The Fifth Woman is Henning Mankell's sixth book in the series devoted to Inspector Kurt Wallander, an anti-hero by definition and a deeply human person, with a rebellious teenage daughter, a divorce on his back, diabetes that he must control and a suspicion of Alzheimer's that torments him more and more, especially when he remembers the illness that for a long time struck his father and then led to his death.
In the new book Mankell continues to deal with the problems of a society that is less and less tolerant of foreigners, although it generally hides them very well, and a generation gap between young and old that widens more and more as time goes by.
The plot begins as in so many of his books in an African country, Algeria, and the barbaric murder of four Swedish nuns. The fifth murdered woman is not a nun but a tourist of the same nationality and the local police try to cover up the case in every possible way.
After more than a year a series of violent murders shakes the south of Sweden.
First, an elderly nature lover and birdwatcher is killed in a very cruel way when he falls into a well with bamboo poles stuck in it. His body, pierced by the reeds, was eaten by crows and what was left of him was discovered by the police a few days later.
A few days later another man who loves nature and jungle flowers is strangled and found tied to a post in the middle of the forest.
The third corpse is that of a university professor found in a canoe in the waters of a lake.
Gradually, Wallander begins to see a common thread between the three murders, which, however, have no connection with the crimes committed a year and a half ago in Algeria.
It is difficult to establish a common thread between the murders in Algeria a year and a half ago and the current murders in Sweden. However, Kurt Wallander, with the tenacity and perseverance he is known for, does so and gradually unravels the threads of a complex, international and diabolical plot with Sweden and Africa as its epicentres.
In one part of the book Wallander shows all his dismay and discouragement by expressing in his thoughts and in his story: "He realised that he was very tired. But it was something deeper than tiredness itself. He tried to understand the feeling he felt and to give it a name. Discouragement? The happiness had been short-lived. The trip to Italy. Her decision to look for a home, maybe even get a dog. And then Baiba arriving in Sweden. But then an old man is killed in a ditch, pierced by bamboo canes, and the world starts to slip under your feet again. He wondered how much longer he would have the strength to go on. (...)"
As the case progresses, Wallander discovers that not only will he be confronted by a murderer of fearsome intelligence who has no problem committing barbaric murders, but that these seem to be justified by a bloodthirsty and brutal desire for revenge.
The Fifth Woman is more than a detective novel. Mankell delves into the meanderings of a society that has lost much of its former innocence and is daily confronted with the harsh reality of crimes committed with increasing brutality and (seemingly) senselessness.
La Quinta Mujer es el sexto libro de Henning Mankell dedicado a la serie del comisario Kurt Wallander, antihéroe por definición y persona profundamente humana, con una hija adolescente rebelde, un divorcio a cuestas, una diabetes que debe controlar y una sospecha de Alzheimer que cada vez lo atormenta más especialmente cuando recuerda la enfermedad que por largo tiempo golpeó a su padre y luego lo llevó a la muerte.
En el nuevo libro Mankell continúa a tratar la problemática de una sociedad que cada vez soporta menos al extranjero aunque generalmente lo esconde muy bien y una brecha generacional entre jóvenes y adultos que se ensancha más y más con el correr del tiempo.
La trama inicia como en tantos de su libros en un país africano, Argelia, y el bárbaro asesinato de cuatro monjas suecas. La quinta mujer asesinada no es una monja sino una turista de la misma nacionalidad y la policía local trata de encubrir el caso en todos los modos posibles.
Después de más de un año una serie de violentos asesinatos sacude el sur de Suecia.
En primer lugar un anciano amante d ela naturaleza y el birdwatching (observación de las aves en su hábitat natural) es asesinado de una manera muy cruel al caer en un pozo que tenía clavadas cañas de bambú. Su cuerpo atravesado por la cañas es devorado por los cuervos y lo que queda de él es descubierto por la policía días más tarde.
Días más tarde otro hombre amante de la naturaleza y de las flores selváticas es estrangulado y encontrado atado a un poste en medio del bosque.
El tercer cadáver es el de un profesor universitario encontrado en un cano en las aguas de un lago.
De a poco Wallander comienza a entrever un hilo conductor entre los tres asesinatos que, sin embargo, al momento no tienen ninguna relación con los crímenes cometidos hace un año y medio atrás en Argelia.
Resulta difícil establecer un hilo conductor entre los asesinatos tiempo atrás en Argelia y conectarlos con los actuales asesinatos en Suecia. Sin embargo Kurt Wallander con el tesón y la perseverancia que le conocemos lo hace y de a poco va desenrollando los hilos de una trama compleja, internacional y diabólica que tiene como epicentros Suecia y Africa.
En una parte del libro Wallander muestra toda su desazón y desánimo al expresar en sus pensamientos y en su relato: "Se dio cuenta de que estaba muy cansado. Pero era algo más profundo que el propio cansancio. Intentó comprender la sensación que sentía y darle un nombre. ¿Desaliento? La felicidad había durado muy poco. El viaje a Italia. Su decisión de buscar un hogar, tal vez incluso tener un perro. Y luego Baiba llegando a Suecia. Pero entonces un anciano es asesinado en una zanja, atravesado por cañas de bambú, y el mundo empieza a resbalar de nuevo bajo tus pies. Se preguntó cuánto tiempo más tendría fuerzas para seguir adelante. (...)"
A medida que avanza el caso, Wallander descubre que no sólo deberá enfrentarse a un asesino de una temible inteligencia que no tiene prtoblemas en cometer bárbaros asesinatos, sino que éstos parecen tener como justificación un deseo de venganza sanguinaria y brutal.
La Quinta Mujer es más que una novela policial. Mankell se interna en los meandros que una sociedad que ha perdido gran parte de su antigua inocencia y que diariamente se enfrenta con la dura realidad de crímenes que se cometen con mayor brutalidad y sin (aprente) sentido.
