October is a month that many look forward to in the year, the month of 🎃Halloween, costumes, pumpkins, horror premieres in theaters, 🍬 candy or tricks, monsters, 😖 ghosts, zombies and how many terrifying stories come out of the human imagination. It's the perfect season to share terrifying stories. But sometimes, just sometimes, the worst monsters are not fictional, they are among us, not in a Stephen King novel, a Poe tale or a Lovecraft story. Sometimes reality surpasses fiction and evil can be anywhere, even in the most unexpected object, the most harmless, such as a book 📘.
On this occasion I come to share with you a (true) story somewhat chilling, surrounding a particular book. It is not a horror story, nor a terrifying novel, it is a novel that became controversial for its provocative language and for portraying the conflicts of adolescence, such as bullying and sexuality. One of the most censored, but also one of the most read books in the United States🇺🇸.
But what I am about to tell you, although it is related to this book, happened in real life. It is not in its plot where the misfortune lies, but in a series of events in which it has been involved. Imagine if this book did not exist, maybe, just maybe, John Lennon would still be alive. That's right, the title in question is directly related to the murder of the former Beatles, and, if that weren't enough, to two other crimes.
Let's go through these disturbing events one by one:
1. He murders Lennon in cold blood and sits, waiting for the police reading a book.
This could very well have been one of the headlines in the press after that fateful December 8, 1980, when the world mourned the unexpected loss of the rock idol.

The perpetrator of this crime was a 25-year-old man (at the time) named Mark David Chapman. He waited for Lennon at the entrance of the building where he lived with his wife Yoko Ono and fired 5 shots in cold blood, 4 of which mortally wounded the singer-songwriter of "Imagine".

The exact motives, or what may have gone through his head, are things we may never know for certain. But the reality is that this damn book was, in large part, responsible for these tragic events.
2. Attempted assassination of the President of the United States.
A year later, in 1981, John Hinckley Jr. (also 25 years old) attempted to assassinate the then President of the United States, Ronald Reagan. The assassination attempt missed by a few inches and the culprit was diagnosed with psychosis and narcissistic personality disorder, claiming that his intention was to kill the president to impress actress Jodie Foster, with whom he had become obsessed after watching the movie Taxi driver 15 times (source). Hinckley also claimed that throughout his life he was obsessed with J.D. Salinger's book. coincidence?
3.Murdered after suffering three years of harassment.
Finally, the actress Rebeca Lucile Schaeffer after being stalked for 3 years was murdered at the door of her apartment by Robert John Bardó, the murderer was arrested while holding in his hands, a book, the same book that we already know.

En esta ocasión vengo a compartirles una historia (real) un tanto escalofriante, que rodea a un libro en particular. No es un cuento de horror, ni una novela terrorífica, es una novela que llegó a provocar controversias por su lenguaje provocador y por retratar los conflictos de la adolescencia, como el acoso y la sexualidad. Uno de los libros más censurados, pero también más leídos de Estados Unidos.
Pero lo que vengo a contarles, aunque está relacionado con este libro, pasó en la vida real. No es en su trama donde se encuentra la desgracia, sino en una serie de acontecimientos en los que se ha visto involucrado. Imagínense ustedes que si este libro no existiera, tal vez, solo tal vez, John Lennon seguiría vivo. Así es, el título en cuestión está relacionado directamente con el asesinato del ex Beatles, y, por si eso fuera poco, con otros dos crímenes más.
Repasemos uno a uno estos inquietantes sucesos:
1. Asesina a sangre fría a Lennon y se sienta, tranquilamente, a esperar a la policía leyendo un libro
Este pudo haber sido perfectamente uno de los titulares de la prensa tras aquel fatídico 8 de diciembre de 1980, cuando el mundo se vistió de luto al perder de manera inesperada al ídolo del rock.
