The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgákov was at the head of my bed for a few nights, a moment that I took advantage of, just before going to sleep, to let myself fall in love with its narrative.
I got so lost in this novel that I even took it to high school and on free or boring shifts, I would take out my book so the hours would go by faster. Yes, I was always a library weirdo.
The truth is that when I finished reading this book, I felt like I had gone through a strange, half-mystical dream from another world.
I think it is a novel that is unlike any other. Its confusing and surreal moments keep the reader spellbound all the time. In addition to a beauty in the very rich general discourse, at times convulsive, that forces us to look beyond what seems real. As I learned years later, by chance, Mikhail Bulgakov wrote this work in a very difficult time, when freedom of thought was prohibited, and it shows on every page. It is a story that combines fantasy with a strong criticism of society.
The novel begins with something as unexpected as the arrival of the devil in Moscow. This character, called Woland, is not the typical evil being who only causes destruction, but rather a mysterious, ironic and even fun being. He arrives accompanied by a group of very strange characters: a giant cat that talks and shoots, an elegant assistant, a witch... and together they begin to do their thing in the city. Through his antics, Bulgakov mocks the fear, hypocrisy and lack of values that existed in his society.
While all this is happening, we meet two very different, but deeply human characters: the Master and Margarita. The Master is a writer who has lost hope because his novel, which talks about Pontius Pilate and Jesus Christ, was rejected and censored. Margarita, for her part, is a woman in love who is willing to do anything to get her lover back.
What impressed me the most, and we can say that it even scared me, was the things the protagonist was willing to do for love. Margarita does not give up, and when she learns that the devil can help her, she agrees to participate in a coven, becoming a witch just to save the Master.
The shocking thing is that, faced with the possibility of being helped in a mystical and supernatural way, she does not ask for or seek wealth or power, only the possibility of being with the person she loves again. His love conquers even the forces of evil, and that made me think that, deep down, Bulgakov wanted to show us that true love and fidelity to one's soul can be more powerful.
Without a doubt, this is a novel that I recommend you read, you will love it from the first chapter. And it will accompany you for several nights, right on your bedside table.

El maestro y Margarita de Mijaíl Bulgákov estuvo en la cabecera de mi cama por unas cuantas noches, momento que aprovechaba, justo antes de dormir, para dejarme enamorar por su narrativa.
Llegué a perderme tanto en esta novela que incluso la llevaba a la secundaria y en los turnos libres o aburridos, sacaba mi libro para que se fueran más rápido las horas. Sí, siempre fui un raro bicho de biblioteca.
Lo cierto es que cuando terminé de leer este libro, sentí que había pasado por un sueño extraño, medio místico, de otro mundo.
Creo que es una novela que no se parece a ninguna otra. Sus momentos confusos y surrealistas mantienen al lector hechizado todo el tiempo. Además de una belleza en el discurso general muy rico, a ratos convulso, que nos obliga a mirar más allá de lo que parece real. Según supe años después, de manera casual, Mijaíl Bulgákov escribió esta obra en una época muy difícil, cuando la libertad de pensamiento estaba prohibida, y eso se nota en cada página. Es una historia que combina la fantasía con una fuerte crítica a la sociedad.
La novela comienza con algo tan inesperado como la llegada del diablo a Moscú. Este personaje, llamado Woland, no es el típico ser malvado que solo causa destrucción, sino un ser misterioso, irónico y hasta divertido. Llega acompañado por un grupo de personajes rarísimos: un gato gigante que habla y dispara, un asistente elegante, una bruja… y juntos comienzan a hacer de las suyas en la ciudad. El Maestro es un escritor que ha perdido la esperanza porque su novela, que habla sobre Poncio Pilato y Jesucristo, fue rechazada y censurada. Margarita, por su parte, es una mujer enamorada que está dispuesta a todo por recuperar a su amado.
Lo que más me impresionó y ´podemos decir que hasta me asustó, fue las cosas que estuvo dispuesta a hacer la protagonista por amor. Margarita no se rinde, y cuando se entera de que el diablo puede ayudarla, acepta participar en un aquelarre, convirtiéndose en bruja solo para salvar al Maestro.
Lo impactante es que, ante esa posibilidad de ser ayudada de una forma mística y sobrenatural, no pide ni busca riqueza o poder, solo la posibilidad de volver a estar con la persona que ama. Su amor vence incluso las fuerzas del mal, y eso me hizo pensar que, en el fondo, Bulgákov quería mostrarnos que el amor verdadero y la fidelidad al alma de uno mismo pueden ser más poderosos.
Sin lugar a dudas es esta una novela que te recomiendo leer, vas a amarla desde el primer capítulo. Y te acompañará por varias noches, justo en la mesita de tu cama.

La genialidad de Bulgákov reside en usar la sátira fantástica no como escape, sino como un reflejo brutal. Woland y su corte no son simples agentes del caos; son cirujanos de almas que, al exponer las mezquindades de la burguesía moscovita, revelan una verdad incómoda: el verdadero mal no es el diablo, sino la corrupción moral que ya anidaba en los corazones humanos. Esa mezcla de comedia, filosofía y crítica social la convierte en una obra maestra atemporal.

I was surprised by your post because this classic is on my TBR list and not many weeks ago I was finally done with it. It's definetely an interesting piece of literature.. the history of how it was made is almost as important as the novel itself.
I have to say that, while it was provocative and imaginative, the book didn't seem to leave me as satisfied as I was expecting. However, they say this is definetely one of those books that requires multiple readings and deep understanding of its context in order to get the most out of it.
That's how it is. It is a very old book. It is the same one that has accompanied me since my adolescence. I've had to repair it many times, but it pains me to throw it away and replace it with a new version.
