ENGLISH
This is the third book by this author that I have read, and I really like his way of writing, his way of telling and sharing his story.
This time he tells us about the life of a journalist, or rather a British war correspondent (Thomas Fowler), an American who belonged to the intelligence services (Pyle) and a native of Vietnam (Fuong), for whom both are controversial.
A plot that takes place in Indochina in the 1950s, where the decline of French colonialism and the precedent that gave way to US involvement in the Vietnam War are marked. A plot that includes spies, romance, war crimes, communists, fake news, bombings and a whole host of events that lead to this being one of the crudest works about war that I have ever read.
The protagonist, Thomas Fowler, is a British man of a certain age who feels that his life is in decline and has a relationship with a young Vietnamese woman called Fuong, with whom he has been living for some time, until one day at the Thomas Continental Hotel he introduces her to Pyle, who meets him and falls in love with her, telling Thomas first because he knows his relationship with her, but Pyle considers Thomas his friend and opens up to him about his feelings for the girl.
All this in a tense climate and under constant attack, as the two travel through the well-known cities of Saigon, Hanoi and Fhát Diem(Ninh Binh). At first, the British Thomas is unaware of Pyle's true intentions regarding the war and regards him only as a commercial attaché, until he becomes involved in a plot of espionage and counter-espionage that involves him, even though he considers himself neutral.
I hope you have enjoyed this review and that you will find it an attractive story, written by one of my favourite authors, which ends a series of his books for the time being.

I remember you were also reviewing all quiet on the western front. I have yet to read the book but sort of wanted to before watching the movie. This looks intriguing as the other books you've reviewed too.
Hi Macchiata, what a joy to see a comment from you! Long time no see, did you know I've seen the new movie (All quiet on...) and I didn't like it as much as the 1st. I also heard this book has a recent one in fact, I'll probably see it soon. I hope your stomach is better and that you didn't have to give up coffee for good.
