In a way G. K. Chesterton reminds me of Edgar Allan Poe or H. P. Lovecraft himself, perhaps because he only wrote short stories and never novels, and perhaps for that reason he is not mentioned as the author of the best detective novels.
"The Innocence of Father Brown" is the most beautiful original collection of detective stories ever published. There are stories that are a classic of detective literature, such as "The Blue Cross"
