Good morning to all my Hive friends! 🌞
In Sri Lanka, red cowpea—also known locally as “Alet” or “Kadala”—belongs to the legume family and is one of the most nutritious crops, packed with protein, fiber, and essential minerals. Preparing a red cowpea curry is a wonderful way to bring both health and flavor to your dining table.

Often enjoyed with rice or roti, this traditional curry becomes rich, creamy, and aromatic when cooked with coconut milk, combined with fragrant spices such as cumin seeds, curry leaves, and shallots. It’s a dish that beautifully blends nourishment and taste—perfect for both lunch and dinner.

Ingredients...
1 Cup of boiled red cowpea.
1 Cup of coconut milk.
2 green chili pods.
1 Onion.
A piece of cinnamon.
curry leaves.
About 2 cloves of garlic.
1/2 Teaspoon of chili powder.
1/2 teaspoon of curry powder.
1/2 Teaspoon of mustard powder.
Salt as needed.
1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder.
1/2 Teaspoon of Fenugreek seed.
1 Tablespoon of coconut oil.

The order of preparation.
Step 1:-
First, to prepare this curry, finely chop the onions, garlic, and green chilies.

Step 2:-
Next, I placed a pan on the stove and added one tablespoon of coconut oil, allowing it to heat up. Once the oil was hot, I added fenugreek seeds, garlic, onions, curry leaves, and a piece of cinnamon, letting them sauté until fragrant.

Step 3:-
Next, I added a little coconut milk to the mixture. Then I included turmeric powder, chili powder, curry powder, pepper powder, and salt along with a few chopped green chilies, mixing everything well to blend the flavors together.

Step 4:-
Finally, I slightly crushed the red cowpeas and added them to the mixture. I cooked it for about 4 minutes, allowing all the flavors to blend nicely, and then removed it from the stove.

This red cowpea curry not only enhances your meal with its rich taste but also offers a powerful nutritional boost. It’s simple to prepare and incredibly satisfying, reminding us how traditional Sri Lankan recipes blend health with homely.
The red cowpea looks like what we call kidney beans. Lovely recipe 😋
