Vivía todavía en Italia cuando Roberto Saviano publicó este libro y más tarde cuando se filmó la película, ambos basados en hechos reales, y recuerdo el clamor general que suscitó, porque muchos de los eventos relatados son más que relatos denuncias y sobre muchos de ellos la magistratura nunca había comenzado a indagar.
Roberto Saviano nacido en Nápoles en el año 1979 es un periodista y ensayista que reunió toda una serie de escritos, apuntes, artículos y reportajes publicados en varios medios de Italia para describir la realidad económica, territorial y empresarial de la Camorra y del crimen organizado en general. Con el epicentro en Casal de Príncipe, la verdadera base de la Camorra.
Para los lectores que no estén habituados a los términos y a la organización mafiosa (entendida como delito) es justo hacer una diferencia -más que nada geográfica- de las distintas jurisdicciones de cada una.
La Mafia -en el sentido literal de la palabra y con mayúsculas- es la organización delictiva radicada en la región de Sicilia donde tiene su base operativa aunque sus tentáculos recorren toda la península y el mundo. Es el mayor crimen organizado con fuertes y frecuentes conexiones con los poderes político y económico de Italia. Tiene una rama tradicional que "fundó" la mafia estadounidense llamada Cossa Nostra y otra rama más moderna que conserva su nombre de Mafia d elos cuáles los principales exponentes han sido (y algunos son aún desde la cárcel) Totò Riina, Bernardo Provenzano, Leoluca Bagarella entre otros.
La "Ndrangheta", originaria de la región de Calabria también en el sur de Italia, se considera en la actualidad más rica de la Mafia, es decir con recursos económicos superiores.
La Camorra, originaria de Nápoles, donde tiene su sede principal, es una organización mafiosa de las más poderosas ya que controla gran parte del tráfico de drogas del sur de la península itálica.
Es a esta última organización mafiosa que Roberto Saviano dedica su libro.
El libro -que se autodefine a si mismo como un viaje al mundo empresarial y criminal de la Camorra y a los lugares donde nació y vive como Campania, Nápoles, Casal di Principe, San Cipriano d'Aversa, Casapesenna, Mondragone y Giugliano, son lugares donde el autor creció y de los que muestra al lector una realidad inédita-, consta de dos partes.
La primera de ellas comprende a su vez diversos capítulos algunos con nombres verdaderamente curiosos.
El primero se llama El Puerto y describe el comercio clandestino de todo tipo de calzado ropa y accesorios importados de China a través del puerto de Nápoles, los modos en como desembarcan los containers desde los barcos anclados a cierta distancia del puerto de Nápoles en medio de la noche y con la total obsecuencia de las autoridades portuales, militares y policiales de la zona.
El segundo capítulo se titula Anjelina Jolie, paradosalmente un triste homenaje a la celebrada actriz cinematográfica, donde muestra como se hace la sastrería de primera calidad, los talleres clandestinos en condiciones de miseriia humana y empresarial, como mano de obra clandestina y personas que viven en tugurios con miedo a ser deportados o, peor aún, volver a su país natal -generalmente Africa, donde los espera la miseria, la persecución política y/o la muerte. La falsificación de las primeras marcas a nivel mundial y su distribución a lo largo de todo el territorio italiano.
En el tercer capítulo llamado El Sistema Saviano comienza ya a describir el funcionamiento de la Camorra como estructura criminal perfectamente organizada.
El cuarto capítulo de esta primera parte se llama La Guerra de Secondigliano y en él Saviano nos habla de los jefes, los equilibrios, las reglas del ascenso al poder en el distrito de Secondigliano, la verdadera sede de la Camorra, antes, durante y después del primer feudo de Scampia, los ritos a los cuáles deben iniciarse los jévenes (la mayor parte menores) antes de entrar a hacer parte del clan mafioso, especialmente la ceremonia de iniciación cuando son llevados a un descampado y les disparan desde corta distancia con armas de goma (la marca de los impactos en el cuerpo serán el mejor pasaporte de ingreso a la comunidad delictiva, una especie de tatuaje de honor)
En el último capítulo denominado Mujeres Roberto Saviano nos presenta un panorama claro, teerible y trágico a la vez, de la vida de las mujeres de los afiliados y de los jefes y la transformación y emancipación de sus roles dentro de los clanes.
En la segunda parte de libro Saviano continúa contándonos capítulo por capítulo la verdadera estructura, hasta en sus más mínimos detalles, de la Camorra.
Kalashnikov es el primer capítulo de la segunda parte de libro y nos ofrece un completo detalle de uno de los últimos negocios de la Cammora: el tráfico de armas (sus tráficos iniciales habían sido la venta ilegal de cigarrillos, de alcohol, el contrabando, la prostitución y las drogas en ese orden cronológico).
Hormigón Armado es una de las últimas aristas del imperio económico de las obras en la zona de Casal di Principe, San Cipriano d'Aversa y Casapesenna en la provincia de Caserta. Muchos de los rescates cobrados por personas secuestradas hacia fines de los años ochenta fueron a parar a la industria de la construcción y Saviano lo demuestra con hechos, estadísticas y cifras.
El capítulo dedicado a Don Peppino Diana es un homenaje al sacerdote Giuseppe Diana, asesinado en Casal di Principe porque expresó su oposición y combatió con sus armas de prédica a través de las misas, al sistema de la Camorra.
Hollywood en cambio parece un capítulo donde el autor expresa toda su ironía y amargura comparando y mimetizando las similitudes y el mimetismo existente entre las películas de Hollywood y las de temática criminal italiana por parte de los jefes de la camorra napolitana.
Aberdeen, Mondragone es un capítulo dedicado a la interacción malavitosa entre Italia y Gran Bretaña haciendo referencia a los dos municipios en los que se ha afianzado esta especie de "colaboración del crimmen organizado": Mondragone en la parte meridional de Italia y Aberdeen en Inglaterra, con el nombre de todos los mafiosos que se han trasladado a suelo inglés -perseguidos en Italia- donde viven sin ocultarse, a la luz del sol, sin ningún tipo de problemas y, a veces, hasta sin cambiar el propio nombre.
Cierra este libro desgarrador el último capítulo titulado Tierra de los Fuegos aunque la traducción no ejemplifica claramente de que se trata, en realidad el nombre en italiano es Terra dei fuochi y hace mención al negocio de la eliminación de residuos urbanos y tóxicos en Campania, y el consiguiente desastre medioambiental y sanitario que ello ocasiona. Es frecuente encontrar en las cercanías de Nápoles cuando se excava por cualquier motivo elementos y residuos muchas veces tóxicos enterrados simplemente y por los cuáles la Camorra ha cobrado sumas ingentes de dinero como si para eliminarlos hubiera tenido que utilizar instalaciones especializadas de alto nivel.
En este libro tremendamente detallado, escrupulosamente documentado, con datos y estadísticas que asombran página tras página Roberto Saviano ha reconstruido toda la demoledora lógica económico-financiera a la que no ha podido oponerse ningún poder político y ha causado la muerte de aquellos magistrados que han tratado de obstaculizar su paso como Falcone y Borsellino.
El resultado es un libro extraordinario, de un realismo a veces brutal, de una potencia literaria pocas veces visto, donde no hay lugar para la fantasía y el límite de la credibilidad es la propia realidad.
Respecto a las amenazas de muerte y a la protección policial de la que gozó durante un cierto tiempo luego de la publicación del libro y de la película inspirada en el mismo Saviano ha dicho en el prólogo de su libro Gomorra, en una de sus numerosas reediciones:
"Lo que molesta a las organizaciones criminales es mi lector, no yo. Mi lector es lo que no quieren, el hecho de que estemos hablando de ello ahora, que todos los periódicos hablen de ello, que sigan saliendo libros, que se sigan haciendo documentales, eso es lo que no quieren, es la atención sobre ellos, sobre sus nombres, sobre todo sobre sus negocios".
I was still living in Italy when Roberto Saviano published this book and later when the film was made, both based on real events, and I remember the general outcry that it provoked, because many of the events recounted are more than just allegations and many of them had never been investigated by the judiciary.
Roberto Saviano, born in Naples in 1979, is a journalist and essayist who brought together a whole series of writings, notes, articles and reports published in various Italian media to describe the economic, territorial and business reality of the Camorra and organised crime in general. With the epicentre in Casal de Principe, the real base of the Camorra.
For readers unfamiliar with the terms and the Mafia organisation (understood as crime), it is fair to differentiate - mostly geographically - the different jurisdictions of each.
The Mafia - in the literal sense of the word and in capital letters - is the criminal organisation based in the region of Sicily where it has its operational base, although its tentacles extend throughout the peninsula and the world. It is the largest organised crime group with strong and frequent connections to Italy's political and economic powers. It has a traditional branch that "founded" the American mafia called Cossa Nostra and a more modern branch that retains its name of Mafia of which the main exponents have been (and some are still in prison) Totò Riina, Bernardo Provenzano, Leoluca Bagarella among others.
The 'Ndrangheta, originating from the region of Calabria, also in the south of Italy, is nowadays considered to be richer than the Mafia, i.e. with greater economic resources.
The Camorra, originating from Naples, where it has its headquarters, is one of the most powerful Mafia organisations, as it controls a large part of the drug trade in the south of the Italian peninsula.
It is to the latter organisation that Roberto Saviano dedicates his book.
The book - which defines itself as a journey into the business and criminal world of the Camorra and the places where he was born and lives, such as Campania, Naples, Casal di Principe, San Cipriano d'Aversa, Casapesenna, Mondragone and Giugliano, places where the author grew up and where he shows the reader an unpublished reality - consists of two parts.
The first of these, in turn, comprises several chapters, some of which have truly curious names.
The first is called The Port and describes the clandestine trade in all kinds of footwear, clothing and accessories imported from China through the port of Naples, the ways in which the containers are unloaded from ships anchored at a certain distance from the port of Naples in the middle of the night and with the total complicity of the port, military and police authorities in the area.
The second chapter is entitled Anjelina Jolie, a sad tribute to the celebrated film actress, showing how top quality tailoring is done, the clandestine workshops in conditions of human and business misery, as clandestine labour and people living in slums in fear of being deported or, worse, returning to their native country - usually Africa, where misery, political persecution and/or death awaits them. The counterfeiting of the world's leading brands and their distribution throughout Italy.
In the third chapter called The System Saviano begins to describe the functioning of the Camorra as a perfectly organised criminal structure.
The fourth chapter of this first part is called The Secondigliano War and in it Saviano tells us about the bosses, the balances, the rules of the ascent to power in the district of Secondigliano, the real headquarters of the Camorra, before, during and after the first fief of Scampia, the rites to which the youngsters (mostly minors) must be initiated before joining the Mafia clan, especially the initiation ceremony when they are taken to an open field and shot from close range with rubber bullets (the marks of the impacts on the body will be the best passport to enter the criminal community, a sort of tattoo of honour).
In the last chapter, Women, Roberto Saviano presents us with a clear picture, both theerible and tragic, of the lives of the women of the affiliates and of the bosses and the transformation and emancipation of their roles within the clans.
In the second part of the book Saviano continues to tell us chapter by chapter the true structure, down to the smallest detail, of the Camorra.
Kalashnikov is the first chapter of the second part of the book and gives us a complete detail of one of the Cammora's last businesses: arms trafficking (their initial traffics had been the illegal sale of cigarettes, alcohol, smuggling, prostitution and drugs in that chronological order).
Reinforced concrete is one of the latest edges of the economic empire of the works in the area of Casal di Principe, San Cipriano d'Aversa and Casapesenna in the province of Caserta. Many of the ransoms collected for people kidnapped towards the end of the 1980s went to the construction industry and Saviano demonstrates this with facts, statistics and figures.
The chapter dedicated to Don Peppino Diana is a tribute to the priest Giuseppe Diana, murdered in Casal di Principe because he expressed his opposition and fought against the Camorra system with his preaching through masses.
Hollywood, on the other hand, seems to be a chapter where the author expresses all his irony and bitterness by comparing and mimicking the similarities and mimicry between Hollywood films and Italian crime films by the bosses of the Neapolitan Camorra.
Aberdeen, Mondragone is a chapter dedicated to the evil interaction between Italy and Great Britain, referring to the two municipalities where this sort of "organised crime collaboration" has taken root: Mondragone in the southern part of Italy and Aberdeen in England, with the names of all the mafiosi who have moved to English soil - pursued in Italy - where they live without hiding, in the sunlight, without any problems and, sometimes, without even changing their own names.
The last chapter of this heartbreaking book closes with the title Tierra dei fuochi (Land of Fires), although the translation does not clearly exemplify what it is about, in reality the name in Italian is Terra dei fuochi and refers to the business of urban and toxic waste disposal in Campania, and the consequent environmental and sanitary disaster that this causes. It is common to find in the vicinity of Naples, when digging for any reason, elements and waste, often toxic, simply buried and for which the Camorra has charged huge sums of money, as if it had to use specialised high-level facilities to dispose of them.
In this tremendously detailed book, scrupulously documented, with data and statistics that astonish page after page, Roberto Saviano has reconstructed the entire devastating economic-financial logic that no political power has been able to oppose and that has caused the death of those magistrates who have tried to stand in its way, such as Falcone and Borsellino.
The result is an extraordinary book, of a realism that is at times brutal, of a literary power rarely seen, where there is no room for fantasy and the limit of credibility is reality itself.
Regarding the death threats and the police protection he enjoyed for some time after the publication of the book and the film inspired by it, Saviano said in the foreword to his book Gomorrah, in one of its numerous reprints:
"What bothers criminal organisations is my reader, not me. My reader is what they don't want, the fact that we are talking about it now, that all the newspapers are talking about it, that books keep coming out, that documentaries keep being made, that's what they don't want, it's the attention on them, on their names, above all on their business".
