On a day like today, May 16, two great writers were born, the Venezuelan Arturo Uslar Pietri and the Mexican Juan Rulfo; both are on the list of my favorite authors, although their styles are very different, in this post I wanted to make a humble review of the latter's novel Pedro Páramo.
I remember that the first time I read this book I was in high school studying Spanish, I read it in a hurry and, like many of the novels that one reads during their youth, it was a very superficial reading. A few months ago I downloaded it from the web and read it again, this time on my Kindle and obviously in digital format, easily available on the internet and the version I downloaded was from the digital publisher Titivillus and in ePub format.
Un día como hoy, 16 de mayo, nacieron dos grandes escritores, el venezolano Arturo Uslar Piertri y el mexicano Juan Rulfo; ambos están en la lista de mis autores favoritos, aunque sus estilos son muy diferentes, en este post he querido hacer una humilde reseña de la novela del segundo, llamada Pedro Páramo.
Recuerdo bien que la primera vez que llegó a mi esta obra fue en el bachillerato cuando cursaba la materia castellano, la leí muy epresurado y, como muchas de las novelas que uno leía en la juventud, fue una lectura muy superfiial. Hace unos meses la bajé de la web y la volví a leer, esta vez en mi Kindle y obviemente en formato digital, se consigue fácilmente en internet y la versión que yo descargué es de la editorial digital Titivillus y en formato ePub.
Pedro Páramo is a short novel, but it not easy to read, however, if you read it carefully you will be able to immerse yourself in that world of the author where the real is confused with the ghostly, with the memory and the dream of a formidable and very original story that takes place in a mythical town called Comala where time is constantly broken between two lives, the life of Juan Preciado who is looking for his father Pedro Páramo and the latter who is a despised cacique who has become the owner of the whole city.
Pedro Páramo es una novela corta, pero nada fácil de leer, sin embrago, si uno la lee con cuidado logrará sumergirse en ese mundo del autor donde lo real se confunde con lo fantasmal, con el recuerdo y el ensueño de una formidable y muy original historia que se lleva a cabo en un mítico pueblo llamado Comala, allí el tiempo se rompe constantemente entre dos vidas, una la de Juan Preciado que busca a su padre Pedro Páramo y la segunda la de este último quien es un despiado cacique que se ha hecho dueño de toda la ciudad.
The novel is written using a technique called seasonal drama, since in the book time passes in a non-linear manner. Another interesting thing is that Pedro Páramo is like two novels in one, the story of the son and the one of the father. When one reads this novel and pays attention, there comes a time when the reader is able to enter those two worlds, feeling a sensation of remoteness, calm and at the same time of violence, typical of those Mexican lands of the mid-ninth century and early twentieth century that does not differ much from the environment of other Latin American towns or cities.
La novela está escrita usando una técnica llamada drama de estaciones, ya que en la obra el tiempo transcurre de forma no lineal, otra cosa interesante es que Pedro Páramo son como dos novelas en una, la del hijo y la del padre. Cuando uno lee esta novela y se concentra totalmente en ella, llega un momento en que entramos en esos dos mundos y se llega a sentir una sensación de lejanía, de calma y a la vez de violencia, típico de aquellas tierras mexicanas de medidos del siglo IX y principios del XX y que no se diferencia mucho del ambiente de otros pueblo o ciudades latinoamericanas.
Reading this novel again, after so many years, caused me great satisfaction, I really enjoyed reading it and I recommend it completely, as I said before, the novel is short, but it must be read carefully, also, it is one of the great works From Hispanic American literature, Rulfo creates this fascinating world where the past is mixed with the present, where stories of desire and past are woven, of unreal visions of the deceased that tell their lives and share them with the living.
Leer de nuevo esta novela, después de tantos años, me causó una gran satisfacción, disfruté muchísimo leyendola y la recomiendo por completo, como dije anteriormente la novela es corta, pero debe leerse con cuidado, además, por algo es una de las grandes obras de la literatura hispanoamericana, Rulfo nos crea este mundo tan fascinate donde se mezcla el pasado con el presente, donde se tejen historias de deseo y pasado, de visiones irreales y difuntos que cuentan su vida y la comparten con los vivos.
I invite everyone to read this novel, I read it outdoors and this helped me get into that imaginary town of Comala, while I was reading it there were a few hours that I felt the heat of my city and I related it to the heat of the novel, and even the wind made me feel as if I were in those arid Mexican lands, and ... well, only the ghosts were missing, although who knows.
Invito a todos a leer esta novela, yo la leí al aire libre y esto me ayudó a meterme en ese pueblo imaginario de Comala, mientras la leía hubo unas horas que sentí calor y lo relacioné con la canícula de la novela, palabra que significa periodo de mucho calor, y hasta el viento que me llegaba me hizo sentir como si estuviera realmente en esas tierras áridas mexicanas, y ... bueno solo faltaron los fantasmas, aunque quien sabe.
