Hello everyone, friends of Hive, I hope you're doing great, this time I want to share with you a new review of a book that I found very interesting... it's about: The Guest List by Lucy Foley... it's one of those books that you devour in no time, if you're looking for a thriller with a lot of vibe, one of those quick ones to sink into for an afternoon, this one is great, to start with, the place where everything happens is a big part of the magic... imagine a super remote island, windswept, lost off the coast of Ireland. The author paints a picture of a dark, grey, kind of gloomy place... you know, the typical place where you say "something bad is going to happen here"... it seems like the island is made up, like she created it for the story, but it works great! It's so isolated, and the girl makes the most of that disturbing atmosphere.
There are some semi-dangerous swamps that sound like they're sucking you in, an ancient cemetery (obviously, it couldn't be missed!), and some semi-creepy caves where the characters, of course, spend their time wandering around. On top of that, the power keeps going out, and getting to the island is already an impossible mission, which only adds to that feeling of being in the middle of nowhere... it's the perfect setting for a wedding that's about to go to hell. And that's the main theme: a glamorous, celebrity wedding, the groom is a big-time TV star, the bride is a super-successful magazine editor, and everything is supposed to be perfect... but, as you can probably imagine, it's quite the opposite! Someone ends up dead (or at least disappears in a very suspicious way), and suddenly that whole top-notch party turns into the classic "who did the culprit?"
Hola a todos, amigos de Hive, espero que estén genial, en esta ocasión les quiero compartir una nueva reseña, de un libro que me resultó muy interesante.. de trata de: The Guest List de Lucy Foley.. es de esos libros que te devoras en nada, si andan buscando un thriller con mucha onda, de esos rapiditos para clavarte una tarde, este es genial, para empezar, el lugar donde pasa todo es gran parte de la magia.. imagínense una isla súper remota, azotada por el viento, allá perdida en la costa de Irlanda. La autora te pinta un cuadro de un sitio oscuro, gris, medio lúgubre... ya saben, el típico lugar donde decís "acá va a pasar algo feo".. parece que la isla es inventada, onda que la creó ella para la historia, pero ¡funciona bárbaro!
Es que está tan aislada, y la chica le saca todo el jugo a esa atmósfera inquietante, hay unos pantanos medio peligrosos que suenan a que te chupan para adentro, un cementerio antiguo (¡obvio, no podía faltar!) y unas cuevas medio tétricas por donde los personajes, ¡cómo no!, se la pasan dando vueltas. Encima, la luz se corta a cada rato, y llegar a la isla ya es una misión imposible, lo que te mete más en esa sensación de estar en el medio de la nada.. es el escenario perfecto para una boda que está a punto de irse al carajo. Y esa es la onda principal: una boda glamorosa, de celebridades, el novio es una estrella de televisión que está pegando fuerte, la novia una editora de revistas súper exitosa, y se supone que todo tiene que ser perfecto.. pero, como ya se estarán imaginando, ¡todo lo contrario! Alguien termina muerto (o al menos desaparece de forma muy sospechosa), y de repente toda esa fiesta top se convierte en el clásico "¿quién fue el culpable?".
Well, the thing is that the story is told in two time periods, two timelines, and I love that... one shows you how the guests arrive and everything that happens before the wedding, and then everything gets more tense and you see the fights everyone has. The other jumps to the day of the wedding, after someone has been killed, and everyone is trying to understand what the hell happened. Plus, it's told from the perspective of several characters, and there are a lot of them! I was a bit afraid of getting lost with so many characters, but the truth is that Foley really goes for it and most of them have their own distinct vibe, even if that "vibe" is that they are unbearable... now, hold on, because the characters... are, almost all of them, horrible people, the worst: egocentric, despicable, disgusting... many are the typical "daddy's boys", super privileged, conceited... they reminded me a bit of the ones in Gossip Girl... they all have horrible motivations, they think horrible things and they have more secrets than... I don't know!
Seriously, each one has their dead body, but, and here's the weird part, they are super entertaining to read! You just want to see what stupid or horrible thing they are going to do next, and how their whole mask begins to fall off... the book is read very quickly, it is not very long, about 300 pages or so, and the chapters are short! You know those books where you say, "Come on, one more, it's only three pages," and before you know it, you're already halfway through. You can easily finish it in an afternoon if you have time... it's one of those books that once you get hooked, you won't put it down.
Bueno, la onda es que la historia te la cuentan en dos tiempos, dos líneas temporales, y eso a mí me encanta.. una te va mostrando cómo llegan los invitados y todo lo que pasa antes de la boda, y ahí se va poniendo todo más tenso y vas viendo las broncas que se traen todos, la otra salta al día de la boda, ya después de que mataron a alguien, y todos están tratando de entender qué carajo pasó. Además, te lo cuentan desde la perspectiva de varios personajes, ¡y son un montón! A mí me daba un poco de cosa perderme con tanto personaje, pero la verdad que Foley se la juega y la mayoría tienen su onda bien marcada, aunque esa "onda" sea que son insoportables.. ahora, agárrense, porque los personajes... son, casi todos, gente horrible, de lo peor: egocéntricos, despreciables, un asco.. muchos son los típicos "nenes de papá", súper privilegiados, creídos... me hicieron acordar un poco a los de Gossip Girl.. todos tienen unas motivaciones espantosas, piensan cosas horribles y tienen más secretos que... ¡no sé!
En serio, cada uno tiene su muerto, pero, y acá viene lo raro, ¡son súper entretenidos de leer! Uno solo quiere ver qué estupidez o qué cosa espantosa van a hacer después, y cómo se les empieza a caer toda la careta.. el libro se lee rapidísimo, no es muy largo, unas 300 páginas más o menos, y los capítulos son ¡cortitos! Viste esos que decís: "Dale, uno más, si son tres paginitas", y cuando te quieres dar cuenta, ya vas por la mitad, tranquilamente te lo puedes liquidar en una tarde si la tienes libre.. es de esos libros que una vez que te enganchas, no lo sueltas.
I liked how the characters’ stories and secrets gradually intertwine... as you read, they throw in these little revelations that connect them in ways you never imagined. The big problem, obviously, is who the killer is... for me, although the journey captivates you, I have to say that some parts of the ending seemed kind of predictable, you know? The who did it and why didn’t seem to surprise me that much; it sounded kind of meh to me, like I’ve seen similar things before... but be careful, other people might be surprised. What really kept me on edge was trying to guess who the victim was going to be, because almost everyone deserved a good scare, ha!
The Guest List is a good time, pure entertainment, it is a dark, raw thriller, yes, but don’t expect it to get deep into people’s heads or explore deep themes… it’s a very direct murder mystery that relies heavily on the drama between the characters and the vibe of the place, if you are looking for something that will make you think for a thousand hours, this is not it… but if you want something that is a one-time read, with an incredible place and characters that you will love to hate, it is fun! So, my score for The Guest List is 3.5/5 stars… I really enjoyed reading it, it was fast-paced, very vibey, the place where everything happens was great, the pace too, and the shitty characters, weird as it sounds, were the best!
I lowered a few points because the ending seemed a bit obvious to me, very resolved, and it's not a book that's going to stick with me as the most original mystery in the world... if you like those "locked in a house" type mysteries, Agatha Christie style (but with much more crass people), and you don't mind the characters being detestable, then I say give it a chance... it's ideal for a rainy weekend, when you want to immerse yourself in some fun drama and suspense.
Me gustó cómo las historias y los secretos de los personajes se van entrelazando de a poquito.. mientras vas leyendo, te van tirando esas pequeñas revelaciones que los conectan de formas que ni te imaginabas, el gran problema, obvio, es quién es el asesino.. para mí, aunque el viaje te atrapa, tengo que decir que algunas partes del final me parecieron medio predecibles, ¿viste? El quién lo hizo y por qué, como que no me sorprendió tanto; me sonó medio meh, como que ya vi cosas parecidas.. pero ojo, a otra gente seguro le puede sorprender, lo que sí me tuvo más en vilo fue tratar de adivinar quién iba a ser la víctima, porque ¡casi todos se merecían un buen susto, ja!
The Guest List es para pasarla bien, puro entretenimiento, es un thriller oscuro, crudo, sí, pero no esperen que se meta a fondo en la cabeza de la gente o que explore temas profundos..es un misterio de asesinato bien directo que se apoya mucho en el drama entre los personajes y en la onda del lugar, si buscan algo que los haga pensar mil horas, este no es.. pero si quieren algo que se lea de una, con un lugar increíble y personajes que te va a encantar odiar, ¡es divertido! Así que, mi puntaje para The Guest List es un 3.5/5 estrellas.. me gustó mucho leerlo, fue rápido, con mucha onda, el lugar donde pasa todo estuvo genial, el ritmo también, y los personajes de mierda, aunque suene raro, ¡fueron lo más!
Le bajé unos puntitos porque el final me pareció medio cantado, como muy resuelto, y no es un libro que me vaya a quedar grabado como el misterio más original del mundo.. si les gustan esos misterios tipo "encerrados en una casa", onda Agatha Christie (pero con gente mucho más forra), y no les molesta que los personajes sean detestables, entonces yo digo que le den una chance.. es ideal para un finde de lluvia, cuando quieres meterte de lleno en un poco de drama y suspenso divertido.
