El mismo día que terminé de leer once minutos —y a causa de los cortes de luz cada vez más frecuentes en el país— empecé a leer El Alquimista, del mismo autor. Era un libro que había visto mil veces pero que jamás me atrajo lo suficiente para leerlo.
Esta vez me bastaron cuatro horas para terminarlo, sí... Jamás había leído un libro en una sentada, pero en vista de que el corte eléctrico iba para rato, que el libro es corto y que yo no tenía otra cosa qué hacer, me dispuse a leer.

The same day I finished reading eleven minutes —and because of the increasingly frequent power cuts in the country— I started reading El Alquimista, by the same author. It was a book that I had seen a thousand times but that never attracted me enough to read it.
This time it took me four hours to finish it, yes.... I had never read a book all at once, but since the power cut was going on for a while, the book is short and I had nothing else to do, I started reading.
El libro narra la historia de Santiago, un joven que decide abandonar su país, España, y su oficio como pastor de ovejas para emprender un viaje hacia Egipto en busca de un tesoro que le fue develado en sus sueños. Esta es la premisa de la que parte el autor para desarrollar toda la historia.
Antes de extenderme más, hago un pequeño inciso para señalar que si estas en busca de una lectura ligera y con tintes de autoayuda, te lo recomiendo. Digo esto porque muchos miran con displicencia los libros de autoayuda, pero si lo pensamos bien todos los libros son de autoayuda.
The book tells the story of Santiago, a young man who decides to leave his country, Spain, and his job as a shepherd to embark on a journey to Egypt in search of a treasure that was revealed to him in his dreams. This is the premise from which the author starts to develop the whole story.
Before going any further, I will make a small aside to point out that if you are looking for a light read with a lot of self-help tinges, I recommend it. I say this because many people look down on self-help books, but if we think about it all books are self-help.
Continuando con lo anterior, es un libro de ficción que narra el viaje del héroe. Un viaje con el que cualquiera de los lectores se puede sentir identificado.
Como comenté antes, Santiago es un joven andaluz que vive una vida tranquila y feliz. Desde joven soñó con ser viajero y tras el apoyo de su familia pudo lograrlo a través del oficio de pastor. Pasaba horas con sus ovejas así que aprendió a contemplarlas y a comunicarse con ellas. Una noche decide descansar con sus ovejas en una iglesia abandonada y tiene un sueño que se repite la noche siguiente. Por su curiosidad decidió consultarlo con una gitana, quién le habló de un tesoro que se encontraba cerca de las pirámides, ella decide no cobrarle con el compromiso de que en su regreso el joven le diera el 10% de aquel tesoro. Santiago se va del lugar sintiéndose un poco estafado, pese a no haber pagado nada.
Esa misma tarde conoce a Melquisedec, un anciano que le habla de su sueño y de algo llamado Leyenda Personal, lo que vendría siendo el propósito de vida. Sostenía que, si realmente deseamos algo, el universo conspirará para ayudarnos (qué bonita afirmación).
Continuing with the above, it's a fiction book that narrates the hero's journey. A journey that any reader can identify with.
As I mentioned before, Santiago is a young Andalusian who lives a quiet and happy life. Since he was young he dreamed of being a traveler and after the support of his family he was able to achieve it through his job as a shepherd. He spent hours with his sheep so he learned to contemplate and communicate with them. One night he decided to rest with his sheep in an abandoned church and had a dream that repeated itself the following night. Out of curiosity he decided to consult with a gypsy woman, who told him about a treasure that was near the pyramids, she decided not to charge him with the commitment that on his return the young man would give her 10% of that treasure. Santiago leaves the place feeling a little swindled, in spite of not having paid anything.
That same afternoon he meets Melchizedek, an old man who tells him about his dream and about something called Personal Legend, which is the purpose of life. He argued that if we really want something, the universe will conspire to help us (what a nice statement).
El joven decide arriesgarse a lo desconocido, vender sus ovejas e ir en busca de su tesoro. Ahí es cuando comienza la aventura, donde le aguardan muchos obstáculos acompañados de grandes enseñanzas. Aunque muchas veces dudó en continuar, al verse tan alejado de su verdadero objetivo, poco a poco fue retomando su camino, entendiendo que cada experiencia que vivió lo estaba preparando para su destino.
Santiago, por reveses del destino, termina perdiendo su dinero por lo que se ve obligado a trabajar en algo que desconoce, sin embargo poco a poco logró hacer prosperar el negocio, reuniendo dinero que le permitió continuar su viaje y aprendiendo un idioma que le sería útil más adelante.
En resumen, es un llamado a hacer eso que nos gusta, por más pequeño que sea. A llenarnos de valentía para dejar el miedo atrás y superar estos obstáculos, confiando en que el universo nos respaldará.
The young man decides to risk the unknown, sell his sheep and go in search of his treasure. That is when the adventure begins, where many obstacles await him accompanied by great teachings. Although he often hesitated to continue, seeing himself so far away from his true objective, little by little he began to take his path again, understanding that each experience he lived was preparing him for his destiny.
Santiago, by twists of fate, ends up losing his money so he is forced to work in something he does n't know, however, little by little he managed to make the business prosper, collecting money that allowed him to continue his journey and learning a language that would be useful later.
In short, it is a call to do what we like, no matter how small it may be. To fill ourselves with courage to leave fear behind and overcome these obstacles, trusting that the universe will back us up.
Otra enseñanza que destaco del libro es que, parafraseando, muchas veces nos toca pagar un precio alto cuando esperamos que otro nos diga que hagamos lo que ya sabíamos que queríamos hacer, pero no nos atrevíamos a enfrentar. Como en el caso de la adivina y el 10% de ganancias.
Me pareció un libro hermoso, que deja muchas lecciones de vida. Habla de el alma del mundo, como lo conocen en la alquimia —un símil al inconsciente colectivo en psicología— y de la retroalimentación que hay entre éste y el individuo. Básicamente señala que mientras más nos acerquemos a nuestro propósito, más felices nos sentiremos y que esto repercutirá en el alma del mundo, lo mismo sucede si nos alejamos de él, pues el alma del mundo se llenará de esa frustración. De la misma forma, hace gran énfasis en conocer nuestro corazón, es decir: autoconocimiento. Creo que en este punto convergen muchas disciplinas espirituales religiosas, laicas y psicológicas: el punto de partida —el trayecto y también el destino— es conocernos a nosotros mismos.
Another lesson I highlight from the book is that, to paraphrase, we often pay a high price when we wait for someone else to tell us to do what we already knew we wanted to do, but did not dare to face. As in the case of the fortune teller and the 10% profit.
I thought it was indeed a beautiful book, with many life lessons. It talks about the soul of the world, as it is known in alchemy —which although the book does not say it, makes me think that it is the equivalent of the collective unconscious in psychology—, and the feedback between it and the individual. Basically he points out that the closer we get to our purpose, the happier we will feel and that this will have repercussions in the soul of the world, the same happens if we move away from it, because the soul of the world will be filled with that frustration. In the same way, he places great emphasis on knowing our heart, that is: self-knowledge. I believe that many religious, secular and psychological spiritual disciplines converge at this point: the starting point —the journey and also the destination— is to know ourselves.

Hola Erika, lo mismo me pasó a mí. Perdí la cuenta de las veces que lo vi sin interés de leerlo, hasta que lo hice y me gustó. Es literalmente la estructura narrativa de el viaje del héroe, así que sabes qué esperarte. Aún así se disfruta.

Sounds weird, but he just decided to believe. I think we all do when we risk doing different/new things, it's just that for literary purposes they exaggerate it.
