Wishing all my dear friends a very good day. How are you all doing? For us, the flood situation still hasn’t fully eased. This condition has affected the entire country. It has become a major difficulty, and there are no opportunities to go out freely for work or even to buy things from shops. During times like this, we need to keep our minds strong.
Today, I’m sharing something simple and comforting—alu kesal (ash plantain). It is one of the humble, traditional village ingredients that brings both comfort and nourishment. Its firm texture and mild flavor absorb spices beautifully, creating a hearty, healthy, and satisfying curry suitable for any meal. Before preparing this delicious ash plantain curry, it’s worth appreciating how easily this simple ingredient can be transformed into a wholesome dish that the whole family can enjoy.
Let’s take a look at how to prepare it.

Materials Used.
Gray plantains 200g.
1 1/2 Cup of coconut oil.
A finely chopped onion.
A little chopped garlic.
A piece of cinnamon.
Curry leaves.
2 chopped green chili peppers.
2 chopped dried chili peppers.
Salt to taste.
3 Tablespoon of coconut oil.
1 Teaspoon of Mustard seed.
1/2 Teaspoon of turmeric powder.
2 Teaspoon of Curry powder.

The cooking process as follows.
Now let’s get ready to prepare this dish. First, wash and clean the ash plantains thoroughly, then slice them into round pieces as shown below.
Next, add the sliced plantains into a cooking pot and mix in the chopped onions, garlic, cinnamon, curry leaves, chili powder, turmeric powder, salt, and coconut milk. Place it on the stove and cook for about 6 minutes.
Next, meanwhile, take a pan and add about two tablespoons of coconut oil. Place it on the stove, and once the oil heats up, add the mustard seeds, chopped green chilies, onions, pandan leaves, and a few dried red chili pieces. Sauté them for a while and remove from the stove.
Now, add the sautéed mixture to the cooked mixed plantain dish, mix well, and after about a minute, remove it from the stove.

A gray plantain curry is more than just a meal—it’s a reminder of the simple, nourishing foods that have supported generations. With just a handful of spices and coconut flavor, it becomes a dish rich in taste and tradition. Preparing it at home is both easy and rewarding, giving you a wholesome curry that pairs wonderfully with rice or roti. Enjoy the warmth, comfort, and natural goodness it brings to your dining table.
