| Przeciętny hobbit w takiej sytuacji plunąłby na zasady gościnności i przegnał całą kompanię gdzie pieprz rośnie. Ale Bilbo nie był przeciętnym hobbitem. Wśród jego przodków był także ród Tuków, hobbitów znacznie bardziej awanturniczych, dla których przygoda nie była rzeczą tak zupełnie obcą i niepożądaną. I ta krew przeważyła – Bilbo ostatecznie dołączył do kompanii, pomimo ryzyka, z jakim wiązała się wyprawa. | The average Hobbit in such a situation would have spat on the principles of hospitality and chased the whole company away to where the hell they were. | O samej wyprawie, wybaczcie, nie będę pisał. Nie przypadkiem Tolkienowi zajęło to 350 stron, a Peterowi Jacksonowi osiem godzin w trzech filmach. Wspomnę tylko, że na Bilba i krasnoludów czekają gobliny, orki, elfy, ludzie, Gollum z jego pierścieniem i Smaug z jego bogactwami, olbrzymie bitwy i chytre podstępy – i niebezpieczeństwa na każdym prawie kroku. O tym, jak sobie z nimi poradzili – najlepiej przeczytajcie samemu. | As for the expedition itself, forgive me, I will not write about it. It is no coincidence that it took Tolkien 350 pages and Peter Jackson eight hours over three films. I'll just mention that goblins, orcs, elves, humans, Gollum with his ring and Smaug with his riches, huge battles and cunning tricks - and danger at almost every turn - await Bilbo and the Dwarves. | Ja zaś skupię się na tym, co zrobiło na mnie największe wrażenie. A były to nie sceny batalistyczne, nie misternie skonstruowany przez autora świat (choć to też budzi wielki szacunek), ale właśnie postać głównego bohatera i sposób, w jaki został on poprowadzony. Ponieważ głównym przekazem, jaki możemy z tego wyciągnąć – poza czystą rozrywką oczywiście – jest to, że, cytując z kolei polskiego klasyka – „tyle o sobie wiemy, ile nas sprawdzono”. Gdyby na samym początku książki, jeszcze przed wizytą Gandalfa, ktoś opowiedział Bilbowi, co go czeka, z jakimi wyzwaniami będzie musiał się zmierzyć, czemu będzie musiał stawić czoła – i, co więcej, poradzi sobie z tym wszystkim niczym bohater, o którym bardowie układają pieśni – nie tylko nie uwierzyłby, ale i ogłosiłby opowiadającego za szaleńca. Warto także docenić zasadę „jeden za wszystkich, wszyscy za jednego”, tym razem w gronie trochę liczniejszym, niż grupka muszkieterów, a także pokazanie tego, że w sytuacjach kryzysowych, w ich momencie kulminacyjnym, warto pozwolić działać tym, którzy mają faktyczne umiejętności i odpowiedni charakter. No i nie można też zapomnieć o stylu pisarskim autora, wystarczająco wyrafinowanym, by mógł zarówno dostarczyć czytelnikowi dodatkowej przyjemności podczas lektury, jak też porządnego wyzwania tłumaczowi, który zechciałby go wiernie odtworzyć. | Instead, I will concentrate on what impressed me most. And it was not the battle scenes, not the intricately constructed world (although that too deserves great respect), but the character of the main protagonist and the way in which that character was led.The main message, apart from pure entertainment, of course, is that, in the words of a Polish classic, "we know as much about ourselves as we have been tested". If, at the very beginning of the book, even before Gandalf's visit, someone had told Bilbo what was in store for him, what challenges he would face, what he would have to do - and, what's more, that he would deal with it all like a hero about whom the bards write songs - not only would he not have believed it, he would have declared the storyteller mad. The principle of "one for all and all for one" (this time with a little more than a group of musketeers) is also worthy of appreciation, as is the demonstration that in crisis situations, at their climax, those with real skill and character should be allowed to act. And then there is the author's writing style, which is sophisticated enough to give the reader added pleasure while at the same time posing a challenge to the translator who wishes to reproduce it faithfully. |
| Zdecydowanie warto się wybrać w podróż z Bilbem i jego towarzyszami, nawet pomimo tego, że, co tu dużo mówić – autor przyjął strategię dość częstą w tego typu fabule, opisując podróż do celu i jego osiąganie bardzo szczegółowo (335 stron), zaś powrotowi poświęcając jedynie drobny ułamek całości (15 stron). I najlepiej to zrobić przed zabraniem się za „Władcę Pierścieni”, żeby sobie ułatwić chronologię. Polecam i daję 9 punktów na 10, ten jeden odliczając za skromnie opisany powrót. | It's definitely worth going on the journey with Bilbo and his friends, even if the author has adopted a strategy that is quite common in this type of fiction: he describes the journey to the destination and its achievement in great detail (335 pages), while only a tiny fraction of the total (15 pages) is devoted to the return. And it's best to read it before starting The Lord of the Rings, to make the chronology easier. I recommend it and give it 9 points out of 10, with one point deducted for the modest description of the return. |

I did not like the book that much, although my favorite things about it are Gandalf and Bilbo
While I love the firts Hobbit film, I think the movies 2 and 3 should have been much shorter (perhaps even ony one movie out the 2)
