The police thriller and horror genre has always been a favorite of mine, both in literature and in film and television; I love the process of investigation, suspicion and the search for the truth. I had been a while without having that strange feeling of tension, like I had an emptiness in my stomach eating away at me, until I got this book, and I really don't know why I hadn't read anything from this saga yet. I think we all know about Hannibal Lecter, after Anthony Hopkins' performance, there is a mental light bulb that gives you an image about him playing said role. But few know about the books in this story, and I'm just now giving myself the chance. It's taken me a while, but my fingers are shaking with every page, so I want to tell you about it.
Thomas Harris is the author of this work entitled: "Red Dragon", first published in 1981. It is undoubtedly a milestone in the literary genre of police thrillers and after some research, I know it is widely recognized as one of the best examples of this type of narrative. Personally I'm a fan of John Katzenbach for this type of story, and John Grisham who has more weight between suspense and legal sustenance, but both seem to me to work the genre wonderfully, and probably don't even resonate among the best, so it seems almost a sin on my part not to have read Harris from before. Undoubtedly through his immersive plot and fascinating protagonist, Harris manages to captivate readers and keep them in suspense until the very last page.
Will Graham, is the main character of this story, a former FBI agent known for his ability to get into the minds of serial killers and who is forced to return to service when a new killer, nicknamed "Red Dragon", begins to spread panic in society. The tooth fairy, nickname within the play, selects his victims meticulously and carries out his crimes in a brutal way, leaving horror in his wake. Our officer must delve into the killer's mind to find him in order to avoid more victims.
Without a doubt it is Will who grabs me from the start with his personality and way of thinking. His character's narrative is engaging and he has such real internal dialogues that give me the urge to give him a hug or some supportive pats. Harris presents a complex and tormented protagonist whose ability to empathize with serial killers has pushed him over the edge in the past, and much more so in the present. After Detective Crawford seeks his help, deeming him the best in his field, he begins a struggle with his own sanity as he attempts to immerse himself in the mind of the Red Dragon. In my opinion the construction of his character is amazing beyond belief, it transcends fiction denoting the sublime work of the writer and gives the whole reason for the success of the novel.
The exploration of psychology and how he manages to convey his inner fears and challenges in an exceptional way, allows the reader to understand the difficulties and dilemmas Graham faces. The complement of the characters and their way of thinking leaving the essence in each chapter makes the reading an enjoyable agony, no doubt his secondary construction is memorable and complex, which adds depth to the plot and makes the story even more fascinating.
Not since Stephen King have I read an author who so enveloped me with the quality of his writing, and yes, I am a huge King fan. But Thomas Harris has a detailed and vivid style that creates a tense and oppressive atmosphere on every page, making me feel disgusted and in awe. His descriptions are so realistic that at times I shook my head trying to erase the image that forced its way into my inner self, and gasped for air looking for a reason to stop.
As for the plot, "Red Dragon" is a real labyrinth of twists and surprises, I really don't want to give spoilers, although I'm sure the vast majority have seen the movie, here comes the readers' favorite hackneyed phrase: the book is better than the movie. Throughout the reading Harris manages to keep the suspense throughout the narrative, leading everyone on a path of constant tension. The hunt for the Red Dragon or Tooth Fairy is a race against the clock full of action and excitement, which makes you hold your breath at times. The mix of emotions you get to feel are insane, and you can despise some characters so much but be in awe of their way of thinking, it's disgusting.
I want to note that the plot also deals with dark and disturbing themes, such as the nature of evil and obsession, which adds depth and complexity to the work, but is definitely not for all audiences. Aggression, murder, morbidity, sadism, mental problems, abuse and so on are the entire result of this play, but one that does not leave you indifferent.
Red Dragon is a work that has left an indelible mark on me, it has been filed as one of my favorites in the literary genre of police thrillers and I will certainly take a few days to let the end settle and be able to continue with the second: The Silence of the Lambs.

Creo que todos sabemos sobre Hannibal Lecter, después de la interpretación de Anthony Hopkins, hay una bombilla mental que te da una imagen sobre él haciendo dicho papel. Pero pocos saben sobre los libros de esta historia, y yo recién estoy dándome la oportunidad. Me he tardado, pero los dedos me tiemblan con cada página, así que quiero hablarles de ello.

En cuanto a la trama, "El dragón rojo" es un verdadero laberinto de giros y sorpresas, realmente no quiero dar spoilers, aunque seguro la gran mayoría ha visto la película, aquí viene la frase trillada favorito de los lectores: el libro es mejor que la película. En toda la lectura Harris logra mantener el suspenso a lo largo de la narrativa, llevando a todos en un camino de tensión constante. La cacería del Dragón Rojo o Hada de los dientes es en una carrera contrarreloj llena de acción y emoción, lo que te hace aguantar la respiración en ocasiones. La mezcla de emociones que logras sentir son insanas, y puedes despreciar tanto a algunos personajes pero sentirte maravillado por su forma de pensar, que es repugnante.
Quiero acotar que la trama también aborda temas oscuros y perturbadores, como la naturaleza del mal y la obsesión, lo que añade profundidad y complejidad a la obra, pero que en definitiva no es para todo público. Agresión, asesinato, morbo, sadismo, problemas mentales, abuso y demás son el entero resultado de esta obra, pero que no te deja indiferente.
El dragón rojo es una obra que me ha dejado una huella indeleble, se ha archivado como una de mis favoritas en el género literario de los thrillers policiales y sin duda me tomaré unos días para dejar asentar el final y poder proseguir con el segundo: El silencio de los corderos.
