This book was the first novel by its author, the Mexican Laura Esquivel. Of the books that I still have, I have a special affection for this one and although I have lent it several times, I have always been careful to get it back. It is a romantic novel, manners, sprinkled with magical realism. The story is divided into the twelve months of the year and each one is accompanied by a cooking recipe from the protagonist.
This novel was made into a film and directed by Antonio Arau, the author's husband. I had the opportunity to see it and it seemed like an excellent adaptation, it couldn't be otherwise because its creator wrote the script.
In this novel that is set in the IXX century during the years of the Mexican Revolution, the life of Tita, the youngest daughter of a war widow who lived with her sisters on the family farm, is recounted. Two circumstances affect her life: An ancient tradition that forced younger daughters to remain single to care for their mother and a situation related to their upbringing that made Tita the family cook. Against the first Tita he rebels when he meets Pedro and falls in love. This is how you debate between love and tradition. As the owner of the kitchen, she overflows her imagination in the dishes she prepares, making them a magical ritual.

It is a romantic novel but told in an original and charming way. It has history, passion, fantasy and culinary art. My feminist side is recreated with Tita's rebellion against the 'unjust customs of the time'. I like the character because she is a brave and creative woman who manages to make her role as a 'cook' something magical that transforms her into a 'heroine'.
The magical realism that this author gives to the narration, leads us to recreate scenes that in reality would be impossible, such as the scene of the 'infinite quilt of Tita floating on the road behind a cart' or the scene of the 'matches 'in the last meeting of the lovers.
As an additional gift, this story presents 'twelve recipes of traditional Mexican food' more typical of a sorceress than a cook.
It is a moving and entertaining story! where magic is confused with reality and women are the protagonists!
