RE: SMART CITY: CONVERT ABANDONED URBAN SPACE TO MULTI-FUNCTIONAL LINKAGE FROM MRT STATION TO RESIDENTIAL AND RECREATIONAL PARK

in Architecture+Design3 years ago

Hello Cherry. Abandoned architecture, especially public structures, would most probably regain new life. It simply depends on the government or the private institutions who are handling them. Singapore, being a super innovative city, undoubtedly never fails to find new solutions for old problems. And that MRT track is one perfect example of how far design creativity can reach.

As a Landscape Architect, what do you think is the most difficult area to renovate in that abandoned landmark?

Hi Erne, how are you recently? Thank you for dropping by and commenting. It's my pleasure 😊
Every piece of land is precious, especially a small country. There is usually no good planning under the mrt track, and it will become a wasteland.
I think the difficulty should be how to re-plan the abandoned place become a attractive place by understanding the needs of local residents, and make a very practical and aesthetically space.
The hardest thing is to complete it within the client budget and minimise the maintenance cost by applying low maintenance design.
This MRT linkage completed last 4 years. Some of the proposed plants die and removed out. Therefore, the landscape become very simple currently.
Any idea or suggestion regarding abandoned place in your city?
Wishing you have a great and safe weekend ❤️ Thank you Erne.

Yes, that's true. It's definitely a huge challenge to redesign abandoned urban spaces. In our particular city, for instance, that's also a major issue due to the lack of financial budget and the problem of flooding brought about by frequent typhoons, Garbade disposal is also another headache as they continuously clog the overflowing sewers and drainage systems.

Have a lovely weekend Cherry! Take care! 😊

Yes. Agreed. I think most challenging now is the projects delaying with having lesser budget but high demands due to Covid-19 pandemic. Not easy to handle.
Wishing you have a great week ahead! Thank you Erne :)
