Today I’ like to talk to you about one of the most beautiful books I have read in 2025.
“Dell'amore e del dolore delle donne” is a collection of stories of women who have faced medical difficulties balanced between life and death, choosing to fight and not to give up to the sad fate of the disease.
In particular, the stories are narrated from the point of view of the writer and doctor Umberto Veronesi, who manages to delve into the feminine intimacy of his patients, colleagues and lovers.

Oggi voglio parlarvi di uno dei libri più belli che ho letto in questo 2025.
“Dell'amore e del dolore delle donne” è una raccolta di storie di donne che hanno affrontato difficoltà mediche in bilico tra la vita e la morte, scegliendo di combattere e di non arrendersi al triste destino della malattia.
In particolare, le storie sono narrate dal punto di vista dello scrittore e medico Umberto Veronesi, che riesce ad addentrarsi nell’intimità femminile delle sue pazienti, colleghe e amanti.

Author
Umberto Veronesi is one of the international points of reference for the fight against cancer. He is a famous Italian doctor, author of over seven hundred scientific publications. He has ten degrees horonis causa and has been awarded prestigious international recognitions.
During my years at university, I had the opportunity to read many of his books and treatises. His commitment to prevention is simply wonderful and in 2003 he created the Umberto Veronesi Foundation which deals with developing scientific culture in Italy and around the world. The author died in 2016.
Plot and personal considerations
As mentioned in the introduction, the author decides to tell the stories of many women he has met throughout his life, with whom he has had to face very important ethical and scientific battles. The time scale is very broad, because it starts from the Second World War, where he talks about his mother's life, up to the post-war period with her patients, wives and sisters, and the present day with daughters and granddaughters.
All the women he has met throughout his life have changed him in some way. For Veronesi, women are a symbol of extreme strength and courage in the face of illnesses, fears, prejudices and wars.
The stories are told from the author's male point of view. I did not expect such sensitivity towards such delicate issues, such as tumors (of the body and spirit) that women have had to face! In fact, I feel like recommending this book more to men than to women, because it can help to understand a little better how the female mentality works, its extreme resilience and courage.
The women Veronesi talks about are not only patients, but also colleagues in the ward. I think this book should be taught in schools, because it tells the story of some female doctors who have made important life choices, sometimes going against the men in their families, in order to achieve professional goals and great scientific progress. The teachings can be an encouragement for ambitious young women.
According to the author, women possess extraordinary organizational skills, often superior to those of men, combined with other virtues such as altruism and resilience. From a medical point of view, these qualities could lead women to cover very important roles at the top, but it is not done because they do not believe in themselves much, they lack self-esteem.
The tone used in this collection of stories is sweet and delicate, but at the same time very strong. The language is simple but never banal and the reading is very smooth.

Nel corso dei miei anni in università, ho avuto modo di leggere numerosi suoi libri e trattati. L’impegno nei confronti della prevenzione è semplicemente meraviglioso e nel 2003 ha creato la Fondazione Umberto Veronesi che si occupa proprio di sviluppare la cultura scientifica in Italia e nel mondo. L’autore è morto nel 2016.
Trama e considerazioni personali
Come accennato nell’introduzione, l’autore decide di raccontare le storie di molte donne che ha conosciuto nel corso della sua vita, con cui ha dovuto affrontare battaglie etiche e scientifiche molto importanti. La scala temporale è molto ampia, perché parte dalla Seconda Guerra Mondiale, dove racconta della vita della madre, fino al dopoguerra con le sue pazienti, mogli e sorelle, e i giorni nostri con figlie e nipoti. Tutte le donne incontrate nel corso della vita, lo hanno in qualche modo cambiato. Per Veronesi, le donne sono simbolo di estrema forza e di coraggio nei confronti di malattie, paure, pregiudizi e guerre.
Le storie sono raccontate dal punto di vista maschile dell’autore. Non mi aspettavo una tale sensibilità nei confronti di temi così delicati, come i tumori (del corpo e dello spirito) che le donne hanno dovuto affrontare! Infatti, mi sento di consigliare questo libro più agli uomini che alle donne, perché può aiutare a capire un po’ meglio come funziona la mentalità femminile, la sua estrema resilienza e il suo coraggio.
Le donne di cui Veronesi parla non sono solo pazienti, ma anche colleghe di corsia. Penso che questo libro andrebbe insegnato nelle scuole, perché racconta la storia di alcune dottoresse che hanno fatto scelte di vita importanti, a volte andando contro gli uomini della propria famiglia, al fine di raggiungere obiettivi professionali e grandi progressi scientifici. Gli insegnamenti possono essere di incoraggiamento per giovani donne ambiziose.
Secondo l’autore, le donne possiedono delle capacità organizzative fuori dal comune, spesso superiori a quelle dei maschi, unite ad altre virtù come l’altruismo e la resilienza. Dal punto di vista medico, queste qualità potrebbero portare le donne a ricoprire ruoli molto importanti ai vertici, ma non viene fatto perché credono poco in loro stesse, hanno mancanza di autostima.
Il tono che viene utilizzato in questa raccolta di storie è dolce e delicato, ma allo stesso tempo molto forte. Il linguaggio è semplice ma mai banale e la lettura è molto scorrevole.

“Those wonderful warrior women removed a breast to better carry the quiver and unsheathe the sword, and for that they were no less desirable. Indeed, they had imposed a new ideal of seduction on men. I too will find a new way to be beautiful, even after cancer”.
“Science has never been liked by the powerful. The scientist is viewed with suspicion: he is a free thinker, he does not reason on the basis of ideologies and moreover he disseminates knowledge and conscience among the people, which are the worst enemies of power. If the scientist is a woman, suspicion turns into fear, and fear into persecution”.
Conclusion
This book is a tribute to the world of femininity, to its tenacity and perseverance. It’s an interesting novel that I would recommend to all curious, introspective people who want to better understand the female thought of the last century.
The special attention paid to medicine makes it particularly suitable for all doctors, nurses and pharmacists who work in this field and who have to face important challenges every day.

Conclusione
Questo libro è un elogio al mondo della femminilità, alla sua tenacia e perseveranza. È un romanzo interessante che consiglierei a tutte le persone curiose, introspettive e che vogliono capire meglio il pensiero femminile dell’ultimo secolo.
L’occhio di riguardo nei confronti della medicina lo rende particolarmente adatto a tutte le dottoresse, infermiere e farmaciste che lavorano in questo ambito e che ogni giorno devono affrontare sfide importanti.

I am amazed that a man, who was also a doctor at the time, managed to capture with such sensitivity the intimate battles of women in the face of illness and prejudice. The idea of teaching it in schools is interesting, although I doubt that a traditional educational system would include texts that question the power structures so much...

Sembra davvero interessante questo libro di Veronesi. Hai fatto un ottima descrizione. Hai spiegato in linea generale cosa si puó trovare nel libro e la sua importanza senza svelare nulla di ció che è scritto realmente. Credo anch’io che le donne abbiano delle caratteristiche che potrebbero essere utilissime per svolgere una professione in campo medico
