Hello, friends, as you already know, I am currently fascinated, immersed in the narrative universe of the Grimm brothers and their lesser-known stories, because when we talk about the famous Grimm brothers, stories like Cinderella or Snow White come to mind, but there are others that are much more interesting and that carry important and instructive messages.
Hola, amigos, como ustedes ya saben, actualmente estoy fascinada, sumergida en el universo narrativo de los hermanos Grimm y sus historias menos conocidas, porque a la hora de hablar de los famosos hermanos Grimm nos llegan a la mente historias como Cenicienta o Blancanieves, pero existen otras que son mucho más interesantes y que llevan consigo mensajes importantes y aleccionadores.
Overview/Resumen
A woman was fed up with her lazy daughter. No matter how much she beat her, she couldn't get the young woman to spin. However, one day, as she was passing by, the queen heard the girl's screams as her mother punished her. So she went to the window of the house and asked the mother what was happening and why she was punishing her daughter in that way, since her screams could be heard even outside. The mother was ashamed to admit to the queen that she had a lazy daughter, so she lied and said that the problem was that she couldn't get the girl away from the spinning wheel because she wanted to spin all the time and there wasn't enough money to buy enough wool. Then the queen replied that if she allowed her daughter to go to the palace with her, the girl could spin as much as she wanted since there was plenty of wool there. The mother agreed, and the girl went to the palace with the queen.
Una mujer estaba harta de su hija perezosa, por más que la moliera a golpes no podía hacer que la joven hilara, sin embargo un día en que iba pasando por allí, la reina escuchó los gritos de la joven mientras su madre la castigaba, así que se acercó a la ventana de la casa y le preguntó a la madre qué estaba ocurriendo y porqué castigaba a su hija de esa manera, ya que hasta afuera se oían sus gritos, la madre sentía vergüenza de admitir ante la reina que tenía una hija perezosa, así que le mintió y le dijo que el problema era que no podía sacar a la muchacha de la rueca porque ella quería hilar todo el tiempo y que no había dinero para comprar tanta lana, entonces la reina respondió que si le permitía a su hija ir a palacio con ella, la muchacha podría hilar cuanto pudiese ya que allá abundaba el material. La madre accedió y la chica se fue al palacio con la reina.
Once at the palace, the queen led the girl to a room filled with wool and asked her to spin it all and then begin spinning in two other rooms. If she fulfilled this promise, the queen would give her eldest son in marriage, for a hardworking young woman had her own work as a dowry. The girl didn't know what to do. How could she possibly spin so much in one night? So the next morning, the queen discovered that the girl hadn't done the work, but she excused herself, saying it was because she was homesick. The following day, the young woman was distraught, but through the window of her room, she saw three women arrive, each with a deformity: one had a lip so long it reached her neck, another had one very wide foot, and the third had a very thick thumb. The three women promised to do all the work, spinning the wool from the three rooms, but in return, she had to receive them on her wedding day without shame and introduce them as relatives.
Una vez en el palacio la reina condujo a la muchacha a una habitación llena de lana y le pidió que hilara todo y que al terminar comenzara con otras dos habitaciones. Si ella cumplía con lo acordado, la reina le entregaría a su hijo mayor en matrimonio porque una joven hacendosa tenía su propio trabajo como dote. La chica nos sabía que hacer, ¿Cómo podría hilar tanto en una noche? así que a la mañana siguiente la reina descubrió que la chica no había hecho el trabajo, pero ella se excusó diciendo que se debía a la nostalgia que sentía por su hogar. Al día siguiente la joven estaba desesperada, pero por la ventana de la habitación vio que llegaron tres mujeres, cada una con una deformidad: Una tenía el labio tan largo que le llegaba al cuello, la otra tenía uno de los pies muy ancho y la tercera tenía un pulgar muy grueso. La tres mujeres prometieron hacer todo el trabajo, hilar la lana de las tres habitaciones, pero a cambio ella debía recibirlas el día de su boda sin avergonzarse, y debía presentarlas como parientes.
The girl agreed, so the three spinners did their work, and in the end, the queen was so happy that she ordered the wedding to be officiated the next day. Then the three spinners arrived, and just as she had promised, the girl introduced them as her relatives. Then the prince (quite indiscreetly, I might add) asked each of them what caused their deformities. The one with the wide foot replied that it was from pressing the spindle pedal, the one with the long lip said that it was from licking the thread, and the one with the wide thumb said it was from twisting the thread. Because of all this, the prince looked at his wife and said, "I don't want you to end up like that, so you'll never have to spin again."
La muchacha aceptó, así que las tres hilanderas hicieron su trabajo, y al final la reina estaba tan feliz que mandó a oficiar la boda al día siguiente. Entonces llegaron las tres hilanderas, y tal como lo había prometido, la muchacha las presentó como sus parientes, entonces el príncipe, (con mucha indiscreción, por cierto) les preguntó a cada una a qué se debían sus deformidades. My Opinion/Mi Opinión
Some readers believe that this story contains a severe social critique, in this case regarding the expectations that everyone had about what a woman should be or how she should act; in this case, the role of a peasant woman was to spin, among other things, but honestly I don't think so, since precisely in those years that was exactly what everyone expected, even the girls; we cannot make comparisons with modern feminism.
Algunos lectores creen que este cuento contiene una severa crítica social, en este caso en lo que respecta a las expectativas que tenía todo el mundo sobre lo que debía ser o como debía actuar una mujer, en este caso el rol de una mujer campesina debía ser hilar, entre otras cosas, pero honestamente no lo creo, ya que precisamente en aquellos años era justamente eso lo que todos esperaban, incluso las chicas, no podemos hacer comparaciones con el feminismo moderno.
However, I do believe it contains a funny paradox about laziness; the girl avoided working, but it was precisely this that unleashed her mother's anger and in turn led her to the palace and to never having to work again in her life.
Sin embargo sí creo que contiene una divertida paradoja sobre la pereza, la chica evitaba trabajar, pero fue precisamente esto lo que desató la ira de su madre y a su vez la condujo al palacio y a no tener que trabajar más en su vida.
Something very important here is that the story makes us reflect on superficiality; it contains a great ambiguity. On the one hand, people admire the work of industrious people, they love to see them work and how productive they can be, but they hate the deformities that, in this case, are caused by hard work, even to the point where the spinners asked the girl not to be ashamed of them at the party. And in this way, the prince, who at first admired his wife's skills and her willingness to work, preferred that she never do it again for fear of seeing her with deformities.
Algo muy importante aquí es que el cuento nos hace reflexionar acerca de la superficialidad, contiene una gran ambigüedad, por un lado la gente admira el trabajo de las personas hacendosas, aman verlas trabajar y lo productivas que pueden llegar a ser, pero odian las deformidades que, en este caso son causadas por el trabajo duro, incluso hasta el punto en el que las hilanderas le pidieron a la muchacha que no se avergonzara de ellas en la fiesta, y de esta manera, el príncipe que en un inicio admiraba las habilidades de su esposa y su disposición al trabajo, prefirió que no lo hiciera nunca más por temor a verla con deformidades.
Another contrast or ambiguity we find in this story is Laziness and Hard Work, both shown from a different perspective than usual. On the one hand, laziness, although it can be bad, in this case, if combined with cunning, could yield good results, while hard work, if it becomes excessive, could be detrimental.
Otro contraste o ambigüedad que encontramos en este relato es la Pereza y el Trabajo duro, ambos mostrados desde un enfoque diferente al acostumbrado, por un lado la pereza, aunque puede ser mala, en este caso si se combina con astucia podría obtener buenos resultados, mientras que el trabajo duro, si se vuelve excesivo podría resultar perjudicial.
I really find the Grimm brothers' fairy tales fascinating, so I think we need to look far beyond Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Snow White 😃 Don't you agree?
De verdad que los cuentos de los hermanos Grimm me parecen interesantísimos, así que opino que hay que mirar mucho más allá de Cenicienta, Caperucita Roja y Blancanieves 😃 ¿No no lo creen?
