Talking about Dune is not an easy task since it is a complex work with many details as if it were talking about Tolkien's works, but in this case, we are talking about a novel that harmoniously mixes fantasy with science fiction.
Dune shows us a vast world where planets are interconnected under an empire, something typical of space opera, however, the ecological theme of Dune is one of the most important
aspects.
Arrakis, the main planet of the Universe of Dune, is a desert planet but also the only place where melange is found, which is like a drug that gives psychic powers. The individuals who live there called Fremen use suits that recycle sweat called stillsuits and from there we can sense where the whole ecological question is going. The search for melange as the engine of the Universe, the struggle for power, religion, and politics are fundamental themes in this novel.
Hablar de Dune no es una tarea fácil ya que es una obra compleja con muchos detalles, como si de las obras de Tolkien se tratase pero en este caso estamos hablando de una novela que mezcla armoniosamente la fantasía con la ciencia ficción.
Dune nos muestra un vasto mundo donde planetas están interconectados bajo un imperio, algo típico de la opera espacial, sin embargo el tema ecológico de Dune es uno de los aspectos más importantes.
Arrakis, planeta principal del Universo de Dune, es un planeta desértico pero también el único sitio en donde se encuentra la melange la cual es como una droga que da poderes psíquicos. Los individuos que viven allí llamados fremen utilizan unos trajes que reciclan el sudor, llamados destiltrajes y por allí podemos intuir a donde va toda la cuestión ecológica. La búsqueda de melange como motor del Universo, la lucha por el poder, la religión y la política son temas fundamentales en esta novela.
This is a fairly original novel that borrows elements from science fiction and fantasy. Although there are spaceships there is no kind of computer, only individuals called mentat who play the role of computer, these individuals have the ability to do calculations quickly. Technology is not exactly the most important point in this novel, it is a completely different world.
The story itself revolves around Paul Atreides belonging to the Atreides duchy. Emperor Shaddam IV gives an order to the Atreides family to reside on Arrakis, a hostile and desert planet as mentioned above. Before leaving Paul receives a visit from a Bene Gesserit (the Bene Gesserit are women prepared physically and mentally to obtain powers and magic, they are used under a political and religious context) which prophesies a messianic future for the young man.
Esta es una novela bastante original que toma prestado elementos de la ciencia ficción y de la fantasía. Si bien hay naves espaciales no hay ninguna especie de computador, solo individuos llamados mentat que hacen el rol de computadora, estos individuos poseen la capacidad de hacer cálculos rápidamente. La tecnología no es precisamente el punto más importante en esta novela, es un mundo completamente distinto.
En si la historia gira en torno a Paul Atreides perteneciente al ducado Atreides. El emperador Shaddam IV le da una orden a la familia Atreides a residir en Arrakis, un planeta hostil y desértico como lo mencione anteriormente. Antes de partir Paul recibe la visita de una Bene Gesserit (las Bene Gesserit son mujeres preparadas física y mentalmente para obtener poderes y magia, son usadas bajo un contexto político y religioso) la cual profetiza un futuro mesiánico para el joven.
On this planet Paul meets the Fremen, a race that glorifies water as an essential part of their life in a religious sense. He moves away from his family, the house of Atreides to live with the native Fremen, becoming one and even changing his name to Muad’Dib. On this planet, there are terrible worms of up to 400 meters in charge of the production of sand in Arrakis.
Our main character, Paul Atreides has dictated a destiny as a kind of messiah and he achieves it through the Fremen. As you can see, the novel revolves around a highly religious and political context. The struggles for the power of the emperor, his betrayal of the Atreides house, the messianic power that Paul gains through the Fremen who are then willing to give their lives for their leader. The Bene Gesserit takes a crucial part in genetic development and Paul is included in all of that, being the long-awaited Kwisatz Haderach, a Bene Gesserit male.
En este planeta Paul conoce a los fremen, una raza que glorifica al agua como parte esencial de su vida en un aspecto religioso. Se aleja de su familia, la casa de Atreides para convivir con los nativos fremen, convirtiéndose en uno y hasta cambiando su nombre a Muad’Dib. En este planeta existen unos terribles gusanos de hasta 400 metros encargados de la producción de arena en Arrakis.
Nuestro personaje principal, Paul Atreides se le dicto un destino como una especie de mesías y así lo consigue a través de los fremen. Como podrán notar la novela gira en un contexto altamente religioso y político. Las luchas por el poder del emperador, la traición que este le hace a la casa Atreides, el poder mesiánico que consigue Paul a través de los fremen que luego están dispuestos a dar su vida por su líder. Las Bene Gesserit toman una parte crucial en el desarrollo genético y Paul está incluido en todo eso, siendo el tan esperado Kwisatz Haderach, un hombre Bene Gesserit.
Paul's ultimate destiny is to wage a jihad across the universe, a galactic war. It is easy to deduce that Frank Herbert had Middle Eastern influences when writing this novel, some terms and also the desert landscapes, which are so well detailed that the experience of reading the novel makes us feel for a moment really in Arrakis .
Personally, this is one of the best written science fiction novels of all time, Herbert's prose is very elaborate, something that is not usual in this genre that is limited to almost graphically telling what happens. The fact of creating such a Universe, with entire families, empires, political, social and religious organizations in such an original way is what I respect the most in this work.
Few works have reached this level of detail. When reading it, you will realize that you will be immersed in a completely different world, it has nothing to do with warships with spaceships, or laser swords, or advanced technology, it is a unique world where science fiction meets fantasy but a masterful way, in my opinion never repeated.
El destino final de Paul es hacer una Yihad en todo el universo, una guerra galáctica. Es fácil deducir que Frank Herbert tuvo influencias de medio oriente a la hora de escribir esta novela, algunos términos y también los paisajes desérticos, los cuales están tan bien detallados que la experiencia al leer la novela hace que nos sintamos por un momento realmente en Arrakis.
Personalmente esta es una de las novelas mejor escritas de ciencia ficción de todos los tiempos, la prosa de Herbert es muy elaborada cosa que no es usual en este género que se limita a contar casi gráficamente lo que sucede. El hecho de crear un Universo así, con familias enteras, imperios, organizaciones políticas, sociales y religiosas de una manera tan original es lo que más respeto de este trabajo.
Pocas obras han alcanzado este nivel de detalle. Al leerla podrán darse cuenta de que estarán sumergidos en un mundo completamente distinto, no tiene nada que ver con guerras de naves espaciales, ni espadas laser, ni tecnología avanzada, es un mundo único en donde la ciencia ficción se cruza con la fantasía pero de una manera magistral, en mi opinión nunca repetida.
Recommending Dune as one of the best science fiction novels is easy, however its reading is dense, as I said before the level of detail is neat and if you pay special attention you can imagine that whole world perfectly.
They have tried a couple of times to visually recreate this work in film and television but without success and it is because of the complexity that it requires to do so, I don't think it is a precisely easy job but a great production based on this novel is expected for this year that all fans hope does it justice.
With all that said, Dune is just the beginning of a saga of 6 books, where you can know in depth everything that happened before and after with the Atreides house and other things. Then Herbert's son published many other books more related to this same Universe but that did not end up being accepted by the fans (very similar to the same thing that Christopher Tolkien did). Personally, I have not read the books that Herbert's son has written, but as soon as I have the opportunity, I will.
Without further to add, I highly recommend reading this novel that I personally propose as among the top 5 of all science fiction titles I have read. A novel that will make us aware of our environment but above all it will make us hallucinate exotic landscapes that could only be conceived by the mastermind of Frank Herbert.
Recomendar a Dune como una de las mejores novelas de ciencia ficción es fácil sin embargo su lectura es densa, como dije anteriormente el nivel de detalle es pulcro y si prestas especial atención podrás imaginar todo ese mundo a la perfección.
Se han intentado un par de veces de recrear visualmente esta obra en el cine y la televisión pero sin éxito y es por la complejidad que requiere hacerlo, no creo que sea un trabajo precisamente fácil pero se espera para este año una gran producción basada en esta novela que todos los fans esperamos que le haga justicia.
Con todo lo dicho, Dune es solo el inicio de una saga de 6 libros, donde puedes conocer a fondo todo lo ocurrido anterior y posteriormente con la casa Atreides y demás cosas. Luego el hijo de Herbert publico otros tantos libros más relacionados con este mismo Universo pero que no terminaron de ser aceptados por los fans (muy parecido a lo mismo que hizo Christopher Tolkien). Personalmente no he leído los libros que ha hecho el hijo de Herbert pero en cuanto tenga la oportunidad lo hare.
Sin más que agregar, recomiendo altamente la lectura de esta novela que propongo personalmente como entre las 5 mejores de entre todos los títulos que he leído de ciencia ficción. Una novela que nos hará concientizar sobre nuestro ambiente pero sobre todo nos hará alucinar exóticos paisajes que solo pudieron ser concebidos por la mente maestra de Frank Herbert.

Creo que no he leído algún libro de ciencia ficción que no tenga tecnología ultra avanzada o naves espaciales, sería muy interesante leer un libro que dentro del género se enfoque en un aspecto social, como las luchas por poder que relatas acá.
Te recomiendo darle una oportunidad es de los mejores titulos que hay en el genero. Una obra maestra con mucha extensión.
