My dear literature-loving friends, like all of you, I love storytelling. But before we delve into the vast literary world of novels, almost all of us began in the world of fairy tales. At first, we heard them from our mothers, and later they became our first books. Throughout all of this, the popular Brothers Grimm were present, whose often risqué stories were softened over the years to protect the minds of modern children 😄. But now that I'm an adult, and still as enamored with fairy tales as when I was a child, I've dedicated myself to reading each of the original stories and analyzing them in depth, because there's much more to each one than meets the eye. That's why this time I bring you The King Thrushbeard.
Mis queridos amigos amantes de la literatura, como todos ustedes yo amo la narrativa, pero antes de sumergirnos en el vasto mundo literario de las novelas, todos o casi todos nosotros hemos iniciado en el mundo de los cuentos de hadas, al principio los escuchábamos de nuestras madres y posteriormente se convirtieron en nuestras primeras lecturas, y en todo esto estaban presentes los populares hermanos Grimm, cuyas historias, a menudo escabrosas, fueron suavizadas a lo largo de los años para proteger la mente de los niños modernos 😄 pero ahora que soy adulta, y sigo tan enamorada de los cuentos de hadas como cuando era una niña, me he dedicado a la labor de leer cada uno de los cuentos originales y analizarlos a profundidad, porque en cada uno de ellos hay mucho más de lo que se percibe a simple vista. Por eso en esta ocasión traigo para ustedes El Rey Pico de Tordo.
Overview/Resumen
She was a very beautiful princess, but with a terrible temper. She was very haughty and proud, always looking down on others. Her father, the king, organized banquets and brought the most sought-after suitors from all the kingdoms for her to choose from (even though choosing was one of the greatest privileges for a woman at that time), but she flatly rejected them all, not without first cruelly mocking them because they all seemed too tall, or too short, too fat, or too thin, or too pale—in short, she even used nicknames to refer to them all. On one occasion, the king brought in other suitors, and one of them caught her eye, but she rejected him because upon closer inspection she noticed he had a prominent chin, so she said, "This must be King Thrush-Beak, because his chin looks like a thrush's beak." The king, very angry, told her he was tired of this situation, so from that moment on she had to marry the first man who asked her, regardless of his humble origins.
Se trata de una princesa muy bella pero con un temperamento horrible, era muy altiva y orgullosa, siempre despreciando a los demás. Su padre, el rey, organizaba banquetes y traía a los más cotizados pretendientes de todos los reinos para que ella eligiera (aún cuando elegir era uno de los más grandes privilegios para una mujer en esa época) pero ella los rechazaba tajantemente, no sin antes mofarse con crueldad porque todos le parecían muy altos, o muy bajos, muy gordos o flacos o pálidos, en fin, incluso usaba motes para referirse a todos ellos. En una ocasión, el rey volvió a traer a otros pretendientes y a ella le llamó a la atención uno de ellos, pero luego lo rechazó porque al mirarlo con más detenimiento notó que él tenía una barbilla prominente, así que dijo "este debe ser el rey pico de tordo, porque su barbilla parece al pico de un tordo" El rey, muy enojado le dijo que ya estaba cansado de esa situación, así que a partir de ese momento ella debía casarse con el primer hombre que se lo pidiera, sin importar su origen humilde.
The next day, a ragged minstrel arrived at the palace and sang a beautiful song at the foot of the princess's window. The king, so flattered by his song, offered the princess her hand in marriage. Since she would no longer be considered noble but the wife of a mere minstrel, he banished her from the palace. When the couple arrived at the minstrel's humble home, the princess was horrified by both the austerity and the realization that from that moment on, she would have to manage everything herself without servants. The minstrel tried to teach her to weave wicker baskets, but the strips hurt her delicate hands. She couldn't spin yarn for the same reason either, and the only thing she was successful at was selling earthenware dishes he brought with him. She would stand on a corner of the market and sell them all simply because she was so beautiful and attracted customers. But one day, a horseman galloped through the market and, as he crossed that corner, shattered all the dishes with his hooves.
Al día siguiente un trovador andrajoso llegó al palacio y cantó una bella canción al pie de la ventana de la princesa, el rey, al oírlo quedó tan halagado con su canción que le ofreció la mano de la princesa, y como ella ya no sería considerada noble sino la esposa de un simple trovador, la expulsó del palacio. Cuando la pareja llegó al humilde hogar del trovador, la princesa se horrorizó tanto por la austeridad como por el hecho de saber que a partir de ese momento ella debía encargarse de todo sin sirvientes. El trovador intentó hacer que ella tejiera cestas de mimbre, pero las tiras herían sus delicadas manos, tampoco podía hilar por la misma razón, y lo único en lo que tuvo éxito fue en vender vajillas de barro que él traía, ella se ponía en una esquina del mercado y las vendía todas solo porque era muy bella y atraía a los compradores, pero en una ocasión un jinete pasó a toda velocidad por el mercado y al cruzar en esa esquina quebró toda la vajilla con los cascos de su caballo.
She returned home furious and told her husband everything. He also scolded her for her recklessness in standing on a street corner selling such fragile items, so he found her a job as a maid in the kitchen of King Thrushbeard's palace. There, she had to work very hard, and little by little, she lost her haughty temper and arrogance. One night, she was very sad to learn that King Thrushbeard was getting married, and she truly regretted having treated him so badly, not only him but all the people she had humiliated and mistreated throughout her life. But just then, the king appeared behind her and revealed the truth: he and the minstrel were the same person, as was the rider who had smashed the crockery. He and the princess's father had conspired to do all of this in an attempt to make her reflect, and fortunately, it worked. So that very day, the princess and King Thrushbeard were married and lived happily ever after.
Ella regresó muy enojada a casa y le contó todo a su marido, él también la increpó por su imprudencia al ponerse precisamente en una esquina a vender todo eso que era tan frágil, así que le encontró trabajo como criada en la cocina del palacio precisamente del rey Pico de Tordo, allí ella tuvo que trabajar muchísimo, y poco a poco fue perdiendo su temperamento altivo y la arrogancia. Una noche ella estaba muy triste al saber que el rey Pico de Tordo se casaría, y de verdad lamentaba haberlo tratado tan mal, no solo a él sino a todas las personas que humilló y maltrató a lo largo de su vida, pero justo en ese momento el rey apareció detrás de ella y le reveló la verdad, él y el trovador eran la misma persona, y también el jinete que destrozó la vajilla, él y el padre de la princesa se habían puesto de acuerdo en hacer todo eso en un intento de hacerla reflexionar, y afortunadamente funcionó, así que ese mismo día la princesa y el rey Pico de Tordo se casaron y vivieron felices.
My Opinion/Mi Opinión
If we transpose this story to the present day, we'll obviously find many questionable aspects 😄 but this tale arose in a very different historical, political, social, and cultural context. As I mentioned at the beginning of the summary, women couldn't even choose their husbands, let alone noblewomen, so our princess was truly a woman with far more privileges than she deserved, which is perhaps why she believed herself invincible, untouchable, or unattainable. We can understand her not wanting to marry, or at least not finding someone among the suitors with whom she felt any connection, but what was truly infuriating was her awful attitude of despising and humiliating everyone simply because she wanted to and could.
Si trasladamos este cuento a la época actual obviamente que encontraremos muchas cosas cuestionables 😄 pero obviamente este cuento surgió en un contexto histórico, político, social y cultural muy diferente, como dije al inicio del resumen, las mujeres ni siquiera podía elegir a sus maridos y menos aún las mujeres nobles, así que nuestra princesa era en verdad una mujer con muchos más privilegios de los que le correspondían, razón por la cuál tal vez se creía invencible, intocable o inalcanzable. Podemos entender el hecho de que no quisiera casarse, o que al menos no encontrara a alguien entre los pretendientes con el que tuviera algún tipo de conexión, pero lo que realmente molestaba era su horrible actitud de despreciar y humillar a todos solo porque quería y podía hacerlo.
Something I immediately noticed is that the story touches on themes like humility, pride, social inequality, and the moral transformation of people after experiencing firsthand what the less fortunate endure. Only through hard work was the princess able to see and value her former privileges, but she also came to understand that those she considered inferior also had dreams, aspirations, families, and hopes; that they got tired or sick because they, too, are human beings, like her, not insensitive objects. She also understood that all the attention she had previously received was valuable: food doesn't cook itself, dishes don't serve themselves, and clothes don't appear by magic. She understood this especially when her hands bled from trying to spin yarn, but there are people who do that work every day to make fibers that later become the elegant dresses she loved so much.
Algo que detecté enseguida es que el cuento toca temas como la humildad, el orgullo, la desigualdad social y la transformación moral de las personas luego de experimentar en carne propia lo que viven los menos favorecidos. Solo a través del trabajo duro la princesa fue capaz de ver y valorar sus privilegios anteriores, pero también pudo comprender que esas personas a las que ella consideraba inferiores también tenían sueños, anhelos, familias e ilusiones, que se cansaban o enfermaban porque también son seres humanos, como ella, no objetos sin sensibilidad, también comprendió que todas las atenciones que antes recibía eran valiosas: la comida no se prepara sola, los platos no se sirven solos, y la ropa no aparece por arte de magia, lo comprendió en especial cuando sus manos sangraron al tratar de hilar, pero hay personas que hacen a diario esa labor para fabricar fibras que luego se convierten en los elegantes vestidos que a ella tanto le gustan.
Another lesson we can learn from all this is that life is full of twists and turns; sometimes we find ourselves on top, but we can fall flat on our faces, or vice versa. So we should never underestimate others because we need each other in this world, and because, in a way, how we treat others comes back to us. The princess trampled on, humiliated, and mistreated other people, regardless of their social standing, but when she was among the poorest, she experienced firsthand that the poorest are always the most vulnerable; they are the ones with the most to lose.
Otra reflexión que podemos sacar de todo esto es que la vida da muchas vueltas, a veces nos encontramos arriba pero podemos caer de bruces o viceversa, así que nunca debemos menospreciar a los demás porque en este mundo nos necesitamos los unos a los otros y porque de cierta forma la manera en que tratamos a los demás regresa a nosotros. La princesa pisoteaba, humillaba y maltrataba a las demás personas, incluso sin importar su rango social, pero cuando ella estuvo en el estrato más humilde experimentó en carne propia que los más pobres son siempre los más vulnerables, son los que tienen más que perder.

Muy interesante este cuento, porque nos invita a reforzar muchos valores que se han perdido. No importa el dinero y el poder que tenga una persona, eso no le da derecho de humillar a los demás, nunca se sabe cuando podemos caer.
Exactamente, por eso me encantó el cuento, ayuda a reforzar mucho estos valores perdidos, la vida es una rueda de la fortuna, así que más nos vale ser buenas personas.
