Hello everyone. This week is Round 20 of the Reflection Hunters Contest hosted by @annephilbrick. You can read all about it here. Come and join us and experience the excitement and challenge of reflection hunting!
A few days ago my wife came home with two tiny critters. She said they were for our grandson. She felt it was time for him to begin to appreciate these types of pets and develop a sense of responsibility in caring for them.
Friends, meet BERRY
and FRUIT
They are called "Fighting Fish" my wife said. I looked it up and found out that they are Siamese Fighting Fish, more commonly called Bettas. They're fresh water fish native to Southeast Asian countries, the Philippines included. Their names, if you find them unusual, were given by my grandson this time. When asked why he chose those names he said the blue one reminded him of a berry and the red one an apple fruit. So Berry and Fruit they are.
I was watching them earlier today and I began to wonder if there are really any benefits to having an aquarium aside from the aesthetics aspect of it. Lo and behold! My Google search returned 6 Health Benefits of having an aquarium. These are the following:
1. It reduces the level of stress. There’s just something peaceful about it that calms you and those around you.
2. It improves the quality of sleep. Watching an aquarium may help calm body and mind while lying down in bed and induce a peaceful sleep.
3. It lowers blood pressure and heart rate. Studies show watching a fish tank can lower the heart rate from 3 to upto 7%. It is the calming effect that does it.
4. It can decrease pain and anxiety. Researchers observed that having an aquarium in waiting rooms of dentists helped reduce pain and the amount of pain medication in dental patients. (No wonder the dentist in the movie Finding Nemo had a really big aquarium in his clinic.)
5. It can help improve focus and creativity especially in the office where the calming effects of an active aquarium can help employees, especially those having work issues.
6. It can help calm hyperactive children and Alzheimer patients. A study showed fish tanks can improve moods, alertness and appetites of Alzheimer patients while decreasing their aggressiveness. While for kids with behavioral problems, the calming effect of an aquarium can improve their concentration and sleep.
The link to this Health Benefits can be found here. Do read about it.
But there is still another benefit an aquarium has that I just discovered. They can make very good reflections.

Berry and Fruit! How fun. My mom had one/some? for years that she kept in a clear plant vase and the beta lived among the roots of a peace lily. Great photos!
Thanks. That's a good idea about placing a plant in the tank. I read they also have to sort of explore and have other objects of interest inside the tank so they don't get bored.
Thanks for the appreciation. Glad you liked them.
This is such a great idea to teach a kid of responsibility. And how wonderful the names your grandson picked. ☺
I never have a fish tank and honestly I would never thought of these benefits. This is quite interesting how helpful it could be.
Me too, until my wife brought home these two. They do have that very calming effect and I tend to agree with the article about the Health Benefits. I read somewhere that although dogs and cats are the leading pets in America, there are about 13 million owners of pet fishes which makes it the third leading pet in the US. Maybe the health benefits are slowly beginning to be realized.
