I decided to take up the subject of love on the casus of Sergiusz Piasecki's Lover of the Great Bear. The title itself suggests some connection with the element / derivative of love. And the content itself is full of different plots related to the feeling between a woman and a man. It is also worth mentioning the contexts of Piasecki's book – it is a novel about the life of smugglers on the Polish-Soviet border in the first half of the 1920s.
Zdecydowałem się podjąć temat miłości na przykładzie Kochanka Wielkiej Niedźwiedzicy Sergiusza Piaseckiego. Sam tytuł już sugeruje jakieś powiązanie z elementem/pochodną miłości. A sama treść pełna jest różnych wątków związanych z uczuciem pomiędzy kobietą, a mężczyzną. Warto wspomnieć przy okazji o kontekstach książki Piaseckiego – jest to powieść o życiu przemytników na granicy polsko-radzieckiej w pierwszej połowie lat 20. XX wieku.
The action is extremely dynamic, the dialogues are concise. The novel is full of situational comedy and funny gags. The smuggling community is a hard social fabric, they are loyal in their relations with each other and the word is very important to them. They realize that the details can determine the fate of a comrade. The prisons of that time are not cozy flatlets, they are full of lice and the prisoners are hungry. At first glance, the realism of the described scene is striking. The whole sense of the novel seems to lie beneath the surface, it is in vain to look for depth. The reader gets megadoses of a rigorous view 100 years ago. Jungle. You have to form your own opinion about the legitimacy of the actions taken by smugglers. I think that the plot is so arranged that the reader affirms the attitude of the characters of the book and befriends them, is an observer of the scenes, while cheering for the smugglers. I think that everyone feels to some extent an attraction to freedom, breaking out of the existing rules, rebellion against conformity life. And these contrabandists are just like that - they created their world, their order, they created a utopia that allows them to live with dignity. I think to myself that such smugglers, who play with death on a daily basis, are an extremely dangerous fabric in society. A man with no fear is simply problematic and it is difficult to grade the level of empathy towards such an individual. Some people hate him, others admire / love him. They hate… for his riotous way of life, for robbing government, for breaking the law and other similar cliche; the bourgeoisie does not like competition in the category of theft, especially if they are robbed. However, I think most people admire those daredevils who may lose their lives the next day or go to prison.
Akcja jest niezwykle dynamiczna, dialogi treściwe. Powieść pełna jest komizmu sytuacyjnego i zabawnych gagów. Społeczność przemytników jest twardą tkanką społeczną, w stosunkach między sobą są lojalni i słowo wypowiedziane jest dla nich bardzo ważne. Zdają sobie sprawę, że detale mogą zaważyć o losie kolegi z paczki. Ówczesne więzienia nie są przytulnymi norkami, roi się tam od wszy, osadzeni cierpią głód. Na pierwszy rzut oka uderza realizm opisywanych wydarzeń. Cały sens powieści zdaje się leżeć pod powierzchnią, próżno szukać tu głębi. Czytelnik dostaje końskie dawki rygorystycznego krajobrazu sprzed 100 lat. Dżungla. Trzeba samemu wyrobić sobie zdanie na temat zasadności podejmowanych przez przemytników działań. Myślę, że akcja utworu jest tak ułożona, że czytelnik afirmuje postawę bohaterów książki i zaprzyjaźnia się z nimi, jest obserwatorem wydarzeń, jednocześnie kibicując przemytnikom. Być może tylko ja mam takie odczucie – nie wiem, ale myślę, że każdy odczuwa w pewnym stopniu pociąg do wolności, wyłamania się z obowiązujących schematów, buntu przeciwko konformistycznemu życiu. I ci przemytnicy właśnie tacy są – wykreowali swój świat, swój porządek, stworzyli utopię, która pozwala im godnie żyć. Myślę sobie, że tacy przemytnicy, którzy na co dzień igrają ze śmiercią są nadzwyczaj groźną tkanką w społeczeństwie. Człowiek, w którym nie ma strachu, jest po prostu niewygodny i ciężko wystopniować poziom empatii do takiego osobnika. Jedni go nienawidzą, inni podziwiają, kochają. Nienawidzą… za hulaszczy sposób życia, za okradanie władzy, za łamanie prawa i inne podobne frazesy; cała ta burżuazja nie lubi konkurencji w kategorii złodziejstwa, zwłaszcza jeśli to oni są okradani. Myślę, że jednak większość ludzi podziwia tych śmiałków, którzy być może kolejnego dnia stracą swoje życie lub trafią do więzienia.
According to the subject of love, this – perhaps – is the key to such a lush social and emotional life of the smugglers. Smugglers locate their feelings for the fair sex in a very chaotic manner. Perhaps, just like others are attracted to a risky lifestyle - this is how they feel an inner longing for home, family, stability? One of them does not even mind his profession, because he has a family. However, this is probably an exception in this group. The main character often mentions the Ursa Major, which his friend showed him at the beginning of his smuggling life. Ursa Major always showed him the way if he got lost. She also showed him the way when he was returning to the border when he escaped from the train that was taking him to serve his sentence. It seems that the only pure love he has is the love for Ursa Major. I can wholeheartedly recommend Sergiusz Piasecki's book entitled The Lover of the Great Bear. It is primarily a novel about freedom, solidarity and the disinterested friendship of outcasts of society. It is a story about people who were chewed by society and spat out like tasteless chewing gum. It is also a novel about love, difficult love. The idealized one that cannot be touched, but only delighted. And the one that is close, if we just look around, it is present in all its symptoms. I think that with both, man can flourish.
Nawiązując do tematu, w tym – być może – leży klucz do tak bujnego życia towarzyskiego i uczuciowego przemytników. Przemytnicy lokują swoje uczucia do płci pięknej bardzo chaotycznie. Być może tak jak innych pociąga ryzykancki styl życia – tak oni czują wewnętrzną tęsknotę za domem, rodziną, stabilnością? Jednemu z nich nawet wykonywany zawód nie przeszkadza, bo ma rodzinę. Aczkolwiek to chyba wyjątek w tej grupie. Główny bohater często przypomina sobie o Wielkiej Niedźwiedzicy, którą pokazał mu jego przyjaciel na początku życia przemytniczego. Wielka Niedźwiedzica zawsze wskazywała mu drogę jeśli zabłądził. Wskazywała mu też drogę jak wracał na granicę gdy uciekł z pociągu wiozącego go na odbywanie kary. Zdaje się, że jedyną czystą miłością darzy Wielką Niedźwiedzicę. Książkę Sergiusza Piaseckiego pod tytułem Kochanek Wielkiej Niedźwiedzicy z całego serca mogę polecić. To przede wszystkim powieść o wolności, solidarności i bezinteresownej przyjaźni wyrzutków społeczeństwa. Ludzi, których częstokroć społeczeństwo przeżuło i wypluło niczym pozbawioną już smaku gumę do żucia. To także powieść o miłości, trudnej miłości. Tej wyidealizowanej, której nie można dotknąć, a jedynie zachwycać się nią. Oraz tej, która jest blisko, jeśli tylko się rozejrzymy, jest obecna we wszystkich jej zwiastunach. Myślę, że przy jednej i drugiej człowiek może rozkwitać.
