I read the synopsis and while I think it sounds interesting (to speak out or not), it also sounds harrowing. 1985 is a world away, pre-internet, I had not yet lived in a house with central heating. The Magdalene Laundries were notorious for their mistreatment of women and girls.

That is really the central tenant of the tale. It is never really articulated literally in the prose, but the threat is there, ever present, between the lines in so many paragraphs.
