Hello everyone, my fellow reading fanatics, the great Hive Book Club community, I hope you're all doing great. This time, I want to talk about a novel that blew my mind, and I wanted to tell you all about it as soon as possible. I'm sure you've heard of Freida McFadden, she's become quite well-known, and I recently finished "Ward D", and I'm so happy! Because I feel like I've found a new author to read all her books, and that's the best feeling in the world. It's a psychological thriller, and I'm hooked. The vibe is about Amy, a medical student who has to work night shifts in the psychiatric ward of a hospital... From there you can feel the vibe: grim, kind of creepy! And you already know things are going to get interesting. Amy is already on edge because, I mean, night shift! Everything feels weird, and to top it all off, her ex ends up on the same shift... But look, something McFadden does brilliantly is the double timeline.
So, we’re jumping between what Amy’s going through now in the psychiatric ward, which is getting scarier and scarier, and her past, like her childhood and her super complicated relationship with her best friend, Jade, and Jade happens to be a patient too, right there, in the same place where Amy is working… how cool! And this back and forth, people, works like a charm! It keeps you on the edge of your seat, just when things get tense in the present, bam! It sends you to a chapter in the past that gives you more clues about Amy and Jade’s story, and you’re dying to get back to the present to see what happens, it’s a clever move to keep you glued to the book, and the whole time you’re like a detective trying to piece together the puzzle of how the past connects to all the mess that’s going on in Ward D.
Hola a todos, amigos fanáticos de la lectura, gran comunidad de Hive Book Club, espero que estén super bien, en esta ocasión, les quiero hablar de una novela que me dejó impactado, y quería venir a contarles lo antes posible, seguro les suena el nombre de Freida McFadden, se ha vuelto bastante conocida, y recientemente termine "Ward D", estoy ¡feliz! porque siento que encontré una nueva autora para clavarme todos sus libros, y esa es la mejor sensación del mundo, es un thriller psicológico, y me engancho, la onda va de Amy, una estudiante de medicina que le toca guardia de noche en el ala psiquiátrica de un hospital.. desde ahí se siente la vibra: ¡tétrica, medio creepy!, y uno ya sabe que se va a poner interesante la cosa, Amy ya de por sí está con los nervios de punta porque, o sea, ¡turno de noche!, todo se siente raro, y para rematar, su ex termina cayendo en la misma guardia.. pero miren, algo que McFadden hace ¡genial! es la doble línea de tiempo.
O sea, vamos saltando entre lo que Amy está viviendo ahora en el psiquiátrico, que se pone cada vez más de miedo, y su pasado, onda su niñez y la relación súper complicada con su mejor amiga, Jade, y Jade resulta que también es paciente ¡ahí mismo!, en el mismo lugar donde Amy está trabajando.. qué fuerte! Y este ir y venir, gente, ¡funciona de maravilla! Te tiene al borde del asiento, justo cuando la cosa se pone tensa en el presente, ¡zas!, te manda a un capítulo del pasado que te da más pistas sobre la historia de Amy y Jade, y te mueres de ganas por volver al presente para ver qué onda, es una jugada inteligente para tenerte pegado al libro, y todo el tiempo estás como detective tratando de armar el rompecabezas de cómo el pasado se conecta con todo el desmadre que está pasando en Ward D.
And not to mention terrifying, people.. once Amy’s on that ward for her shift, it’s clear she can’t just grab her things and leave. Doors are locked, things start disappearing, patients get weirder than usual, and one formerly dangerous patient, locked in isolation, suddenly goes really quiet, and that’s even scarier! Amy’s hell-bent on figuring out what the hell is going on, even though you can tell she’s scared to death.. you’re right there with her, feeling that claustrophobia and the mounting panic. The characters are definitely great. You identify with Amy immediately; she’s not perfect, but you root for her, and McFadden very subtly instills doubt in you, and I loved how he did it! It creeps in little by little, and by the end, you end up questioning everything... then there's Jade, Amy's childhood friend... she's one of those characters you just love to hate, you know?
The relationship between them is super dynamic, really complex, with a ton of history and, to be honest, quite a bit of pent-up bad vibes... and the patients on the ward really leave you thinking, there's a guy, Spider Dan, who keeps dropping semi-sinister warnings about a patient named Damien, who's going to escape and kill them all. At first, Amy might not pay much attention, but his warnings add to that constant current of terror. I'm not lying when I say that this book really absorbs you... a friend of mine devoured it in less than 24 hours, and I totally get it!
I couldn't put it down... I needed, really needed!, to know what was going to happen. The pacing is off the charts, especially with those heart-in-your-throat chapter endings, right in between the two timelines. If you’re looking for a book that keeps you guessing and has some great plot twists, guys! McFadden is a genius at that… just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, BAM! she throws something in that leaves you speechless, completely thrown off, the ending was insane: it both satisfies and surprises you, which is exactly what you expect from a thriller! Now, some might say that the writing style is a bit basic… yeah, if you’re looking for super literary, overly ornate prose, maybe this isn’t the book for you… but honestly, the plot is so powerful and the story is so gripping that it more than makes up for any simplicity you might find in the writing… it’s pure entertainment.
Y ni hablar de lo terrorífico, gente.. una vez que Amy está en ese pabellón para su turno, se siente clarito que no puede simplemente agarrar sus cosas e irse, las puertas están cerradas con llave, empiezan a desaparecer cosas, los pacientes se ponen más raros de lo normal, y un paciente que es un peligro, encerrado en una habitación de aislamiento, de repente se queda calladito, ¡y eso da más miedo todavía! Amy está empecinada en averiguar qué diablos está pasando, aunque se note que está muerta de miedo.. estás ahí con ella, sintiendo esa claustrofobia y el pánico que va creciendo, los personajes son, sin duda, un puntazo.. con Amy te identificas al toque; no es perfecta, pero la apoyas, además, McFadden, muy sutilmente, te va metiendo la duda sobre ella, ¡y eso me encantó cómo lo hizo! Se va colando de a poquito, y al final, terminas cuestionándote todo.. luego está Jade, la amiga de la infancia de Amy... es de esos personajes que simplemente amas odiar, ¿vieron?
La relación entre ellas es superdinámica, re compleja, con un montón de historia y, siendo honestos, bastante mala onda acumulada.. y los pacientes del pabellón, posta que te dejan pensando, hay un tipo, Spider Dan, que no para de tirar advertencias medio siniestras sobre un paciente llamado Damien, que se va a escapar y los va a matar a todos. Al principio, Amy capaz que no le das mucha atención, pero sus advertencias le van sumando a esa corriente de terror constante. No les estoy mintiendo cuando les digo que este libro te absorbe de una manera increíble.. un amigo se lo devoró en menos de 24 horas, ¡y lo entiendo perfecto!
Yo no lo podía soltar.. necesitaba, ¡pero necesitaba!, saber qué iba a pasar. El ritmo es una bomba, especialmente con esos finales de capítulo que te dejan con el corazón en la garganta, justo entre las dos líneas de tiempo, si andan buscando un libro que los tenga adivinando y tenga buenos giros de la trama, gente! McFadden es una genia para eso.. justo cuando crees que ya entendiste todo, ¡PUM!, te tira algo que te deja con la boca abierta, totalmente descolocado, el final fue una locura: te deja satisfecho y te sorprende, ¡que es exactamente lo que uno espera de un thriller! Ahora, alguno podría decir que la forma de escribir es un poco básica.. sí, si están buscando una prosa súper literaria, onda muy adornada, capaz este no es el libro.. pero, sinceramente, la trama es tan potente y la historia te atrapa tanto, que compensa con creces cualquier simpleza que le puedan ver a la escritura.. es puro entretenimiento.
And another thing I loved, people, is that the thriller is super easy to get the hang of... I mean, yes, everything happens in a psychiatric hospital and the characters are medical students, but you don't need to be a brainiac or know anything about medicine to understand what's going on, McFadden explains everything clearly without putting a lot of weird words that nobody understands. Because there are content warnings, you will find blood, deaths, it talks about when someone's parents die, and it touches on mental illness, such as schizophrenia and psychosis, and obviously, murder... so, if you are sensitive to that, keep that in mind.
So who is this book for? Look, if you like psychological thrillers that go a mile a minute, this is the one for you! If you love those authors that hold your heart in your hand and pull out some plot twists that leave you “wheeeee!”, you have to read it, it's one of those perfect books to devour in a hurry. For me, “Ward D” was, whew, a five star read, no doubt about it! I had a blast: thrilling, suspenseful, and I was totally into the story from beginning to end, it's one of those books that reminds me why I love thrillers so, so much. I'm already looking forward to more of Freida McFadden's books! And well, so much for today's review, see you in the next reviews, take care! Byebye!
Y otra cosa que me encantó, gente, es que el thriller es súper fácil de agarrarle la onda.. o sea, sí, todo pasa en un hospital psiquiátrico y los personajes son estudiantes de medicina, pero no necesitas ser un cerebrito ni saber nada de medicina para entender qué está pasando, McFadden te explica todo clarito sin meterte un montón de palabras raras que nadie entiende. Eso sí, ¡porque hay advertencias de contenido, van a encontrar sangre, muertes, se habla de cuando se mueren los papás de alguien, y toca temas de enfermedades mentales, como esquizofrenia y psicosis, y obvio, asesinatos.. así que, si son sensibles a eso, ténganlo en cuenta.
Entonces, ¿para quién es este libro? Miren, si a ustedes les gustan los thrillers psicológicos que van a mil por hora, ¡este es el suyo! Si les encantan esos autores que te tienen con el corazón en la mano y te sacan unos giros en la trama que te dejan ¡quéeee!, tienen que leerlo, es de esos libros perfectos para devorártelo rapidito. Para mí, "Ward D" fue, ¡uf!, una lectura de cinco estrellas, ¡sin dudarlo! Me la pasé ¡genial!: emocionante, lleno de suspenso, y estuve totalmente metido en la historia de principio a fin, es de esos libros que me recuerdan por qué me gustan tanto, tanto los thrillers. Ya estoy ¡con unas ganas bárbaras! de clavarme más libros de Freida McFadden.. Y bueno, hasta aquí la reseña de hoy, nos veremos en las próximas reseñas, cuidense! Byebye!
