand, for me a sign of victory. Unfortunately, this fountain has been without water for some time, I suppose due to lack of maintenance, but when it was made and in use it looked beautiful and at night, with the lights, it stood out even more.

In addition to the central fountain there is another remarkable structure, which seems to be a plaza within the main square. It has 6 stairs because it is mounted on a higher level and even has lanterns that illuminate it at night.

In a marble obelisk about 6 meters high with a bird on its tip and I do not distinguish what species, it does not look like an eagle, but after an investigation the only thing I could find is that in that obelisk there is a pedestal with a bronze eagle, if it is an eagle and was a monument to honor the Americans who were executed in the city of Puerto Cabello for collaborating with the Generalissimo Francisco de Miranda, in 1806.

At its base there is an inscription with several names, but I could not read what it says. It also seems to be a fountain, but I am not sure, since I never saw it working.

This square has around the central fountain flags of Venezuela, Aragua state and Girardot municipality. About 3 years ago an artist decided to make a work with sand in the square and in front of the cathedral. They were castles that caused a sensation when they were new, despite the erosion of the wind, rain and the passage of time, you can still appreciate some of this work. The Girardot square is a pleasant place to rest.

Historia

History

I wanted to know the date of inauguration and the historical details of this square, but on the internet I found nothing written, that fueled my curiosity to know more about this place and I found a video of a journalist who makes a very interesting review and tells things that left me very surprised so I leave her video and who does not speak the Spanish language can give in the video settings, in the part of the subtitles, activate them and change the option of automatic translation there you can select the language you want.

Personal anecdote

This square has been restored many times, I remember years ago it had two public restrooms, one for men and one for women, it was a free service for passersby and on several occasions they got me out of trouble 🤭, they kept them clean and nice, but overnight they were closed. As it is located right in the center of the state capital, it is always full of people, because of all the commerce, banks and religious centers that surround it.

It has large, leafy trees that give shade to young and old at any time, and it is always full of people.

I remember that years ago something curious happened to me in this square, I was leaving work at noon and I had to wait 4 hours to go to the university so I sat down to study, read, and sometimes play with my Rubik's cube, I had an addiction to that toy and one afternoon a woman sat next to me and asked me if I could lend it to her, I gave it to her and on the first try I put it together, she left me surprised and told me that it had a trick then she left and about 5 minutes later another person sat next to me, this time it was a man who also asked me to borrow it, I was still not out of the astonishment that the woman left me when this guy gave it to me solved again. 😆😅 what are the chances of that happening in a million? None of us knew each other and everyone went their own way, but that moment and the place stayed in my memory forever.

I say goodbye thanking you for your company in reading my post, see you soon in the comments.

You cracked me up with the rubik's cube anecdote, I've never been able to put it together.
As for the square, it looks pretty clean and the trees really are a balm for the city weather, so your strategy of waiting there to get into class was ideal.
Too bad the fountain doesn't work. I remember when that happened with the one in Plaza Venezuela in Caracas, and then when it was activated again, the magic of the place came back intact.

After living that cube experience, I set out to do it too. I've managed to put it together about 6 times, but not at the speed of those people and I never knew how I got to the result 🤣.

That square isn't very pretty, but it sure is pleasant. The fountain was a beauty, hopefully someday they will reactivate it.

While those statues and sculptures add additional meaning to the "square" (some would say that they MADE them squares), those memories of gathering and the one like yours with the Rubick's cube are what makes them squares... It's great to see people hanging around the square, taking a break, waiting to meet someone, etc.

Thanks for sharing the story about this place and your personal connection with it!

Beautiful your city friend, one of the ones I want to know. This square has many elements that I like. It is beautiful, the obelisk is my favorite. I love the tall sculptures.

I put it together one month, hahaha, I removed all the little squares and then put it together piece by piece. The only way I have completed the cube hahahahaha.
