Today I want to share with my #hivers friends of this Community a review of a great Danish writer with the rare quality of publishing few books.

Unlike other writers who let themselves be taken by the hand of the literary industry and punctually publish a book (or more a year) Peter Høeg has published in his entire career as a writer only eight books since 1988 (his first novel was The History of Danish Dream) until now, that is 31 years with an average of one book every 3-4 years. The last one is from 2014 Effekten af Susan (not yet translated into English).

As he himself has declared, he must "feel" the plot of the book he publishes, he must be deeply consubstantiated with its content and, especially, he must elaborate and rework it an infinite number of times.

The plot has as its central axis the story of three adolescents with serious emotional disorders: Peter, Katarina and August confined in the Biehl School- with a disease diagnosed as "borderline" or "borderline patients" although the term "borderline" is also often used.

In other words, people who find themselves, according to the psychiatrists' diagnosis, in that thin thread that marks the limit between "normality" and "mental incapacity."

Peter is telling in the first person and after several years his experience in the sanitary structure, subjected together with his colleagues to an almost military regime.

Peter Hoeg is putting together the plot with many jumps in time. It is his style, which makes the book should be read quite calmly. Sometimes told in the first person and sometimes in the third, it gives the impression that it is - in some sections - an autobiography. And yet it is not.

It is a story told in paragraphs, of each protagonist, and then developed in an exhaustive way, recounting abuses, abuses of privacy and other even more terrifying facts of these institutes.

The story unfolds in Denmark in two periods of time: in 1971 when the main protagonist Peter in the psychiatric institute and thirty years later, at the beginning of the European millennium, when he is encouraged to make his story public.

There is no shortage of stage blows and criticism of an overly bureaucratic and authoritarian system is not lacking either.

Like all of Peter Hoeg's books, which achieved its greatest notoriety with Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow made by Billie August with Vanesa Redgrave and Julia Ormond, they are not difficult to read but they are not for read them continuously in a wekkend. To understand us.

You have to read them calmly and analyze the content. The same thing has happened to me with the books of Stephen Hawking and Stephen King among others.

The criticism towards the mental institutions for minors in force in Denmark in the seventies (and perhaps in much of the world) and the group leadership that, by force of facts, must assume some characters within that environment is evident.

In some sections it reminded me of the movie Rebel without a cause.

Recommended for all those who want (and know how) to truly enjoy reading a good book.
