Stories have a way of stimulating the mind, depending on the genre. A horror story would put you in "frighten-town". A Sci-fi story would really make you ponder. and on, and on. I am still reading a number of books, but I still and will always sneak in a short story every now and then. Also, thank you to everyone who share there brilliant book-reviews every now and then here, I really enjoy reading them. Well, I was in search of another author as I thought I was reading a lot of Allan Poe's stories too much, so I came across "Don Berry". He was an American author with quite the reputation, and a number of impressive stories so I delved into this one, "The Sound of Terror".

PLOT

Johnny Youngbear was an aviator for the Airforce. He had a normal life with a wife and a friend Mitch Campbell. The story started the day Mitch was to take flight to space, seemingly for some knowledge-discovery mission or some sort. It so happens that Mitch didn't make it back, even though there was an emergency pod. Mystery surrounded Mitch's death during flight, and his inability to detach his pod or respond properly to controls command. Johnny was bewildered, so much so that he had to see a therapist. Johnny was to take flight a few weeks later. The day came and Johnny was all suited, unknowing to him or the base what discovery he was about to make.

SETTING

The whole even possible happened in the United States, Arizona. The east seem to be where it all happen. Also the Mesa Dry Lake launching site. Also, Space.

CHARACTER

Johnny Youngbear who is the main Character in the story, the protagonist. Johnny's wife who is unnamed. Mitch Campbell who is Johnny's friend and also an aviator who met his end prematurely. Doctor Lambert the psychologist which Johnny saw after Mitch death, who else made a resounding discovery at the climax.

PURPOSE

I really think this is a science message. A discovery in the field of science which also got me thinking. Mans greatest enemy is himself after-all.

Eclectic. I think that really describes the story in a way. One minute I am thinking, action-packed, next minute I am thinking mental. I really enjoyed reading this. A satisfying ending to the story too. During all the event in the story, the protagonist kept singing one peculiar song in his head, and it seem to be a way to rewire his mind to reality. Its inexplicable really. I totally recommend you read it. Rating it a 3/5.
