Wilbur Smith abandons historical facts and makes use of an unbridled fantasy in which reincarnation, witchcraft and miraculous rejuvenation are commonplace.
The magician Taita and his faithful friend and companion Meren Cambise, a valiant warrior and personal friend of the pharaoh, after an endless tour of the most remote places in the world, decide to return to Egypt when they feel that their native country needs them.
Taita is a wise eunuch (she was castrated as a young man for laying eyes on the daughter of the lord he worked for) who has superior talents as he is a scribe, artist, physician, music composer, architect, accountant, confidant, engineer and many other skills.
Egypt is afflicted by countless plagues and the pharaoh summons him to intercede with the gods and restore the harmony proclaimed by the goddess Maat, the source of righteousness and justice for all Egypt and the rule of all the pharaohs.
Prolonged droughts (the flooding of the Nile is crucial because the silt left by the river when it recedes is very fertile and is used by the champions to cultivate their fields), the plague that has even caused the death of the two daughters of the pharaoh Nefer Seti, the Nile's riverbeds that have taken on a blood-red colour.
Meanwhile, the enemies of the pharaoh are always on the prowl, including the cult of a mysterious goddess with supernatural powers.
From that moment on, he sets out on a journey along the course of the Nile that should take him to its source in distant Asia, where he can use all his powers to defeat this threat.
In the meantime, dark forces lie in wait for the magician and the obstacles that threaten his journey become lethal weapons in the hands of the enemy.
Crossing territories populated by nomadic tribes, warriors and cannibals, Taita will meet again with Fenn, who is nothing more than the earthly reincarnation of the princess Lostris, his beloved from his youth and who cost him his castration.
Taita, Fenn, Meren, Nakonto and Imbali are an expedition of friends and warriors with a common goal: to find the cause of the lack of water in the Nile.
The evil force embodied in the goddess Eos tries to subdue Taitaa through her supernatural powers by absorbing his energy, but the magician manages to resist.
Finally he manages to reach the last waterfall where the river has been blocked by huge boulders.
Taita and his waters manage to unblock it using their magical powers and the water flows freely again.

Abandonando datos históricos Wilbur Smith hace uso de una fantasía desenfrenada en la cual la reencarnación, la brujería o el rejuvenecimiento milagroso son moneda corrente.
El mago Taita y su fiel amigo y acompañante Meren Cambise, guerrero valeroso y amigo personal del faraón tras un interminable recorrido por los lugares más remotos del mundo deciden de regresar a Egipto cuando sienten que su país natal necesita de ellos.
Taita es un sabio eunuco (fue castrada de joven por posar los ojos sobre la hija del señor para el que trabajaba) que tiene talentos superiores ya que es escriba, artista, médico, compositor de música, arquitecto, contable, confidente, ingeniero y muchos conocimientos más.
Egipto se ve aflijido por un sinnúmero de plagas y el faraón lo manda llamar para que interceda ante los dioses y restablezac la armonía que proclama la diosa Maat, fuente de rectitud y justicia para todo Egipto y norma de gobierno de todos los faraones.
Prolungadas sequías (las inundaciones del Nilo son fundamentales porque el limo que deja el río al retirarse es muy fértil y es usado por los campeinos para cultivar sus campos), la peste que incluso ha provocado la muerte de las dos hijas del faraón Nefer Seti, los cauces del Nilo que han tomado un color ojo sangre.
Mientras tanto los enemigos del faraón están siempre al acecho, entre los cuales el culto a una diosa misteriosa con poderes sobrenaturales.
Inicia a partir de ese momento un viaje a través del cauce del Nilo que lo debe llevar al origen del mismo en la lejana Asia donde podrá hacer uso de todos los poderes y derrotar a esta amenaza.
Mientras tanto las fuerzas oscuras acechan al mago y los escollos que amenazan su recorrido se transforman en armas letales en poder del enemigo.
Atravesando territorios poblados por tribus námades, guerreras y caníbales Taita se reencontrará con Fenn que no es sino la reencarnación terrestre de la princesa Lostris su amada de la juventud y que le costara la castración.
Taita, Fenn, Meren, Nakonto e Imbali toda una expedición de amigos y guerreros con un objetivo común: encontrar la causa de la falta de agua en el Nilo.
La fuerza malvada encarnada en la diosa Eos trata de someter a Taitaa través de sus poderes sobrenaturales absorbiendo su energía, pero el mago logra resistir.
Finalmente logra llegar a la última catarata donde el rio ha sido bloqueado por unas enormes rocas.
Taita y sus aguas logran destrabarlo haciendo uso de sus poderes mágicos y el agua vuelve a correr libremente por su cauce original.
