Convict Lake entry-reflections-87

This is a few pictures of Convict Lake which is located near Mammoth Mountain, California.

This image has both a reflection and shadows of the enourmous mountains surrounding the lake.

This lake is a lake that my wife and I visit every year to camp and fish at. The lake is a small lake located in a Canyon with Aspen trees surrounding the area. The area has some nice hiking trails, a restaraunt, and cabins. There are boats located in a small marina to rent.

The lake was originally called Diablo Lake but after a bloody battle the name was changed to Convict Lake. The story of this name change started in 1870 when a gang from Virginia City Nevada pulled off the first train robbery in the western United States. The gang was arrested and was held in Reno Nevada's Prison. In 1871 the gang along with other inmates instigated the largest prison break in the United States History. A riot started in the prison and two men were killed during the riots. A group of six prisoners escaped and ran south where they brutally killed a young man, stole horses and guns, then ended up at Diablo Lake. A posse of law enforcement and armed citizens caught the group in the Aspen trees where a long gun battle took place. All but two of the escaped convicts were either caught or killed. Two of the men escaped over the top of these mountains in the pictures and their whereabouts is unknown.

Theses last few pictures show the Aspens that are around the lake and the place where the bloody gun battle occurred. The creek photo is taken with the lake to my back looking down the outlet of the lake.
