Wrony 🐦‍⬛ Book Review

The last book I read was "Crows" (originally: "Vrány"), which was written by Czech author Petra Dvořáková.

It is the story of twelve-year-old Basia, who lives in a seemingly normal family, but there are unpleasant things happening behind closed doors that the girl keeps inside her.

The book is painful, mainly because it is written from the perspective of a child who is not yet aware. Occasionally you also get to know the mother's perspective, but it is mainly Basia who tells the story. The girl is talented but very underestimated and this translates into her self-esteem. She cannot rely on either her parents or her older sister, who distances herself from Basia during her adolescence. The only person who believes in the girl and sees her potential is her English and art teacher.

This book chewed me up and spit me out, and then did so several more times. While reading, helplessness and overwhelming sadness accumulates in the reader. Although I tried to understand both sides of the domestic conflict, I couldn't help but hate Basia's mother for her way of thinking and raising her children. I wanted her to change her attitude towards both daughters and stop comparing them to each other, or at least realise what trying to create a 'perfect' family leads to. And in this family, no one can get along with each other as they should. This made me feel sorry for Basia - filled with shame, trying to live a normal life, yet ambitious and wanting to pursue her passion. Another depressing thing was definitely the moment when one teacher found out about the girl's problems; at that point I was hoping she would intervene and help her, but the opposite happened. However, I think the most sad thing is that stories like this are often present in families.

I found "Crows" to be a short, depressing book, but it is eye-opening to see how children experience domestic violence and how they are affected by the words and actions of those they surround themselves with from a young age. It speaks volumes about trauma, misunderstanding and injustice. Definitely not for young readers, but I think those in contact with children should read it. It will remain in my memory for a long time.

Ostatnią przeczytaną przeze mnie książką były "Wrony", które napisała czeska autorka Petra Dvořáková.

To historia dwunastoletniej Basi, która żyje w pozornie normalnej rodzinie, jednak za zamkniętymi drzwiami dzieją się przykre rzeczy, które dziewczynka trzyma w sobie.

Książka jest bolesna, głównie dlatego, że jest napisana z perspektywy jeszcze nieświadomego dziecka. Czasami można też poznać perspektywę matki, jednak to głównie Basia opowiada historię. Dziewczynka jest zdolna, lecz bardzo niedoceniana i to przekłada się na jej poczucie własnej wartości. Nie może polegać ani na rodzicach, ani na starszej siostrze, która na etapie dorastania oddala się od Basi. Jedyną osobą, która wierzy w dziewczynkę i dostrzega jej potencjał jest nauczyciel angielskiego i plastyki.

Ta lektura przeżuła mnie i wypluła, a potem zrobiła to jeszcze kilka razy. Podczas czytania kumuluje się w czytelniku bezradność i przeogromny smutek. Chociaż próbowałam zrozumieć obie strony domowego konfliktu, to jednak nie potrafiłam nie nienawidzić matki Basi za jej sposób myślenia i wychowywania swoich dzieci. Chciałam, żeby zmieniła swoje podejście do obu córek i przestała je do siebie porównywać, albo chociaż uświadomiła sobie, do czego prowadzi próbowanie stworzenia "idealnej" rodziny. A w tej rodzinie nikt nie potrafi dogadywać się ze sobą tak, jak powinien. Przez to jest mi żal Basi - przepełnionej wstydem, starającej się normalnie żyć, a jednocześnie ambitnej i chcącej rozwijać swoją pasję. Kolejną dołującą rzeczą był zdecydowanie moment, gdy jedna nauczycielka dowiedziała się o problemach dziewczynki; wtedy miałam nadzieję na to, że zainterweniuje i jej pomoże, a stało się zupełnie na odwrót. Jednak wydaje mi się, że najbardziej przykry jest fakt, że takie historie jak ta są często obecne w rodzinach.

Uważam, że "Wrony" to krótka, przygnębiająca książka, jednak otwiera oczy na to, jak dzieci przeżywają przemoc domową i jak wpływają na nie słowa i czyny osób, którymi otaczają się od najmłodszych lat. Mówi wiele o traumie, niezrozumieniu i niesprawiedliwości. Zdecydowanie nie dla młodych czytelników, ale myślę, że osoby mające kontakt z dziećmi powinny ją przeczytać. Pozostanie w mojej pamięci na długo.
