There is a sort of an unwritten rule in Nigeria that most people follow to the core whether knowingly or unknowingly and it has become a tradition in Nigerian homes. I'm talking about Sunday Rice. Sunday rice is a weekly meal in most Nigerian homes and if you haven't eaten rice on that day you'd feel it in your system that something is missing.

The Sunday rice could be jollof, fried rice, coconut rice and the most popular one is white rice and stew or sauce. Rice is a kind of food that is widely accepted in every part of the country and it has become like an household meal. Like I stated earlier, irrespective of religion or class, it has become a tradition for most households in Nigeria to prepare and eat rice on Sundays.
I grew up in a Nigerian home where the Sunday rice is a tradition and even till date that I stay on my own I still practice the tradition. I can also confirm that I have seen so many people do the same thing - friends, relatives that I have visited at one point or another have also practiced this Sunday rice tradition and shows to me that it is not only my immediate family traditions only. However, there may be exceptions to this in some family but it remains a fact that majority of Nigerian homes cook rice on Sundays.

Why Nigerians practice Sunday rice tradition
The answer to this is quite obvious and it is because when rice was first introduced to Nigerians it was seen as a special meal and was quite expensive to prepare, so the need to eat it at least once in a week and Sunday which is a day when everyone will be at home.
Of all the days of the week Sunday has a special feeling and that was why I believe it was chosen to be the day when the special rice delicacy is being prepared by family and friends.
The Sunday rice tradition have been existing for a long time and it has become a permanent lifestyle of Nigerians.

You are right most of Nigeria home they eat rice on Sunday but not everyone because there are still some home that, I know that they do eat pounded yam every Sunday there are house.
No a single Sunday that they will not eat pounded yam especially in local area, like my town if they have visitor, they will prepare pounded yam with (efo) vegetables soup or (egunsi) melon soup with meat, fish, ponmo.
But most of people in nigeria love rice especially children, they love jollof rice and fried rice, all they will do is to be thanking you mummy thanks you, the food is delicious or yummy.

STOPI can relate sis, This has been a myth we all grew up with in Nigeria and i am yet to know who proposed this myth.
The fact that is is generally accepted by all the tribes in Nigeria, not even only on Sundays but also on Christmas day.
I guess there was a time when Rice was a special meal back then in the days dat promted it to be eaten on Sunday and special days or maybe because it is generally accepted in all tribes.
Funny enough till day i still see my following this trend and i don't think am leaving it soon.🤣🤣🤣🤣. Who ever invented it thank you ooo
