What personality traits would you most like to cultivate?

What are the good qualities that you wish to cultivate in your personality? Mine are humor, generosity and compassion. I already have intelligence and strength, but those three qualities are my desired goal. In this way I wish to broaden my skills simply by being a better person with a fuller repertoire of social skills. They are there in seed form, like small shoots already, but I would personally like them to grow, and so that is my current meditation.

How about you? What personality traits do you think are there in latent form in your personality already, that simply need some nurturing to grow into fine gifts. A little introspection and self-reflection can go a long way. We already have tools or skills latent in our natures, based on our upbringing and birth genes. All we need to do is identify them and then consciously cultivate them.

We are a wealth of potential as human beings but sometimes we lose sight of our gifts that we already possess. Naturally during the first half of life it may be a struggle to always know ourselves, or perceive our talents but inherently we can still know them for what they are if we meditate on it a bit. For example, what are the qualities you admire in a person? What qualities would you like to emulate? Those are the skills that you potentially have already, just untapped.

Any skill in life can be learned. Similarly any personality traits can be cultivated, if you have the desire to incorporate them into your character. Even great leaders have to be self-aware and work on refining the qualities that are required to be a great leader. Social skills are real gifts and help us to go far in life because life is all about people. People are the greatest resource or asset in any business. If you have the right team, then you can achieve anything that you desire.

I wish to improve my latent humor because it is a fantastic skill with which to uplift the mood of anyone who is struggling with depression or loss of inspiration in their own lives. It is also a great tool for disarming anger – my own and others. Anger is one of the great enemies of the mind and of social success and I see it in my self sometimes. But with humor, I can totally switch a situation around for the better.

Generosity is a masterful trait because it helps me to counteract my feelings of greed. Greed is another of the primary pitfalls in a healthy personality. It shows poverty consciousness and a mind that is thinking small. It indicates selfishness. Generosity of spirit as well as of material resources is a fantastic quality to have in ones character. We can inspire others with our ability to share. People are won over by receiving gifts from others. It shows that you are confident in your source of wealth. Even giving of our time to simply pay attention to a person with whom we converse, is a form of generosity.

Compassion is, of course, the greatest quality to cultivate in any personality. It is the Buddha who is the traditional role model of compassion, or the Christ in the western cultures. It indicates that you have understood the basic big picture of life, that we are all in the same boat, and that we are all connected. Compassion for all life should be cultivated by any sincere person who wishes to make a success of their lives.

When someone is in a negative state of mind, we can empathize with them out of compassion and not take anything they say or do to us personally. We all fall victim to our frustrations sometimes. All of us are suffering with the struggles born from life on earth, whether through external circumstances, or from other people or even just from our own minds. With a mood of compassion we can be kind to those in a state of struggle. We can also be kind to ourselves when we notice our own mind falling under a lower vibration.

With these personality traits in my character, I will feel like a better person. What are the qualities that you would like to cultivate in yourself? Patience is another good one. Perseverance or determination is crucial too. Of course none of us are perfect at all the social graces, or on top of our game all the time, but with long term continued effort we can identify the dormant qualities we might already have in seed form and then slowly and with conscious effort we can mold those traits which inspire us in others and which we would like to have as gifts in ourselves.

Good character, or good social skills and personality traits are like gems or treasures for a person because they enable us to smooth over the rough patches in life. They also enable better social interaction and that is the doorway to greater things, regardless of your department of life. By being gifted with social skills you can open doors to great success and fortune on your path. Consider this an exercise in introspection and a way to refine and improve the greatest gift you already have, namely yourself.
