Jesús David Curbelo es un gran poeta narrador, ensayista, crítico literario, traductor y profesor universitario; una de las voces contemporáneas imprescindibles y de alto reconocimiento dentro de Cuba. Nació el 29 de diciembre de 1965 en Camagüey, provincia de Cuba. Es Licenciado en Letras por la Universidad Central de Las Villas. Fue miembro de la Asociación Hermanos Saíz (AHS) hasta el año 2000 y, actualmente, es miembro de la Unión de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba (UNEAC). Ahora bien, "Cuestiones de agua y tierra" es una novela que, bajo la apariencia de una desenfadada y divertida narrativa de viaje, realiza un profundo análisis del alma humana y de la vida intelectual y moral en el siglo XXI.
La trama se presenta enmascarada como un libro de viajes que lleva al protagonista, el cual es el propio narrado y a su joven estudiante, Sacha, a recorrer gran parte de la bella y famosa Italia. En el transcurso podemos apreciar que no es solamente un viaje para apreciar la geografía sino para elevar el intelecto y el espíritu. El mismo propicia el diálogo y la reflexión sobre grandes temas culturales y problemas contemporáneos.
Al final la historia toma un giro inesperado, se recrea una guerra divertida de conquistas femeninas entre Sacha y el protagonista, la cual los conduce a la toma de decisiones en ocasiones violentas e incluso poner en tela de juicio la moral. Considero que el enamoramiento de los dos por Paola fue un gran detonante para llegar a tal situación.

El Protagonista (Narrador): Es el personaje principal, un escritor o artista cubano, reflexivo e irónico. Guía de Sacha, pero también se ve envuelto en las pasiones humanas.
Sacha: El estudiante del protagonista. Joven, inteligente, con grandes ideas y una fuerza emprendedora, a veces contrapunto de la visión más madura o cínica del narrador.
Paola: Una mujer italiana, rubia y bella, que es el objeto de deseo y la causa del conflicto amoroso-sexual entre el protagonista y Sacha.
La novela profundiza en la complejidad de los sentimientos humanos, que son caracterizados a veces como crueles y primarios, destacando el erotismo, el amor y la competencia masculina.
