Lagos carnival is also known as the fanti or Caretta carnival of Lagos.It's a carnival that's celebrated in Lagos State situated in the western region of Nigeria.

The origins of the carnival dates back to the Lagos colonial period when the Brazilian former slave returnees came back to reside in Lagos in the 19th century.The event is usually centered on Lagos Island, filled with troop displays of costumes and various forms of entertainment including music and dancing. The carnival portrays an eclectic mixture of Nigerian, Brazilian and Cuban heritage of the city.The Lagos Carnival is filled with amazing and memorable activities.

​It is a very colorful, memorable, and highly attractive yearly event, as the city is known to be the most populated in Western Nigeria. The event is always witnesses a large turnout of spectators from Nigeria and Diaspora.

It is usually scheduled around the month of May. During this cultural carnival, there is an exposition of the culture and tradition of Lagosians through dance, costumes with its remarkable body paints, and colorful fashion, the participant’s parades through the streets amidst cheers and songs.

Traditional rulers of communities in Lagos and the traditional title holders dress in their traditional regalia to add color to this memorable event.

Lagos cultural carnival is not restricted to Lagosians; it is open to others from various parts of the country and beyond who enjoys participating in a lively event of such magnitude. Historians and journalists utilize the opportunity to make documentaries of the cultural heritage of the people.
