Popularly known as MACZUL, which stands for Museum of Contemporary Art of Zulia, it was inaugurated on October 24, 1998 with the exhibition " The Infinite Song of this Sun ", an anthological exhibition that covered 217 years of art and culture history of the Zulia region.

However, it was born on September 17, 1989 when it was created in a public act coordinated by the sociologist Mirna Quintero de Velasco The Foundation that bears the name of the museum and that worked during all those previous years to give shape and get the physical space it now has, granted on loan by the University of Zulia in 1990, starting to build in 1992 with an initial contribution from the National Congress.

In 1994 the first module was completed and the foundation's offices, which had previously been in other locations, were moved there.

Its first official activity took place on October 12, 1997, before its inauguration, and it was the V Catatumbo Insurance Photo Salon.

The MACZUL is located in an area of 3 and a half hectares, of which its structure covers 13 thousand square meters, has 10 exhibition halls interconnected among them. Its structure is avant-garde, made in clean construction in reinforced concrete, with metal structures supported by high tubulars, which with an elongated pentagonal shape covers the access ramps to the building and in a triangular tower contains the identification of the institution, It also has a covered plaza, central courtyard and green areas.

It is divided into three areas: public, technical and administrative.

National and international collections are exhibited in permanent, temporary, experimental and special events exhibitions of the most diverse expressive genres (such as painting, sculpture, drawing, engraving, photography, installations, assemblages, ceramics and collage) produced by leading artists.

It also has the task of research, collection, organization, preservation, valuation, interpretation, dissemination and understanding of the heritage and artistic processes of Zulia, Venezuela and the Caribbean and provides its services as permanent activities of the museum, in workshops, courses, guided tours, film screenings, community outreach work and concerts, among others.

It is a place that contributes to the cultural transformation of the regional community, providing a first class educational service and has become the main museum in the region.

It is a must visit place for locals and visitors and is located in the Cecilio Acosta extension, 67th Street with University Avenue, very close to the building where the Grano de Oro Airport was located, in the so-called rental area of the University of Zulia (LUZ).
It should be noted that this work began as a project to build an art gallery for the University.
