Hola amigos de la comunidad de BookClub, espero se encuentren bien el día de hoy. Se ha vuelto costumbre que busque libros y cuentos de diferentes autores de habla hispana, entre ellos están los de Guadalupe Dueñas y Amparo Dávila quienes fueron escritoras reconocidas en sus tiempos por crear obras literarias que marcaron la literatura y la forma de expresar a través de la escritura diferentes cuentos e historias desde sus experiencias y su inspiración. El día de hoy quiero hablarles sobre un audiolibro que se llama La Cautiva del escritor mexicano José Emilio Pacheco, una historia que es intrigante y que toca temas de la realidad, religión y los miedos del ser humano. Así que los invito a leer mi reseña 🤐.
Hello friends of the BookClub community, I hope you are well today. It has become customary for me to look for books and stories from different Spanish-speaking authors, among them are those of Guadalupe Dueñas and Amparo Dávila who were writers recognized in their time for creating literary works that marked literature and the way of expressing through writing different stories and tales from their experiences and inspiration. Today I want to talk about an audiobook called La Cautiva by Mexican writer José Emilio Pacheco, a story that is intriguing and touches on issues of reality, religion and human fears. So I invite you to read my review 🤐.
La historia comienza contándonos un hecho que ocurrió en un pueblo mexicano en el año 1934 donde se generó un fuerte sismo que asombro y dejó muy asustados a sus habitantes entre ellos a tres niños que son los protagonistas de esta historia. Cómo era algo que no solía suceder mucho, el sismo causó un revuelo de comentarios entre las personas y además como era muy común para esos tiempos lo atribuyeron a algún mensaje enviado por Dios ya que en ese pueblo todos eran muy creyentes. Las personas comentaban que podría suceder de nuevo y eso les generaba estar en un constante estado de zozobra y buscaban la manera de ir a la iglesia a escuchar la palabra del señor para tratar de entender lo que había sucedido y que debían de aprender como seres humanos sobre esta situación.
The story begins by telling us about an event that occurred in a Mexican town in the year 1934, where a strong earthquake caused great astonishment and frightened its inhabitants, among them three children who are the main characters of this story. As it was something that did not happen very often, the earthquake caused a commotion of comments among the people and also as it was very common for those times they attributed it to a message sent by God since in that town they were all very believers. People commented that it could happen again and that generated a constant state of anxiety and they looked for ways to go to church to listen to the word of the Lord to try to understand what had happened and what they should learn as human beings about this situation.
Pero aquellos tres niños quienes eran mejores amigos en el pueblo no podían parar de hacerse preguntas y de querer encontrar respuestas a pesar de que también estaban aterrorizados. La curiosidad de la edad los empujó a una noche ir hacia un templo que había resultado bastante afectado por el sismo y dónde se escuchaban historias de que había sido construido con el fin de ejercer dominio ante los productores de trigo, luego fue utilizado para ser una especie de cuartel. Por su importancia estratégica fue bombardeado en los años revolucionarios y la guerra cristera condujo a su abandono definitivo en 1929. A nadie le agradaba pasar cerca de él: “Allí espantan”, decían. Pero este era uno de los lugares donde los tres niños solían jugar a pesar del aspecto del lugar y de las historias que algunas personas contaban sobre él.
But those three children who were best friends in the village could not stop asking questions and wanting to find answers even though they were also terrified. The curiosity of age pushed them one night to go to a temple that had been badly affected by the earthquake and where they heard stories that it had been built in order to exercise dominion over the wheat producers, then it was used to be a kind of barracks. Due to its strategic importance it was bombed during the revolutionary years and the Cristero War led to its definitive abandonment in 1929. Nobody liked to pass near it: "They scare people there", they said. But this was one of the places where the three children used to play despite the appearance of the place and the stories that some people told about it.
En una noche los tres niños abandonan sus hogares para llegar al templo y buscar alguna evidencia de las historias contadas, se fueron escabullendo en el lugar el cual estaba esa noche lluviosa más tenebroso que nunca y con una linterna fueron caminando por el lugar hasta que uno de los tres se va corriendo y lo escuchan gritar, cuando los otros dos se acercan el niño esta señalando lo que acaba de ver con un miedo profundo en sus ojos: Hay una celda y dentro parece estar un cuerpo de mujer vestida con una tunica y amarrada a una silla, no podían creer lo que sus ojos estaban mirando, el niño que encontró el cuerpo salió huyendo del lugar mientras los otros dos trataban de entender la situación. ¿Había una mujer en el lugar y cómo es que nadie se había enterado de ello? Se preguntaban los dos niños, hasta que uno tomó la iniciativa y se atrevió a acercarse al cuerpo de la mujer.
One night the three children leave their homes to get to the temple and look for some evidence of the stories told, they were sneaking in the place which was that rainy night darker than ever and with a flashlight were walking around the place until one of the three runs away and they hear him scream, when the other two approach the boy is pointing to what he just saw with a deep fear in his eyes: There is a cell and inside seems to be a woman's body dressed in a tunic and tied to a chair, they could not believe what their eyes were looking at, the boy who found the body ran away from the place while the other two were trying to understand the situation. Was there a woman in the place and how come no one had found out about it? The two children wondered, until one took the initiative and dared to approach the woman's body.
Al llegar hasta su cuerpo pudo observar que estaba el esqueleto de lo que había sido una mujer y por instinto tocó su cabeza y el cuerpo de inmediato se deshizo después de estar tantos años en aquel temible lugar. Al verse en aquella situación ambos niños salieron huyendo y regresaron al pueblo junto a sus padres que los estaban buscando con angustia, el niño que había regresado de primero ya le habia contado a todos lo que encontraron en aquel lugar, el cadáver de una mujer amarrado a una silla. Todos se sorprendieron y se hacían preguntas acerca de como había sido posible que algo así le hubieran hecho a una mujer pero lo que no sabían era la historia detrás de el encierro de esta misteriosa mujer.
When he reached her body he could see the skeleton of what had been a woman and instinctively touched her head and the body immediately fell apart after so many years in that dreadful place. Upon seeing themselves in that situation both children fled and returned to town with their parents who were looking for them with anguish, the boy who had returned first had already told everyone what they found in that place, ** the body of a woman tied to a chair.** Everyone was surprised and asked questions about how it had been possible that something like that had been done to a woman but what they did not know was the story behind the confinement of this mysterious woman.
Aquella mujer había sido castigada por haber cometido el crimen de tener una relación clandestina con un monje y además arrojar en un pozo a un bebé que tuvo producto de esta relación. La mujer básicamente fue encerrada y murió de hambre, sed y de angustia, una historia bastante cruel que me sorprendió mucho porque no me esperaba que eso era lo que estaba detrás de toda esta historia, se puede ver que la mujer recibió un fuerte castigo por sus acciones pero uno de los niños al preguntarle al padre de la iglesia del pueblo que había sucedido con el monje, este le contesta que simplemente fue enviado a Filipina y eso fue todo lo que hicieron ante este hecho.
That woman had been punished for having committed the crime of having a clandestine relationship with a monk and also throwing a baby she had as a result of this relationship into a well. The woman was basically locked up and died of hunger, thirst and anguish, a very cruel story that surprised me a lot because I did not expect that this was what was behind the whole story, you can see that the woman received a strong punishment for her actions but one of the children asked the father of the village church what had happened to the monk, he replied that he was simply sent to the Philippines and that was all they did to this fact.
Podemos ver que en aquellos tiempos podía ser una mujer castigada y juzgada de forma muy cruel y sin ninguna piedad, sobre todo si se trataba de alguna relación clandestina o infidelidad, dónde no tenían ningún tipo de derecho o defensa, los niños al final continuaron sus vidas y crecieron; aunque nunca más volvieron a ser amigos quedó el recuerdo de esa noche espeluznante y ese terrible hecho ocurrido a una mujer que no merecía tal maltrato. Las religiones algunas veces pueden segar a las personas y volverlas fanáticas de tal forma que se creen superiores y con derechos de decidir como deberían actuar o vivir los demás aún cuando sus propias vidas estan llenas de errores y de malas intenciones.
We can see that in those times a woman could be punished and judged in a very cruel and merciless way, especially if it was a clandestine relationship or infidelity, where they had no rights or defense, the children eventually continued their lives and grew up; although they were never friends again, the memory of that frightening night and that terrible event happened to a woman who did not deserve such mistreatment remained. Religions can sometimes mow people down and turn them into fanatics in such a way that they believe they are superior and have the right to decide how others should act or live even when their own lives are full of mistakes and bad intentions.
Sin duda La Cautiva es una historia que José Emilio Pacheco narro de una forma que pudieras sentir la atmósfera de miedo y terror, dentro de la vida de estos tres niños quienes fueron los protagonistas y que descubrieron de forma desafortunada el cadáver de esta mujer revelando así el hecho de que fue torturada y que falleció por un simple amorío donde ella fue la que resultó recibiendo el castigo más severo y su amante el monje siendo liberado en otro país como si nada. La narración te mantiene cautivado y genera el mismo temor que sienten los protagonistas y la verdad es que me gustó la historia aunque me pareció muy injusta pero de que fue intrigante si lo fue, siento que estás cosas sucedían más de lo que hemos escuchado en las historias de nuestros abuelos o incluso en los secretos que se escuchan de los habitantes de cada lugar. Los invito a buscar esta historia y leerla o escuchar el audiolibro por si mismos, es una experiencia que te deja reflexionando y que te muestra el lado oscuro de los seres humanos y los misterios que suceden en la vida.
Without a doubt La Cautiva is a story that José Emilio Pacheco narrated in a way that you could feel the atmosphere of fear and terror, within the life of these three children who were the protagonists and who discovered in an unfortunate way the corpse of this woman revealing the fact that she was tortured and that she died for a simple love affair where she was the one who received the most severe punishment and her lover the monk was released in another country as if nothing happened. The narration keeps you captivated and generates the same fear that the protagonists feel and the truth is that I liked the story although I found it very unfair but it was intriguing if it was, I feel that these things happened more than what we have heard in the stories of our grandparents or even in the secrets that are heard from the inhabitants of each place. I invite you to look for this story and read it or listen to the audiobook for yourself, it is an experience that leaves you reflecting and shows you the dark side of human beings and the mysteries that happen in life.
