It's been a long time since I posted content in this community, but I'm back because I've been dying to share a review of a wonderful book that was sent to me as a gift from abroad, it's a great book that is part of a trilogy called "The Century" "The Winter of the World" is the second book of the trilogy and although I haven't really read the previous or the next one, I can tell you that the plot is very easy to understand, especially if you are familiar with the subject of the second world war and the holocaust.
Hace mucho tiempo que yo no publicaba contenido en esta comunidad, pero he regresado ya que muero por compartir la reseña de un maravilloso libro que me han enviado como regalo desde el extranjero, es un libro grandioso que forma parte de una trilogía llamada "The Century" "El Invierno del Mundo" es el segundo libro de la trilogía y aunque realmente no he leído ni el anterior ni el siguiente, les puedo decir que la trama es muy fácil de entender, sobre todo si eres asiduo al tema de la segunda guerra mundial y el holocausto.
What I like the most is that even though the book is very used, it looks like new because it comes in a protective box, which makes it very well preserved, it also has a protective cover with beautiful photographs and information from the author, Ken Follett.
Lo que más me gusta es que a pesar de que el libro está muy usado, se ve como nuevo porque viene dentro de una caja protectora, lo que hace que se conserve bastante bien, además tiene una cubierta protectora con hermosas fotografías y la información del autor, Ken Follett
Overview/Resumen
This book tells us about the lives of several families of different nationalities, some are aristocrats, some military and others working class, Germans, Russians, Americans and Spaniards, and how they cope in a world that little by little is filled with hatred, destruction and death due to the war, some of them must fight openly on the front lines, others must fight in a different way but at the same time make really difficult decisions, but most important of all is that with their actions little by step they step to write the new history of their respective countries.
Este libro nos habla de la vida de varias familias de diferentes nacionalidades, algunos son aristócratas, algunos militares y otros de clase obrera, alemanes, rusos, estadounidenses y españoles, y como se desenvuelven en un mundo que poco a poco se llena de odio, destrucción y muerte debido a la guerra, algunos de ellos deben luchar abiertamente en el frente de batalla, otros deben pelar de una forma distinta pero al mismo tiempo tomar decisiones realmente difíciles, pero lo más importante de todo es que con sus acciones poco a poco ayudan a escribir la nueva historia de sus respectivos países.
What I like most is that at the beginning of the reading, as it is very easy to get lost among the names and not know who the author is talking about, at the beginning we have a page with the names of the different families, which allows us to identify them immediately until we finally get used to them and identify them for ourselves.
Lo que más me gusta es que al inicio de la lectura, como es muy fácil perderse entre los nombres y no saber de quien nos haba el autor, al inicio tenemos una página con los nombres de las diferentes familias, lo que nos permite identificarlos de inmediato hasta que finalmente nos acostumbramos y los identificamos por nosotros mismos.
The author gradually immerses the reader in the story making him/her understand perfectly all the stages of the war, he gives you a glimpse inside the major world powers and how he thinks the great political personalities of history thought, such as President Roosevelt, Hitler, Churchill or Stalin, but at the same time we have the opportunity to see the reactions of the people, the proletariat, why they act as they act, how the war and fascism affect them, how the soldiers who have to fight on the front line are treated, and what is the role of each one in the society of those years, although it is evident that the war has the particularity of making everyone equal, the bombs when they fall and detonate do not distinguish between races, creeds or social classes, everyone can fight in their own way and from any place, anyone can be useful, a good spy, an excellent soldier, a great orator, someone who gives strength to his compatriots to keep on fighting.
El autor poco a poco va sumergiendo al lector en la historia haciendo que comprenda a la perfección todas las etapas de la guerra, te permite dar un vistazo al interior de las mayores potencias mundiales y de que forma él cree que pensaban las grandes personalidades políticas de la historia, como el presidente Roosevelt, Hitler, Churchill o Stalin, pero al mismo tiempo tenemos la oportunidad de ver las reacciones de la gente del pueblo, el proletariado, porque actúan como actúan, de que forma les afecta la guerra y el fascismo, como son tratados los soldados que deben luchar en el frente de batalla, y cual es el rol que cada quien debe cumplir en la sociedad de esos años, aunque se evidencia el hecho de que la guerra tiene la particularidad de igualarlos a todos, las bombas cuando caen y detonan no distinguen entre razas, credos o clases sociales, todos pueden luchar a su manera y desde cualquier lugar, cualquiera puede ser útil, un buen espía, un excelente soldado, un gran orador, alguien que le de fuerzas a sus compatriotas para seguir luchando.
I like the realism with which this novel was written, the author shows us all possible scenarios, for example the coldness with which the world rulers handle the war while soldiers and civilians pay the consequences of their disagreements, no matter if you were German, American, Russian, Spanish, Polish or Italian, you still had to face shortages, and in the case of Europeans or Asians they also had to face hunger, pain, fear, foreign occupation (with all its terrible consequences) and loss. We also see themes such as homosexuality and the way in which some characters have to deal with it, as well as the theme of social inequality and how radical ideas, whether moral, political or social, can affect people.
Me gusta el realismo con el que esta novela fue escrita, el autor nos muestra todos los panoramas posibles, por ejemplo la frialdad con la que los gobernantes mundiales manejan la guerra mientras que los soldados y civiles pagan las consecuencias de sus desacuerdos, no importa si eras alemán, estadounidense, ruso, español, polaco o Italiano, de todos modos debías enfrentarte a la escases, y en el caso de los europeos o asiáticos también debían enfrentarse al hambre, al dolor, al miedo, a la ocupación extranjera (con todas sus terribles consecuencias) y a la pérdida. También vemos temas como la homosexualidad y la forma en que algunos personajes deben afrontarla, de igual manera encontramos el tema de la desigualdad social o como las ideas radicales, bien sea morales, políticas o sociales pueden afectar a las personas.
I really like the role assumed by some of the women in this novel, because just as in real life, regardless of their social position, many of them took on very important roles that helped noble and important causes, even making difficult decisions that would make anyone's hair stand on end, I also loved the great evolution of some of the characters, such as Erick Von Ulrich, who after having belonged to the Hitler Youth and passionately defending Hitler's radical ideas, faced a harsh reality that opened his eyes in a raw way in the middle of the battle front.
Me gusta muchísimo el rol que asumen algunas mujeres en esta novela, pues tal como en la vida real, sin importar su posición social, muchas de ellas asumieron roles de mucha relevancia que ayudaron a causas nobles e importantes, tomando incluso decisiones difíciles que les pondrían los pelos de punta a cualquiera, también amé la gran evolución que tuvieron algunos personajes, como es el caso de Erick Von Ulrich, que luego de haber pertenecido a las juventudes hitlerianas y defender apasionadamente las ideas radicales de Hitler se enfrentó a una cruda realidad que le abrió los ojos de una forma cruda en pleno frente de batalla.
The only thing I really don't like is that the author sometimes gets lost in completely unnecessary and irrelevant descriptions, most of them of a sexual nature, which contribute absolutely nothing to the plot, on other occasions he describes the clothes of the characters or even the architectural style of some buildings. Don't get me wrong, I know that describing is a resource that the author uses to help the reader get into context and imagine the scenes in detail, but when they are excessive or unnecessary they generate the opposite effect, the scenes end up being long, boring and without context, especially when you are dying to see what happens in other scenarios where the author left the scene in suspense.
Lo único que realmente no me gusta es que el autor a veces se pierde en descripciones completamente innecesarias e irrelevantes, la mayoría de ellas de corte sexual, que no aportan absolutamente nada a la trama, en otras ocasiones describe la ropa de los personajes o hasta el estilo arquitectónico de algunos edificios. No me malinterpreten, sé que describir es un recurso que usa el autor para ayudar al lector a entrar en contexto e imaginar las escenas a detalle, pero cuando son excesivas o innecesarias generan el efecto contrario, las escenas terminan siendo largas, aburridas y sin contexto, sobre todo cuando mueres por ver lo que sucede en otros escenarios donde el autor dejó la escena en suspenso.
I'm dying to read the other two books, the first one "The Fall of Giants" (which is about the first world war and most of the characters in book two are children) and the last one "Edge of Eternity" (which talks about the cold war) Obviously it would have been better if I had read them in order but I didn't get the chance, However, I feel that, at least "The Winter of the World" can be read without having more context from the previous one, anyway some characters take care to provide you with the relevant information you need, through flash backs or important discoveries. It is definitely a book I recommend if you are a fan of historical novels.
Muero por leer los otros dos libros, el primero "La Caída de los Gigantes" (que trata sobre la primera guerra mundial y la mayoría de los personajes del libro dos son niños) y el último "El Umbral de la Eternidad" (el cual habla de la guerra fría) Evidentemente era mejor que yo los hubiese leído en orden pero no tuve la oportunidad, no obstante siento que, al menos "El Invierno del Mundo" se puede leer sin tener un mayor contexto del anterior, de todos modos algunos personajes se encargan de proporcionarte la información relevante que necesitas, a través de flash backs o descubrimientos importantes. Definitivamente es un libro que recomiendo si ustedes son asiduos a las novelas históricas.

I would really love to try this book. Yes,I do get you. Too much description or sexual contents is a total turn off.
It's not bad😂 but too much of confuses my brain sometimes and then about describing clothes and architecture,I get lost in the description sometimes.
Reading books is a really good way to chill but man,some authors just love to overemphasize on unnecessary things and sometimes it gets really annoying that you just have to skip that particular scene/part then if you're someone like me,you get a little pissed too because you wanted to drink in the book whole and not with some of it leaking🥲
Yes, exactly, too much description makes the reading tedious, if we are talking about a book about the second world war, I am not interested in the sexual encounters of the characters, or the type of architecture of the buildings, or the make of the cars or the upholstery inside or the style of clothes the characters are wearing, it is too unnecessary.

Parece una lectura bastante interesante. No había escuchado hablar de este autor antes, sin embargo, me gustan este tipo de libros que dentro del relato ficticio incluyen datos históricos. Parece por lo que dices que logra hacer esto bastante bien.
En cuanto a los detalles opino lo mismo que tú qué muchas veces son innecesarios, sobran bastante. Pero supongo que eso es característico de cada autor y hay muchos que simplemente dicen demasiado. Eso no está mal pero sí puede llegar a cansar.

Sí, a veces lo importante se pierde entre tantos detalles, por ejemplo quieres saber que sucedió en la batalla de las Ardenas, o si uno de los protagonistas logró llevar con éxito la invasión en Normandía, pero el autor se enfrasca en describir a detalle la habitación de un hotel estilo Art Deco con mobiliario barroco, pintado de color tal, mientras fulanita, vestida de seda, con pamela Chanel y zapatos de charol de marca tal bla bla bla 🙄 pero en términos generales el libro es buenísimo, de verdad me encanta
Me gustaría leerlo, el hecho de que tengas personajes de varias nacionalidades y ver su desarrollo sería fantástico,la caja que tiene para protegerse es hermosa. Que linda Reseña 💜
