If only people cared about a being other than themselves...

Cause it's not like they don't know about the animal cruelty that goes on- everywhere AND the direct destruction to the Mother Earth's delicate ecosystem, it's just that they are selfish hypocrites.

Attitudes are mixed up in lots of cultures. People are so protective of their pets, but happily eat other animals that are as smart. Kids read books and watch cartoons of talking animals and then eat those same animals for dinner. I stopped eating meat about 30 years ago. I am pragmatic rather than dogmatic and choose what to eat based on my own feelings. I do eat a small amount of fish and we keep chickens that have a pretty good life whilst giving us eggs.

I'm not going to preach to people about what they should eat, but cutting meat consumption would be good for many reasons (health, environment, animal welfare etc). Meat is relatively cheap, especially compared to some of the veggie substitutes.

I've not had too many people teasing me over not eating meat, but some do like to go on about the joys of bacon etc. One refers to PETA as People Eating Tasty Animals. I think we have to start with getting people to think more about what they eat. They should be conscious of how the meat industry functions and how the animals are treated.
