The Void is a completely immaterial dimension. The beings that dwell within are creatures of pure energy, unable to exist in the material universe. There are only two ways to see them. One way is to quiet your mind and enter the Void in spirit. The other, which is far more difficult, is to create a rift in reality.

This mischievous little creature is a lesser daemon, also called an imp. They are mostly harmless, extremely playful, but completely amoral and derive just as much delight from causing joy as they do causing discomfort and embarrassment.

Notice the stone in the daemon's forehead. Every daemon has some kind of "heart" of concentrated Void energy, to which the daemon's incorporeal form is bound. It is said that the only way to permanently destroy a daemon is to break that stone, otherwise a vanquished daemon will eventually regenerate. This is the origin of the legend of the soul-stone.

In the original version of the Faith in the Crystals, that is to say before the Church of Rhûn co-opted the belief system for political purposes (can you tell I'm not a fan of organised religion?), there was an entire pantheon of gods who were said to have been destroyed, and their shattered remains were the crystals of power, minerals such as quartz, diamond, and neticine. Some mammals believed that the soul-stone also worked in reverse, that they could avoid death by transferring their essence into crystals, such that they could be reborn if their body was destroyed. Such is folly, of course, because souls don't function that way.

The more thoughts coalesce into a thought-form in the Void, the more powerful the daemon that is born of them. These multi-coloured glowing beings are the most common of Void entities, they are part of the inspiration for creatures called "elementals," which I will tell you more about later.

The Void is the realm of souls, the realm of chaos, the realm of magic. All Void entities have magical powers, and these powers are directly proportional to the amount of Void energy in their environment. Even in the Void itself, this energy is not uniformly distributed, but concentrates in certain places, just as matter concentrates itself in the material universe, forming planets, star systems, and galaxies.

Oh, but don't think for even a moment that I'm saying the Void is like the material cosmos, containing daemon worlds or anything like that. Time doesn't even exist in the Void, much less space.

Daemons can absorb and release Void energy at will, which can cause great destruction under the right circumstance. Like the daemons themselves, however, their blasts will dissipate too quickly to cause any harm unless the entire area is shrouded in Void energy from an open rift. Much more powerful daemons, on the other hand, can concentrate their incorporeal forms and interact directly with material objects.

A Void being that has crossed this threshold of power is called a greater daemon. For some reason, most of them have wings, and this in turn has given rise to the image plastered all over tomes of daemonology.

Over time, the image of the greater daemon has slowly been combined with the image of the dragon, turning the latter into a daemonic creature, barely recognisable compared to its original form. To be fair, dragons are so rare nowadays, most mammals wouldn't know one even if they encountered one face-to-face.

Depending on the precise thoughts from which a daemon is formed, its nature could range from beneficent to malevolent, from honourable to capricious. They almost always look utterly terrifying, but it is their behaviour that you must be more concerned with. Some greater daemons are creatures that you would never want to encounter, for example, Gothmog, the Lord of Balrogs, or Skarbrand the Bloodthirster.

Seriously Kaja, I adore your miniatures! The colors, the details, and the lore galore always make my day when I wander upon one of your posts about them. I also think one of my cats might be part imp daemon, there's behavioral parallels there lol!

Ask JT about rift ripping - the Void is basically the same thing as the Warp in WH40K, which is itself inspired by multiple other incarnations of the "spirit realm" in eastern traditions. Also, cats are liquid, one step removed from being shapeshifters, so yeah, definitely lesser daemons.
For me, of course, the real challenge will be replicating this trippy colour scheme with actual paint. Some time after Christmas, I'll print a few and start practising.

A few years ago JT painted and gifted me a halfing pirate captain mini and I still get a bit cross eyed every time I truly inspect the detail work, it's almost how my brain feels when he goes into a 40K lore diatribe. That game is something!
