Yesterday I finally had the chance to read this book by the great writer Harper Lee, undoubtedly a very emotional book, although unfortunately it hasn't had as much publicity or impact as others of its kind. Despite winning a Pulitzer Prize, it's hard to find in bookstores these days, at least in my country. However, it's a book you'll find hard to forget once you get around to reading it.
Ayer tuve finalmente la oportunidad de leer este libro de la gran escritora Harper Lee, un libro sin duda muy emocional, aunque lamentablemente no haya tenido tanta publicidad o trascendencia como otros de su género, porque a pesar de que llegó a ganar un premio Pulitzer, hoy en día es difícil hallarlo en librerías, al menos en mi país. Sin embargo es un libro que difícilmente puedes olvidar una vez que te das a la tarea de leerlo.
The plot takes place in the United States, in a fictional town in Alabama, during the harsh times of the Great Depression. The protagonists are a pair of children raised by a widowed father, a fair and noble lawyer named Atticus Finch, who instills in them great values regarding respecting and caring for nightingales, referring to nature in general and what true innocence represents, something the children will treasure in their hearts. At the same time, we learn the story of Tom Robinson, a Black man who is unjustly accused of raping Mayella Ewell, a white woman in the community. Of course, this alleged crime committed by a Black man at that time represented an even greater grievance. So, without prior investigation, a mob decides to lynch him. But Atticus Finch decides to defend him, not only from the angry mob, but also from the injustice that the system intends to commit against him.
La trama transcurre en Los Estados Unidos, en un pueblo ficticio de Alabama, en una época dura como lo fue la gran depresión. Los protagonistas son un par de niños criados por un padre viudo, un abogado justo y noble llamado Atticus Finch, y él les inculca grandes valores respecto a respetar y cuidar a los ruiseñores, refiriéndose a la naturaleza en general y a lo que representa verdadera inocencia, algo que los niños atesorarán en sus corazones. Al mismo tiempo conocemos la historia de Tom Robinson, un hombre negro que es acusado injustamente de violar a Mayella Ewell, una mujer blanca de la comunidad, y por supuesto este supuesto crimen cometido por un hombre negro en aquella época representaba un mayor agravio todavía, así que sin investigaciones previas, una turba se decide a lincharlo, pero Atticus Finch decide defenderlo, no solo de la turba enardecida, sino de la injusticia que el sistema pretende cometer contra él.
I think this book invites a deeper analysis of the impact and consequences of hatred, racism and prejudice, what happens to Tom finally, although it filled me with helplessness and sadness, made me think that it is nothing more than the reflection of a sad and harsh reality that the world had to face at some point, because, as much as racism is still perceived in some places, it was never as strong as in previous years, where black people had to live stigmatized for the simple fact of existing. Tom represents in some way the nightingale, the bird that warned its children that they should not kill, since it is pure and innocent, but unfortunately sometimes society sees in nobility only a fragile element that they can take advantage of very well.
Pienso que este el libro invita a un análisis más profundo sobre el impacto y las consecuencias del odio, el racismo y los prejuicios, lo que ocurre con Tom finalmente, aunque me llenó de impotencia y tristeza me hizo pensar que no es más que el reflejo de una triste y dura realidad que el mundo tuvo que afrontar alguna vez, porque, por más que el racismo todavía se perciba en algunos lugares, nunca fue tan fuerte como en años anteriores, donde las personas negras tenían que vivir estigmatizados por el simple hecho de existir. Tom representa de alguna manera el ruiseñor, el pájaro que advirtió a sus hijos que no debían matar, ya que es puro e inocente, pero lamentablemente algunas veces la sociedad ve en la nobleza solo un elemento frágil al que pueden aprovechar muy bien.
But at the same time the novel also aims to show the situations that women had to face at that time, we see it from two points of view, on the one hand we have Mayella Ewell who has had to endure the abusive treatment of her conflictive father, even induced to the point of lying, even knowing that it could destroy the life of an innocent (one more charge on her conscience) and on the other we have the protagonist of the story, Scout, who I consider a somewhat Mary Sue character, that is, in a certain way she is inspired by the author, Harper Lee, who was also the daughter of a lawyer. Scout is constantly criticized and pointed out for her way of dressing and being, everyone would like her to behave like a lady, but she is only interested in exploring the world, enjoying her childhood to the fullest and not satisfying conventionalities that for her are absurd.
Pero al mismo tiempo la novela también pretende mostrar las situaciones a las que tenían que enfrentarse las mujeres en esa época, lo vemos desde dos puntos de vista, por un lado tenemos a Mayella Ewell que ha tenido que soportar el trato abusivo de su conflictivo padre, inducida incluso hasta el punto de mentir, aún a sabiendas de que podría destruir la vida de un inocente (un cargo más para su consciencia) y por el otro tenemos a la propia protagonista de la historia, Scout, a quién considero un personaje un tanto Mery Sue, es decir, que de cierta manera está inspirado en la autora, Harper Lee, quién también era hija de un abogado. Scout es constantemente criticada y señalada por su forma de vestir y de ser, todos desearían que se comportase como una señorita, pero a ella solo le interesa explorar el mundo, disfrutar su niñez al máximo y no satisfacer convencionalismos que para ella son absurdos.
Something I noticed is that most of the secondary characters in this novel represent very marked stereotypes for the time, which are nevertheless very necessary to represent the reality of prejudice and injustice.
Algo que noté es que la mayoría de los personajes secundarios de esta novela representan estereotipos muy marcados para la época que sin embargo son muy necesarios para representar la realidad acerca de los prejuicios e injusticias.
For me, it was a necessary read for reflection. It wasn't exactly pleasant, since, as I said, there were scenes of injustice that were difficult to read, but they invite reflection on empathy, so it's a novel I would definitely recommend. Para mi fue una lectura necesaria para reflexionar, no fue precisamente grata, ya que como les dije, hubo escenas de injusticia que fueron difíciles de leer, pero invitan a pensar sobre la empatía, así que es una novela que yo recomendaría definitivamente. Your review of this book nailed the spirit of this book. I liked the way you presented the issues of racism and gender struggles with such a sensitive approach. Your explanation of Tom as the nightingale was very moving and touching. It is a fact that this story makes the readers ponder over the issues of justice, innocence and compassion.
