Today I bring you the novel Las últimas vacas van a morir (The Last Cows Are Going to Die) by Ulises Rodríguez Febles, published by Ediciones Unión in 2021. It's worth noting, however, that this novel received prior recognition; in 2017 it won the Guillermo Vidal Novel Prize, which initiated the publication process with Ediciones Unión. Therefore, 2021 is the year of publication of the edition that circulated in Cuba.
Ulises Rodríguez Febles was born in Cárdenas, Matanzas, on August 30, 1968. He is a Cuban playwright, researcher, and screenwriter. He holds a degree in Spanish and Literature and a diploma in Children's Theater and Puppetry from the ISA (Higher Institute of Art). He directs the House of Scenic Memory, the place where the national scenic memory of Matanzas is preserved, protected and disseminated.
The novel is described as a "novel about the Cuban agrarian world" that not only idealizes the countryside but also delves into the harshest problems of rural life.
The plot unfolds mostly within a livestock breeding program in Cuba, a symbolic and important space where the country's most radical agrarian reforms were implemented.
The novel focuses on the crisis and decline of the Cuban agricultural world, characterized by the severe and unstoppable decrease in livestock numbers and the frustration of major social projects undertaken in the countryside. The main character is Francisco de la Cal, an ex-convict whose life story spans more than sixty years of Cuban rural history. His body begins to mutate as cows die around him, a powerful metaphor for environmental devastation and individual trauma. Similarly, a wide variety of characters with rural origins and urban lives are presented who have been reinserted into the countryside out of necessity, reflecting the social complexity and traumas of the total devastation of the land.
This work was highly significant and well-received because it delves into the collective and individual memory of those who resisted surrendering their lands and those of their descendants, exploring how the land has shaped their ancestral spirit and how destruction has led to a chaotic destiny.
After reading it, I noticed how the story blends magical realism, similar to the work of Alejo Carpentier. In Carpentier's work, the author starts from a real existence and doesn't need to resort to fantastical inventions, but rather relies on history—precisely what Ulises Rodríguez Febles does.

El día de de hoy les traigo la novela Las últimas vacas van a morir de Ulises Rodríguez Febles, la misma fue publicada por Ediciones Unión en el año 2021. Aunque es correcto recalcar que esta fue reconocida previamente, en el año 2017 obtuvo el Premio Guillermo Vidal de Novela, lo que inició el proceso de publicación con Ediciones Unión. Por lo tanto, 2021 es el año de publicación de la edición que circuló en Cuba.
Ulises Rodríguez Febles, nació en Cárdenas, Matanzas el 30 de agosto de 1968. Es un dramaturgo, investigador y guionista cubano. Licenciado en Español y Literatura. Diplomado en Teatro para niños y de Títeres en el ISA. Dirige la Casa de la Memoria Escénica, el lugar donde se conserva, protege y difunde la memoria escénica matancera nacional.
La novela es descrita como una "novela sobre el universo agrario cubano" que, no solamente se centra en idealizar el campo, sino que además se adentra en las problemáticas más duras de la realidad rural.
La trama se desarrolla en su mayoría en un plan genético pecuario en Cuba, un espacio simbólico e importante donde se ejecutaron los procesos agrarios más radicales del país.
La novela se centra en la crisis y la decadencia del mundo agrario cubano, caracterizada por la severa e imparable disminución de la masa ganadera y la frustración de grandes proyectos sociales emprendidos en el campo. El personaje principal es Francisco de la Cal, un exconvicto por cuya biografía transcurren más de sesenta años de la historia rural cubana. Su cuerpo empieza a mutar a medida que las vacas mueren a su alrededor, una poderosa metáfora de la devastación del entorno y el trauma individual, igualmente se presenta una gran variedad de personajes on orígenes rurales y vidas urbanas que se han reinsertado en el campo por necesidad, reflejando la complejidad social y los traumas de la devastación total de la tierra.
Esta obra tuvo una gran importancia y aceptación ya que indaga en la memoria colectiva e individual de aquellos que se resistieron a entregar sus tierras y la de sus descendientes, explorando cómo la tierra ha forjado su espíritu ancestral y cómo la destrucciòn ha provocado un destino caótico.
Luego de su lectura pude percatarme como en la historia se mezcla lo real maravilloso como en la obra de Alejo Carpentier, ya que en este el autor parte de una existencia real y que el mismo no tiene que acudir a invenciones fantásticas, sino que debe apoyarse en la historia, justamente lo que realiza Ulises Rodríguez Febles.
