I recently read a book called "When We Believed in Mermaids" by Barbara O'Neal. It's a story about two, close-knit sisters, Kit and Josie, who have had a difficult childhood. The action begins when they are both grown up; in the background of news reports of a nightclub fire in New Zealand, Kit and her mother recognise Josie, who has been dead for almost fifteen years. In order to find her sister, Kit has to travel to another continent, and in doing so unknowingly causes a number of events that will affect her later life.
This book is definitely not one of the easiest. At first it seems light, but the flashbacks recalled by the sisters deal with very heavy topics such as childhood neglect, addictions, violence and death. There is more of this from chapter to chapter, which can be quite overwhelming. In contrast, there are themes of love, longing for family and childhood, and forgiveness, which makes for a truly unique story.
I really enjoyed the author's writing style. The story is quite long and contains a lot of descriptions, which used to bore me in books, but these are written in such a way that even the longer passages are enjoyable to read. The references to the past lend an air of nostalgia, and the descriptions of New Zealand, surfing, summer, beaches - very much stimulate the imagination. However, there were a couple of threads that didn't sit well with me at all in this story, such as how one of the characters was preoccupied with the murder of the Hollywood star she bought the house after. It was bland to the plot, which mainly focused on the sisters.
Even though the book is sometimes predictable and a bit unrealistic, I still recommend reading it.

Ostatnio przeczytałam książkę pod tytułem "Kiedy wierzyliśmy w syreny" autorstwa Barbary O'Neal. To opowieść o dwóch, zżytych ze sobą siostrach - Kit i Josie, mających za sobą trudne dzieciństwo. Akcja zaczyna się kiedy obie są już dorosłe; w tle wiadomości dotyczących płonącego klubu nocnego w Nowej Zelandii Kit i jej matka rozpoznają nieżyjącą od prawie piętnastu lat Josie. Aby odnaleźć siostrę, Kit musi udać się na inny kontynent, czym nieświadomie powoduje wiele wydarzeń, które będą mieć wpływ na jej późniejsze życie.
Ta książka zdecydowanie do najłatwiejszych nie należy. Z początku wydaje się lekka, ale retrospekcje przywoływane przez siostry podejmują bardzo ciężkie tematy, takie jak zaniedbanie w dzieciństwie, uzależnienia, przemoc, czy śmierć. Z rozdziału na rozdział jest tego więcej, co może być dość przytłaczające. Dla kontrastu pojawiają się tu tematy miłości, tęsknoty za rodziną i dzieciństwem, oraz przebaczenia, co tworzy naprawdę niepowtarzalną opowieść.
Styl pisania autorki bardzo przypadł mi do gustu. Historia jest dosyć długa i zawiera mnóstwo opisów, co kiedyś nudziło mnie w książkach, lecz te napisane są w taki sposób, że z chęcią czyta się nawet dłuższe fragmenty. Nawiązania do przeszłości wprowadzają klimat nostalgii, a opisy Nowej Zelandii, surfing, lato, plaże - bardzo pobudzają wyobraźnię. Pojawiło się jednak kilka wątków, które zupełnie mi w tej historii nie pasowały, na przykład to, jak jedna z bohaterek zaabsorbowana była morderstwem hollywoodzkiej gwiazdy, po której kupiła dom. Nijak miało się to do fabuły, która głównie skupiona była na siostrach.
Mimo tego, że książka jest czasami przewidywalna i trochę nierealistyczna, to i tak polecam ją przeczytać.
