Wood pallets are definitely versatile materials for furniture projects. Its architectural applications are virtually endless, and only require our creative juices for its successful design. That dining table is impressive!
What are some of your common challenges when working with wood pallets @littlebee4?
Yes they surely are @storiesoferne. They are (most of the times) freely available as most don’t want pallets. The possibilities are just endless if you pick the ones with good wood.
My challenges when working with it; is getting the entire length of the slats off. Some saw off the nailed part. So it’s easy to dismantle. But I like to use that part too, the whole slat, as it gives a different look.
The wood is nailed with really long nails, some corners have about 5 long nails in them going one way and about 2 nails coming up from the other side. It’s a true challenge to get the corner parts loose. The middle parts have not so many nails.
Another challenge… as I had a Classic Mini at that time, I needed help with another car to collect the pallets 😉 they just don’t fit in a Classic Mini.
The pallet wood I used for this dining table top was different. A very old pallet, maybe even antique…. like they don’t make them in this way anymore and don’t use this wood either. It’s almost a hardwood. These slats were only nailed with 2 nails on the bottom side up and not entirely through like with the thinner slats they do nowadays. So the finish looks different, without nail holes. The top itself I can’t lift myself. It is a 2 person job to move it around. It is really heavy. We moved with it now about 6 times. It’s very sturdy 😎
Oh, wonderful! Working with wood pallets is quite a meticulous job that requires careful selection, proper handling, and precision. I'm glad these raw materials didn't damage your Classic Mini, as they would be more suitable to be transported in cargo vehicles.
