Hello everyone, I hope you're all doing great. This time, I want to share a new review with you. I'm going to talk about a very interesting book... it's All the Little Raindrops by Mia Sheridan. Look, it's kind of crazy because before I even picked it up, I came across a couple of descriptions online that had nothing to do with each other. One sold it as a super emotional, almost tender, story of love, of healing wounds, of redemption, with characters called Lily and Aiden... but the version I read –and the one that seems fair, the one everyone talks about when they talk about this book– is a psychological thriller that blows your mind because of how intense it is! It focuses on two teenagers, Noel and Evan, and the horrible experience they go through.
So if you've been reading synopses that contradict each other, you already know why... I'm going to tell you about Noel and Evan's story, because it was the one that grabbed me and wouldn't let go. Seriously, people, this book starts off in a... ugh!, super shocking, brutal way. We meet Noel and Evan on their spring break, senior year of high school, and what happens? Boom! They're kidnapped almost immediately... it's not just a kidnapping, eh, they put them in cages, they do horrible things to them, torture you can't even imagine... it's raw, it hits you in the gut from the start. My whole stomach turned in the first few chapters. It's one of those starts that slaps you in the face and warns you: "Look, this is not going to be a walk in the park, eh..." but at the same time, you're dying to know what's going to happen to them!
And to add fuel to the fire, what makes it all the more difficult from the start is that Noel and Evan have had a somewhat murky and complicated connection that dates back to before the kidnapping. It turns out Evan's dad was involved in the death of Noel's mom a few years ago... so imagine: these two teenagers, caught up in this horrific situation that could cost them their lives, and on top of that, carrying that past together that's a real headache and super tangled. This, all at once, creates a ton of internal conflict, which goes hand in hand with the very real danger they're experiencing... and that foundation is what allows the story to delve deeply into themes like resilience, the thousand and one ways people cope (or don't) with a trauma you can't even imagine, and that long, difficult, and often complicated path to finding some semblance of justice.
Hola a todos, espero que estén super bien, en esta ocasión, les quiero compartir una nueva reseña, les voy a hablar de un libro muy interesante.. se trata de: All the Little Raindrops de Mia Sheridan y miren, es medio loco porque antes de agarrarlo, me crucé con un par de descripciones online que nada que ver una con la otra, una lo vendía como una historia súper emotiva, casi tiernita, de amor, de sanar heridas, de redención, con unos personajes llamados Lily y Aiden.. pero la versión en la que yo me metí –y la que parece justa, la que todo el mundo comenta cuando habla de este libro– es un thriller psicológico ¡que te vuela la cabeza de lo intenso que es! Este se centra en dos adolescentes, Noel y Evan, y la experiencia horrible que viven.
Así que si anduvieron viendo sinopsis que se contradicen, ya saben por qué es.. yo les voy a contar de la historia de Noel y Evan, porque fue la que me agarró y no me soltó, en serio, gente, este libro arranca de una forma... ¡uff!, súper impactante, brutal, conocemos a Noel y Evan en sus vacaciones de primavera, último año de secundaria, ¿y qué pasa? ¡Pum! Los secuestran casi al toque.. no es un secuestro así nomás, eh, los meten en jaulas, les hacen cosas horribles, torturas que ni se imaginan... es crudo, te pega en las tripas desde el vamos. A mí se me revolvió todo el estómago ya en los primeros capítulos, es de esos arranques que te dan una cachetada y te avisan: "Mirá que esto no va a ser un paseíto por el parque, eh".. pero al mismo tiempo, ¡te mueres de ganas por saber qué les va a pasar!
Y para ponerle más leña al fuego, lo que lo hace todo más heavy desde el principio, es que Noel y Evan tienen una conexión medio turbia y complicada desde antes del secuestro. Resulta que el papá de Evan tuvo que ver con la muerte de la mamá de Noel hace unos años.. así que imagínense: estos dos adolescentes, metidos en esta situación espantosa que les puede costar la vida, y encima cargando con ese pasado juntos que es un dolor de cabeza y súper enredado. Esto, de una, ya te planta un montón de conflicto interno, que va de la mano con el peligro real que están viviendo.. y esa base es la que deja que la historia se meta de lleno en temas como la resiliencia, las mil y un formas en que la gente le hace frente (o no) a un trauma que ni te puedes imaginar, y ese camino larguísimo, difícil y muchas veces complicado para encontrar algo parecido a la justicia.
Look, the way the story is told, the structure, let's say, is quite good, eh, and I think it works well... the first part of the book throws you right into all the horror they're going through locked up, and Sheridan doesn't hold anything back, eh!, he goes straight to the point... then, boom!, time jump: seven years forward, just like that, we find them again as adults, Noel and Evan. And obviously, right?, they're still dealing with all the after-effects in their heads of what they went through, but now they're fully committed to tying up loose ends and making the guys who kidnapped them pay. Evan, in fact, became a private investigator, imagine! All motivated by what happened to him.
Sheridan's writing style... wow, it's powerful... she's not afraid of the dark, but she handles it in a way that you feel it serves the story, the characters. It's not like she just throws it in there for the hell of it, you know? That mix of the trauma they experienced and how they're now searching for answers is generally well-crafted, although I'll be honest: the first part is so, so heavy that the parts where they dig deeper into the investigation feel like they slow down a bit. And speaking of intensity, I have to give a super important warning here, people. What they describe about Noel and Evan living locked up together is very graphic, it stirs your whole body, and it can be very strong or hit some people hard. Watch out for that!
There are parts that really make your hair stand on end because it deals with physical and psychological torture, so if you're sensitive to these topics, you need to be prepared for it, or maybe, look, think twice before taking it... and the characters, Noel and Evan, are super complex, people. You see them at their worst, when they're most vulnerable, ruined by the kidnappers, and then you see how they try, little by little, to rebuild their lives, to be themselves again in the years that follow. That connection they have, which was formed in the midst of that nightmare, is the heart of the story, without a doubt... it's complicated, it's raw, it hurts, and it feels very real, very much like that kind of bond that forms after a trauma like that, you know? And that whole journey they take to heal—or well, at least to learn to live with the scars they're left with—is key to the story and it really hooks you in.
Miren, la forma en que está contada la historia, la estructura, digamos, está bastante buena, eh, y creo que le funciona bien.. la primera parte del libro te mete de lleno, ¡así de una!, en todo el horror que viven encerrados, y Sheridan no se guarda nada, ¡eh!, va directo al hueso.. después, ¡pum!, salto en el tiempo: siete años para adelante, así de golpe, nos los volvemos a encontrar ya de grandes, a Noel y Evan. Y obvio, ¿no?, siguen lidiando con todas las secuelas en la cabeza de lo que pasaron, pero ahora están a full tratando de atar cabos y hacer que los tipos que los secuestraron la paguen, Evan, de hecho, se hizo investigador privado, ¡imagínense!, todo motivado por lo que le pasó.
La forma de escribir de Sheridan... ¡uff!, es potente.. no le teme a lo oscuro, pero lo maneja de una forma que sentís que le sirve a la historia, a los personajes, no es que lo pone ahí porque sí, ¿entienden? Esa mezcla entre el trauma que vivieron y cómo ahora buscan respuestas, en general está bien llevada, aunque les soy sincero: la primera parte es tan, pero tan heavy, que después las partes donde se ponen más a investigar se sienten como que bajan un poquito el ritmo. Y hablando de intensidad, acá tengo que hacer una advertencia súper importante, gente, lo que les describen que Noel y Evan viven encerrados es muy gráfico, te revuelve todo, y puede ser muy fuerte o pegarles mal a algunos. ¡Ojo con eso!
Hay partes que te ponen los pelos de punta, posta, porque habla de tortura física y psicológica, así que si son sensibles con estos temas, tienen que estar mentalizados o quizás, miren, piénsenlo dos veces antes de agarrarlo.. y los personajes, Noel y Evan, son súper complejos, gente. Los ves en el peor momento, cuando están más vulnerables, hechos un desastre por los secuestradores, y después ves cómo intentan de a poquito reconstruir sus vidas, volver a ser ellos mismos en los años que siguen, esa conexión que tienen, que se armó en medio de esa pesadilla, es el corazón de la historia, sin dudas.. es complicada, es cruda, duele, y se siente muy real, muy de ese tipo de lazo que se forma después de un trauma, así, ¿saben? Y todo ese camino que hacen para sanar –o bueno, al menos para aprender a vivir con esas cicatrices que les quedaron– es clave en la historia y te recontra engancha.
Look, there were a couple of things in the plot that got me thinking. I saw other readers were debating this as well. For example, there's a scene where Noel and Evan are kind of cool, physically intimate, almost right after they manage to escape from the guys who had them kidnapped! And part of me was kind of puzzled at first, you know? I was like, "After everything they've just been through, would that be the first thing that would cross their minds?" But then, if you think about the trauma they went through, that desperate need to connect with another human being, or maybe a way of feeling like they're regaining a little bit of control in a situation where they had nothing... I can kind of understand that, as a kind of convoluted coping mechanism. It's definitely a moment that leaves you recalculating.
Later on, there's a whole thing about a secret pregnancy that stems from those encounters... for me, personally, that added another layer of heavy weight to their already super intense connection. I felt like it was adding fuel to the fire, you know? They were already so close because of that huge trauma they shared; did they need ANOTHER life-changing thing to connect them? It's not like it ruined the book for me or anything, but it's definitely a point worth talking about... now, one of the things I liked most, especially as the story progresses and we see them as adults, is all the mystery surrounding a somewhat enigmatic character they call "The Collector." This dark guy supposedly has the key to finding those who kidnapped them and understanding the "why" of the whole nightmare they lived through. This adds a lot of suspense and intrigue, while Noel and Evan –with Evan now as the investigator– try to find this guy and put together the pieces of his past... that part of the investigation was well done and had me turning the pages like crazy.
Despite the incredibly dark and gritty content and the few plot points that made me hesitate a bit, I have to say that I found All the Little Raindrops to be a truly gripping read that will ultimately stay with you. It’s definitely not for everyone, and it’s a story that’s sure to be rattled around in your head for a while after you’ve finished it… but if you’re a fan of dark psychological thrillers, if you like stories that delve deep into how people cope with the worst things, and if you’re drawn to plots with complex characters bound by trauma, then this one might be right up your alley. Many reviewers recommend it despite the heavy content, and I can see why; it’s well written and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I, for one, would give it a solid 4/5.
It lost that star mostly because of the pregnancy subplot, which, as I said, seemed like a somewhat unnecessary complication in an already heavy and complex story. Also, the pacing, while generally good, felt a little uneven at times after that very, very intense start. But overall, the writing is powerful, the characters are really well developed and really get to you, and the underlying mystery is good enough to keep you hooked. So, yes, All the Little Raindrops by Mia Sheridan is intense, it's dark, it often makes your stomach turn, but it's also a powerful story about survival, about how trauma marks you forever, and about that relentless fight to find justice. If you like strong themes and graphic aspects in some parts, I'd say it's worth checking out... just go in knowing what you're going to find. Let's read! Or well, maybe, in this particular case, let's read and hold on tight!
Miren, hubo un par de cositas en la trama que me dejaron pensando, vi que otros lectores también anduvieron debatiendo sobre eso, por ejemplo, hay una escena donde Noel y Evan tienen onda, así, intimidad física, ¡casi al toque de que logran escapar de los tipos que los tenían secuestrados! Y una parte mía como que me hizo ruido al principio, ¿saben? Pensé: "después de todo lo que acaban de pasar, ¿eso sería lo primero que se les cruzaría por la cabeza?". Pero después, si te pones a pensar en el trauma que vivieron, esa necesidad desesperada de conectar con otro ser humano, o quizás una forma de sentir que recuperan un poquito el control en una situación donde no tenían nada... ahí como que puedo entenderlo, como un mecanismo medio rebuscado para lidiar con todo, definitivamente es un momento que te deja recalculando.
Más adelante, hay toda una movida con un embarazo secreto que sale de esos encuentros.. para mí, personalmente, eso le sumó otra capa de problema heavy a esa conexión ya de por sí súper intensa que tenían. Sentí que era como echarle más leña al fuego, ¿entienden? Ya estaban recontra unidos por ese trauma gigante que compartieron; ¿necesitaban OTRA cosa más que les cambiara la vida para conectarlos? No es que me arruinó el libro ni nada, pero es un punto que seguro da para charlar.. ahora, una de las cosas que más me gustó, especialmente cuando la historia avanza y ya los vemos de grandes, es todo el misterio alrededor de un personaje medio enigmático que le dicen "El Coleccionista". Este tipo oscuro, supuestamente, tiene la posta para encontrar a los que los secuestraron y para entender el "por qué" de toda esa pesadilla que vivieron, eso le mete un suspenso y una intriga que están buenísimos, mientras Noel y Evan –con Evan ya como investigador– intentan dar con este tipo y juntar las piezas de su pasado.. esa parte de la investigación estuvo bien hecha y me tuvo pasando las páginas como loco.
A pesar de lo increíblemente duro y oscuro que es el contenido, y esas cositas de la trama que me hicieron dudar un poco, tengo que decir que All the Little Raindrops me pareció una lectura que te atrapa de verdad y que, al final, te queda grabada, claramente no es para cualquiera, eh, y es una historia que seguro te va a quedar dando vueltas en la cabeza un buen rato después de terminarla.. pero si son fans de los thrillers psicológicos oscuros, si les gustan esas historias que se meten bien adentro en cómo la gente aguanta las peores cosas, y si les atraen las tramas con personajes complejos y unidos por el trauma, entonces este podría ser justo para ustedes.. muchos que lo reseñaron, a pesar de lo heavy del contenido, lo recomiendan, y entiendo por qué; está bien escrito y te tiene al borde del asiento, yo, por mi parte, le daría unas 4/5, bien puestas.
Perdió esa estrella más que nada por la subtrama del embarazo que, como les dije, me pareció una complicación medio innecesaria en una historia que ya de por sí era pesada y compleja.. además, el ritmo, aunque en general está bueno, por momentos se sintió un poquito desparejo después de ese arranque tan, pero tan intenso. Pero en general, la escritura es potente, los personajes están re bien desarrollados y te llegan, y el misterio de fondo es lo suficientemente bueno como para mantenerte enganchadísimo.. así que, sí, All the Little Raindrops de Mia Sheridan, es intenso, es oscuro, muchas veces te revuelve el estómago, pero también es una historia poderosa sobre sobrevivir, sobre cómo te marca el trauma para siempre, y sobre esa lucha sin descanso por encontrar justicia. Si les gustan los temas fuertes y lo gráfico de algunas partes, yo diría que vale la pena echarle un ojo.. eso sí, entren sabiendo con qué se van a encontrar. ¡A leer se ha dicho! O bueno, quizás, en este caso particular, ¡a leer y a agarrarse fuerte!
