It's been a long time since I've been so excited about buying a book.
Why so excited?
Well, I always get excited when I get a new book. But "How Do You Live?" is special.
For starters, I think this is the first time this book has been published in Spanish (There is a new English edition too). We are talking about a book written more than 80 years ago, a classic in Japan. Can you believe it?
Secondly, in my country, Peru, I wasn't able to find it in any bookstore or online store.
Finally, and a more meaningful reason: this novel has motivated Hayao Miyazaki to come out of retirement (once again) to make what could possible be his last film.
Hayal Miyazaki is, of course, the legendary director of such gems as Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and other animated classics.
The Japanese director cannot contain his love for this format. On several occasions he announced his retirement and always came back to make one more film. This time his imagination is set on capturing the characters of the novel "How do you live?" written by Yoshino Genzaburo in 1937.
What is the story about?
I just got my hands on the book and haven't had a chance to read it. From what little I have read about this story (I was actually looking for news about what could be Miyazaki's next film), this is what I understand is the main plot of the story.
In the novel, we follow the journey of "Koperu", a 15 year old boy who has just lost his father and goes to live with his uncle. Through his experiences at school, Koperu asks himself the questions that are eventually summed up in the title of the book. His uncle shares his wisdom and provides an interesting counterpoint through notes he leaves in a journal. Apparently, part of the answers are inspired by astronomy, the heavens and the stars, as Koperu takes that name because of the astronomer and mathematician Nicolaus Copernicus.
When will we be able to see this work of art in theaters?
Yes, I am absolutely sure it will be a work of art. What nobody is sure of is when we will be able to enjoy it. The production has not defined a delivery date. Studio Ghibli did the same thing with The Tale of Princess Kaguya and it took eight years to produce. "How Do You Live?" production launched in 2016, and the latest news - from December 2020 - reports that the film was halfway through.
How does the book look like?
A picture is worth a thousand words... except when it's a book, of course 😉. Still, this edition, as I already mentioned (the first in Spanish languag) is visually compelling as it is accompanied by contemplative illustrations by Kazu Wakita.

The edition is by Montena (Penguin Random House). Although it is not hardcover the binding is quite good.
Conclusion
I am currently reading a sample of Wolf in White Van by John Darnielle, leader of the band Mountain Goats. I don't know yet if I'll continue with it or dive into the world of How Do You Live?

Hacía tiempo que no me emocionaba tanto al comprar un libro.
¿Por qué tanta emoción?
Bueno, siempre me emociona cuando consigo uno, pero “¿Cómo vives?” es especial.
Para empezar, creo que es la primera vez que este libro se publica en español. Y estamos hablando de un libro escrito hace más de 80 años y que es un clásico en Japón. ¿Pueden creerlo?
En segundo lugar, en mi país, Perú, no lo he encontrado en ninguna librería ni tienda online.
Por último, y lo más significativo, es que esta novela ha motivo a Hayao Miyazaki a salir de su retiro (una vez más) para convertirla en lo que posiblemente sea su última obra.

El director japonés no puede contener su amor por este formato. En varios oportunidades anunció su retiro y siempre regresó para realizar un film más. Esta vez su imaginación está puesta en plasmar los personajes de la novela “¿Cómo vives?” escrita por Yoshino Genzaburo en 1937.
¿De qué trata la historia?
El libro recién lo tengo en mis manos y no he tenido la oportunidad de leerlo. Por lo poco que he leído sobre esta historia (en realidad producto de la búsqueda de noticias por la siguiente película de Miyazaki), esto es lo que entiendo es el argumento principal de la obra.
En la novela, seguimos el camino de “Koperu”, un joven de 15 años que acaba de perder a su padre y pasa a vivir con su tío. A través de sus vivencias en la escuela, Koperu se plantea las preguntas que finalmente se resumen en el título del libro. Su tío comparte su sabiduría y provee un interesante contrapunto a través de notas que va dejando en un diario. Al parecer, parte de las respuestas se inspiran en la astronomía, los cielos y las estrellas, pues Koperu toma ese nombre en referencia al astrónomo y matemático Nicolás Copérnico.
¿Cuándo podremos ver esta obra de arte en cines?
Sí, estoy absolutamente seguro que será una obra de arte. De lo que nadie está seguro es cuándo podremos disfrutarla. La producción no ha definido una fecha de entrega. Studio Ghibli hizo lo mismo hizo con El Cuento de la Princes Kaguya y tomó ocho años en producirse. “¿Cómo vives?” empezó a gestarse en el 2016 y las últimas noticias -de Diciembre 2020- dan cuenta que el film estaba a la mitad.
¿Cómo es libro?
Una imagen vale más que mil palabras… excepto cuando se trata de un libro, por supuesto 😉. Aún así, esta edición, como ya mencioné, la primera en idioma español, es visualmente muy agradable ya que viene acompañada de contemplativas ilustraciones de Kazu Wakita.
La edición es de Montena (Penguien Random House) y aunque no es de tapa dura, la encuadernación es bastante buena.
Conclusión
Actualmente estoy leyendo una muestra de Wolf in White Van de John Darnielle, líder de la banda Mountain Goats. Aún no sé si continuaré con ella o si me zambullo en el mundo de ¿Cómo Vives?
